How does the British honours system work?
Any member of the public or an official body can nominate someone for an honour.
UK nationals and citizens of 15 Commonwealth 'realms', of which the King is head of state, are eligible for nomination.
People living or working overseas, whose achievements were made in another country or in the UK and have a significant international element, can be nominated too.
Nominations are submitted to the Cabinet Office's Honours and Appointments Secretariat, which oversees the honours system.
A group of 10 independent honours committees, each covering a specialist subject area such as sport or health, consider nominations.
King Charles ultimately decides who is recognised in the Birthday Honours list (Image: Temilade Adelaja/PA Wire) The recommendations of these groups of independent experts and senior civil servants are passed on to the Prime Minister and, ultimately, the King for approval.
There are two sets of honours per year, at New Year and in June on the King's official birthday.
Once all recipients have been decided and checked, the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood at St James's Palace arranges investitures for the presentation of medals.
These ceremonies, held about 30 times a year at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and, occasionally, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, and are hosted by senior royals.
The most senior ranks of the Order of the British Empire are Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GBE) and Knight or Dame Commander (KBE or DBE).

The order's ranks, after Knighthood or Damehood, are Commander (CBE), Officer (OBE) and Member (MBE).
Other honours include Companion of Honour (CH), British Empire Medal (BEM), Royal Victorian Order (RVO), Order of the Bath and Order of St Michael and St George.
There is also Royal Red Cross (RRC), King's Police Medal (KPM), King's Fire Service Medal (KFSM) and King's Ambulance Service Medal (KAM).

Love Island UK fans 'never been happier' as 2025 winners are crowned

The summer of love has come to an end as Love Island UK season 12 declared its winning couple – Toni and Cach. The finale of the ITV reality dating series took place tonight as the nation voted on their favourite couple out of Harry Cooksley and Shakira Khan, Jamie Rhodes and Yasmin Pettet, Cach Mercer and Toni Laites, and Angel Swift and Ty Isherwood. All four duos, barely exclusive by the final episode, have faced their ups and downs on the Maya Jama-hosted show in their quest to find true love. During the finale the pairs enjoyed a finale dinner in which they all made sweet speeches to one another about the happiness they have found with each other which left some viewers teary-eyed and others 'cringing' at the cheesy display. Coming in fourth place are Angel and Ty who 'can't wait for life on the outside', in third we have Yasmin and Jamie who 'felt the spark' from the first moment they kissed and in second place Harry and Shakira. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Ultimately, however, Toni and Cach won over the hearts of the nation and join winners past including last year's Mimii Ngulube and Josh Oyinsan, Ekin-Su and Davide, and Amber Gill and Greg O'Shea. Fans have plenty of thoughts about the final victors – which also makes Toni the first American winner in a UK season ever. 'I have NEVER been happier for love island winners,' Ab wrote on X. 'And there we have it guys, our 2025 Love island winners TONI AND CACH So well deserved! This was the perfect ending to this season, the trio as our top 3 was all I could ever ask for. This is the first time I'm truly impressed with the British public,' Tima added. ' Elsewhere in the episode we caught up with the Islanders who bid adieu throughout the series and got confirmation that Harrison and Lauren were now exclusive. The chat with Maya spilt plenty of tea with two of the boys – Ben and Tommy – realising they kissed the same woman… at the same event. Love Island has faced scrutiny this season from fans and organisations such as Women's Aid for platforming men exhibiting toxic behaviour, such as contestant Harris Solomon's treatment of Toni and ex-Islander Lauren Wood. In fact, the 2025 season is the second most complained-about series ever to Ofcom, with a staggering 9,000 complaints, largely to do with bullying allegations involving Shakira. More Trending Elsewhere, viewers were left less than impressed by Megan and Dejon getting hot and steamy under the covers. It's not been all smooth sailing for the recently-axed pair, however, with an 'uncomfortable to watch' row between the two prompting fans to call for Dejon's removal. Football club Farnham Town, for whom Harry plays as a midfielder, also came under fire after posting a video of his fellow team players and managers sharing negative commentary on the two women he was involved with on the show – Shakira and Helena Ford. Love Island winners revealed as Cach and Toni in close final

Cach and Toni have been revealed as the winners of Love Island 2025 after several weeks in the Spanish villa, and they have taken home the £50,000 prize over their fellow finalists Cach Mercer and Toni Laites have been revealed as the winners of Love Island 2025. The ITV2 reality show wrapped up its twelfth series on Monday night and viewers watched as the happy couple both looked shocked when it was declared that they had emerged victorious, and would be walking off with the £50,000 prize. ‌ The pair managed to win over the public, beating off competition from fellow finalists Angel Swift and Ty Isherwood, Harry Cooksley and Shakira Khan and Yasmin Pettett and Jamie Rhodes. Immediately after the big win was announced, the couple were greeted by their fellow Islanders as they rushed to congratulate them. ‌ Host Maya Jama announced their victory live on air. It comes after one Mirror writer claimed 'the new Bonnie Blue documentary may be the worst thing I've ever seen on Channel 4'. ‌ The pair looked shocked upon learning of their big win, and when Maya asked US native Toni if she had any words for the British public, she held back tears and screamed: "Yeah, I love you guys!" Viewers were quick to flood social media with their reactions, with one writing: "There you have winners Congratulations to Cach and Toni our American princess took the crown and our handsome and most gentleman we have this year." Another said: "They went from strangers to soulmates," and embellished their comment with a tears emoji and a red heart, whilst a third said: "Toni and Cach are such a deserving couple. Cach taught Toni the bare minimum she should expect in treatment from a man and Toni taught Cach that pride can sometimes stop you getting what you want. I'm here for it." Cach and Toni first laid eyes on each other during Casa Amor and although they struck up an instant connection, it was obvious Toni's heart was still with Harrison. Harrison however, had shared kisses with Helena in the main villa, leaving Toni with no option to explore, adamant Harrison would be doing the same. Of course, he did as he returned to the main villa with Lauren. The pair were glued to each other's hips, but Harrison continued to have flirty conversations with Toni. Harrison then persuaded Toni to couple up with him at the next recoupling, leaving Cach in tears in scenes that moved the nation. However, when Lauren was dumped from the villa, Harrison told his fellow Islanders that he saw himself being in a relationship with Lauren on the outside. ‌ As Harrison made his exit, Cach found it in his heart to forgive Toni, despite trying to get to know Billykiss at the same time. However, it looked like his family made need a little bit more convincing. Cut to the final week, and the couple couldn't have been happier despite all the tests and challenges thrown at them with Cach even telling (not asking) Toni to become exclusive with him. Although the pair reside across the Atlantic from each other, Toni has made it clear that she has no problems moving to London. During the final, the four finalists got all dressed up for one final meal together, and eventual runners-up Harry and Shakira reflected on their journey as a couple together throughout the series. She told him: "Doing this experience without you and watching things unfold was so hard because I felt so strongly towards you. You're everything I could possibly want in a partner. It's been an amazing last week and I'm excited for the future." Prior to coupling up with Shakira, Harry had a l ong-standing romance with Helena Ford and then his ex-girlfriend Emma Munro made a shock entrance to the villa before leaving in the weeks leading up to the final. Shakira was initially coupled up with Harry in the early weeks of the competition, but they got together again just days ahead of the final and he told her: "I came in here and thought it would be a lot of fun. Finding you in a Villa in Mallorca was not on my bingo card this summer. I do regret taking too long to tell you how I felt. We both know this is more than surface level - I think it always has been for me."
