Grand National results LIVE: Tips and updates as Jonbon set to headline day two at Aintree

Independent04-04-2025
The Grand National Festival at Aintree continues today after a blockbuster clash between Constitution Hill and Lossiemouth provided thrills and excitement on the opening day.
The Willie Mullins-trained Lossiemouth took victory in the Aintree Hurdle after Constitution Hill fell once more following a stumble at the Cheltenham Festival.
On Friday, Jonbon will face Protektorat in the Melling Chase and there's interest in Romeo Coolio who hopes to shrug off defeat in the Michael O'Sullivan Novices Nurdle last month.
The Grand National main event itself takes place on Saturday 5 April and the field was confirmed on Thursday with I Am Maximus leading the charge once more.
The 2024 winner aims to emulate Tiger Roll and Red Rum in winning consecutive Grand Nationals but extra weight may hinder his chances in a strong field that includes Stumptown and Intense Raffles.
Good morning!
Welcome to The Independent's coverage of day two at the Grand National Festival from Aintree racecourse.
Yesterday was a thrilling affair with fans of Willie Mullins celebrating in style as the Irish trainer won the first four grade ones of the day.
The peak was a victory for the Paul Townend ridden Lossiemouth who defeated Constitution Hill in the Aintree Hurdle after the latter fell down the final stretch.
Today's action is headline by the Melling Chase in which Jonbon will attempt to put aside a poor outing at Cheltenham to triumph against Protektorat, El Fabiolo and Matata.
We'll have all the coverage from Friday's races at Aintree as well as build-up to the big race; the Grand National itself running tomorrow at 4pm.

Track where Michael O'Sullivan suffered fall which cost him his life announces closure

Thurles, Ireland's only privately owned racecourse, will stage no more racing after the Molony family declared they were stepping away from the sport The track where tragic jockey Michael O'Sullivan suffered the fall which cost him his life is to close with immediate effect. Thurles racecourse, Ireland's only privately owned track, has staged jump racing in Co Tipperary since 1732 and since the early 1900s has been owned by the Molony family. ‌ It's best known race is the Kinloch Brae Chase in January, won by the likes of Native Upmanship, Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Newmill, Cheltenham Gold Cup heroes Don Cossack and Sizing John and the top-class Allaho. It is one of three Grade 2 races run during its 11 meeting season. ‌ It was in the news in February this year when Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey Michael O'Sullivan suffered serious injuries in a five horse pile-up at the final fence of a chase at Thurles on February 6 in which his mount Wee Charlie was fatally injured. ‌ The 24-year-old was airlifted to hospital in Cork and died ten days later. An IHRB investigation into the incident found 'no evidence of human error, equipment failure, or environmental factors as the primary cause'. 'The incident was attributed to the inherent risks of National Hunt racing, with a series of independent falls triggering an unavoidable chain reaction,' the report said. The track's next scheduled fixture is in October but it will not take place following the Molony family's shock announcement on Friday that it will close immediately, a decision blamed on increasing industry demands and rising costs. A statement from Riona Molony said: 'It has been an honour and a privilege for our family to have run Thurles Racecourse, and I am officially announcing our retirement today. 'We are very proud of the immense contribution our family has made to racing and we are most grateful to our extended racecourse family, our dedicated staff, generous sponsors, loyal patrons and the wider racing community for all your support. ‌ 'Horse-racing is part of the fabric of our family, and we have been very fortunate to have made so many great friends within the industry over the years. My family and I look forward to going racing with you again, as spectators. 'Since my beloved husband Pierce passed away in 2015, with the help of our four daughters Patricia, Helen, Ann Marie and Kate and our wonderful staff, we've managed to keep the show on the road and I know he would be very proud of us for that. 'The girls all have their own families, careers and lives to live. Ever increasing industry demands and the cost of doing business has also been a major factor. 'We're going to enjoy this time together and relax now the decision is made and the news is out before we consider our options.' Hollie Doyle shines as Witness Stand lifts Lennox Stakes

There was early drama as Ralph Beckett's race regular and leading fancy Kinross was withdrawn at the start after receiving a kick, while Ed Walker's Royal Ascot winner Noble Champion was eased down and pulled up early into the piece. However, Doyle avoided any complications as she latched Witness Stand on to the small cluster to go forward from start, always in the slipstream of customary front-runner Quinault and defending champion Audience. It looked momentarily like Audience would recreate last year's heroics, but the 25-1 winner found plenty in reserve inside the final furlong to gallop home two-and-three-quarter-lengths clear of William Haggas' Lake Forest, the only runner to emerge from the chasing pack late on. Insole said: 'As a trainer you wait your whole life for a good horse and to win the Lennox is pretty incredible. 'We bought him for a hundred grand and felt he'd gone under the radar as there were higher offers for him that came our way afterwards. I already had this race in mind for him. 'It was his Chester run (second in a Listed race) that gave us the confidence to come here, and when I saw the rain this morning and the slower ground I knew it would be to his advantage. 'He's in the Hungerford (at Newbury), but would have to carry a penalty now. I also put him in the Foret this morning.' For co-trainer Newland it was a red-letter day in his new venture alongside Insole training on the level alongside his Grand National heroics in the jumps sphere. He is also a part-owner of the winner. Newland said: 'It's a great result and fair play to Jamie and all the team. It was a lovely ride from Hollie in a funny sort of race, but I'm not complaining. 'Jamie leads the Flat team day-to-day, but I am involved in the background and discussing the training and placing of horses. 'I'm also a part-owner of that horse so it's a terrific result. He was bought to be a flag bearer due to his high rating and it was a superb bit of purchasing by Jamie and Matt Holdsworth at the sales and now we've had a payday to get some money back and give us a high-profile winner which is fabulous.' He added: 'It's more than dipping our toe in and we're more of a Flat yard now. There's a number of reasons for that but I'm loving the new challenge of it and it's quite a big thing to try and re-establish yourself as a Flat yard after being a jumps yard for so long. 'I'm thrilled with how it's going and we've some lovely horses coming through. It's great fun and I've been doing the job 20 years so it's nice to have a new challenge.'
