Grieving family name boy, four, killed when cross from a gravestone fell and struck him
The youngster, named in tributes as Eli David, was apparently struck when the cross became detached from the base of the gravestone at Rawtenstall Cemetery, in Lancashire, on Saturday afternoon.
Police and paramedics were called but were unable to save him.
Today family members sobbed and hugged each other as they visited the scene of the tragedy.
A woman - believed to be the boy's mother – also stood silently at the graveside. Others left floral tributes and a teddy bear.
One of the tributes read: 'Our Darling Eli, Our Little Chaos Boy.
'I hope you're playing with the angels and that super grandad is giving you all the cuddles and kisses that we no longer can. We will love you and remember you always until we see you again.'
Another, attached to a bouquet of brightly-coloured sunflowers and chrysanthemums, said: 'Vibrant flowers for our vibrant boy.'
Lancashire Police said the boy's death was not being treated as suspicious and a file will be sent to the coroners' office.
Rossendale Council also confirmed that it was working with the relevant authorities to determine the circumstances of the tragedy, which occurred around 1pm.
Local authorities have responsibility for maintaining graveyards and ensuring they are safe for visitors.
Andy MacNae, MP for Rossendale and Darwen, said: 'My thoughts go out to the family and everyone affected by the tragic incident in Rawtenstall cemetery, which has claimed the life of a four-year-old boy.'
While councillor Liz McInnes, lead member for communities, housing, health and well-being at Rossendale Council, said the 'whole of Rawtenstall is grieving' the boy's death.
'This is a terrible tragedy,' she said. 'My heartfelt and deepest sympathies to the family of this poor boy. The whole of Rawtenstall is grieving.'
A council spokesman said: 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of a young child at Rawtenstall Cemetery on Saturday. Our thoughts are with the family at this devastating time.

Tragedy as Scots ice hockey star, 19, falls to his death from balcony at Ibiza Rocks Hotel
A TEEN ice hockey star has died after plunging from a balcony in Ibiza - just days after another Scots tourist fell to his death at the same hotel. Gary Kelly, 19, fell from the third floor at the four-star Ibiza Rocks Hotel in the early hours of this morning. 5 5 Two ambulances were sent to the scene but paramedics said there was nothing they could do to save him. The tragedy, which is being investigated by police, happened just after midnight. Ibiza Rocks is the same hotel where a Scots holidaymaker fell to his death on July 7. Evan Thomson, 26, from Aberdeen, was on holiday with pals celebrating his birthday. In the days after Evan's death his loved ones raised questions about safety and blasted the hotel where he died over the way the situation was handled. Ice hockey star Gary played for both Dundee Stars and Aberdeen Lynx last season. Tributes have been paid to the teen on social media since the news of his death. He has been described as a "hugely talented and charismatic individual" by Dundee Stars. A statement from the team said: "The Dundee Stars are truly devastated to learn that Gary Kelly has tragically passed away. "We send our thoughts and condolences to Gary's family, partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time. Driving ban for woman who crashed husband's Ferrari
A woman from Melrose has been banned from driving for a year after pleading guilty to crashing her husband's £160,000 Ferrari while over the drink drive limit. Claire Taddei, 47, admitted to being more than twice the legal limit when she crashed into a parked car in Market Square, Melrose, just after midnight on 23 February. Selkirk Sheriff Court heard that Taddei, a chief financial officer, took the "silly" decision to drive her husband's car in a bid to help a friend who was so intoxicated she could not walk home. Not guilty pleas to charges of failing to stop and give her details, and a failure to report the incident to police were accepted by the Crown. Taddei was also fined £900. The court was told Taddei was found to have 138mg of alcohol in 100ml of urine. The legal limit it 67mg/100ml. She had been out celebrating a work promotion with a friend on the night the incident happened, the court heard. After failing to secure help despite calls to family and friends, Taddei decided to leave her friend in the recovery position and took what she said was a "silly" decision to return to her house and get her husband's car. She said that she was not used to driving the Ferrari 458, lost control of it as she drove into the town square, and crashed into parked Sheriff noted her unblemished record and early guilty plea and imposed a 12 month disqualification to be reduced on completion of a drink driver rehabilitation course.
