Singapore Airlines quarterly profit falls 59 pc on AI losses, other factors

News187 days ago
New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Singapore Airlines Group's profit declined nearly 59 per cent to 186 million Singapore dollars in the June quarter as losses of Air India and other associated companies, along with lower interest income, trimmed its bottom line.
Singapore Airlines, which holds a 25.1 per cent stake in loss-making Air India, saw its total revenue rise 1.5 per cent to SGD 4.79 billion, whereas net profit dropped 58.8 per cent to SGD 186 million in the June quarter compared to the year-ago period.
In addition to the lower operating profit, the reduction in net profit was largely attributable to a lower interest income on the back of lower cash balances and interest rate cuts, the airline said in a statement on Monday.
The group also recorded 'a share of losses of associated companies compared to a share of profits for the same quarter last year (-SGD 122 million), notably from Air India's financial results, which were not part of the Group's results for the same quarter last year", it said.
Singapore Airlines Group started equity accounting for Air India's financial performance from December 2024, following the full integration of Vistara into Air India.
According to the statement, the demand for air travel remains healthy in the second quarter of FY2025-26 across most route regions due to the traditional summer peak.
'However, the global airline industry continues to face a volatile operating environment, with challenges ranging from geopolitical developments and macroeconomic fluctuations to changing market dynamics and supply chain constraints. The Group will be agile and proactive in responding to changes in demand patterns," the statement said.
Air India has been facing various headwinds in recent times. On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787-8 plane enroute to London Gatwick crashed into a building soon after take off from Ahmedabad, killing 260 people. PTI RAM IAS RAM SHW

Telugu Film Workers Demand 30% Pay Hike, Strike Threatens To Stall Big-Budget Productions

Last Updated: The Telugu Film Employees Federation announced an indefinite strike from Monday, demanding a 30% wage hike, affecting over 10,000 workers and risking big-budget film production. The Telugu film industry is bracing for a major halt in production activities as the Telugu Film Employees Federation announced an indefinite strike starting Monday. The move comes after prolonged negotiations with producers failed to yield an agreement on wage revisions, placing big-budget films and web series currently in production at risk of a complete standstill. At the heart of the standoff is the federation's demand for a 30 per cent hike in daily wages. Representing 24 categories of film workers, the federation has pointed to stagnant pay scales over the past three years as a major concern, stating it has severely impacted the livelihoods of more than 10,000 daily wage workers. A former general secretary of the federation noted that daily wages have remained unchanged despite the rising cost of living in Hyderabad. Additionally, workers have demanded more timely disbursal of wages, calling for a shift from delayed payments to daily settlements. 'Our workers will not report to duty from tomorrow," a federation representative confirmed, asserting that the decision followed exhaustive efforts to resolve the issue through dialogue. The strike decision was formalised during a meeting of the federation's executive committee held on Sunday. The federation has taken a firm stance, announcing that film shoots will only resume if producers provide written assurances agreeing to the revised pay structure. Talks between the Telugu Film Producers Council, the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce, and the federation have reportedly been ongoing for several months. Producers had earlier proposed a 5 per cent wage increase, which the federation rejected as inadequate. Producer C Kalyan, while opposing the strike, acknowledged its potential impact. He described the strike as a 'pressure tactic" but added, 'A month-long production halt could hurt the very daily wage workers they're trying to support." He urged both sides to return to negotiations and find a middle ground. The outcome of the strike remains uncertain. That being said, the Telugu film industry could be heading into a period of prolonged disruption unless a resolution is reached soon. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Hyderabad Metro: MGBS–Chandrayangutta Corridor Gains Pace With Road Widening And Fewer Demolitions

Last Updated: MGBS to Chandrayangutta metro corridor gains speed with road widening, realignment efforts, and minimal property impact. The proposed metro rail corridor between MGBS and Chandrayangutta in the Old City here has gained momentum, with pillar marking underway and road-widening activities progressing steadily, Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited managing director N V S Reddy said on Sunday. He added that the metro alignment has been carefully planned to optimise the route while minimising the number of affected properties. 'Daily review meetings are being held with engineering and revenue officials to closely monitor progress," Reddy said in a release. He noted that the initial estimate of 1,100 affected properties was reduced to around 900 through engineering redesign and realignment efforts. So far, awards have been issued for 412 properties, and demolition has been completed for 380 of them. Compensation amounting to Rs 360 crore has already been disbursed to affected property owners. A detailed action plan has been prepared to expedite the acquisition of the remaining properties and complete demolitions swiftly, he added. A geotechnical agency has been engaged to carry out soil bearing capacity tests for the stations and viaduct pillars. A Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) survey has also been completed to finalise pillar and station locations while avoiding disturbance to historical or sensitive structures. Temporary Benchmark (TBM) points have been established to aid survey and construction during the execution phase. Reddy further stated that arrangements are being made to shift underground sewerage, water pipelines, stormwater drains, and overhead power lines in areas where pillars and stations will come up. In line with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's directives, all overhead electricity lines along the corridor will be converted to underground cabling, he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
