ITV's Alison Hammond discusses impact of daily racist abuse 'you become numb'

Daily Record21-07-2025
This Morning's Alison Hammond was left opening up about the racist abuse she receives online on the ITV show, as she said she is 'numb' to it and 'ignores' it.
Alison Hammond has revealed the daily abuse she endures from people online when appearing on This Morning.

The ITV presenter made the confession while discussing the day's headlines on Monday's show, alongside co-host Dermot O'Leary.

During their conversation, they touched upon the England Lionesses' decision not to take the knee at their upcoming match against Italy this week.

This decision follows player Jess Carter receiving racist abuse online, leading the defender to issue a statement on social media.
The footballer informed her followers that she is stepping back from social media and leaving the situation for the team to handle, reports the Mirror.

Nick Ferrari shared his thoughts on the matter, saying: "The problem is, it's another major football tournament where we're actually not talking about the football, despite the fact that the Lionesses have done so well and let's wish them the best of luck tomorrow in the semis.
"We're actually talking again, a bit like the Arsenal lad in the penalties in 2021. We didn't talk about the football; we talked about the racism, and here we are, another big football tournament, and we're doing it again."
Alison Phillips pointed out that the media are discussing it due to the magnitude of the event, but she noted that for many people of colour, these types of experiences are a daily occurrence.

In response, Alison said: " I'll be honest with you, I get that all the time. You kind of become numb to it now. I have to ignore it all the time.
"I've seen loads of comments that are racist towards me, and I literally just ignore. You become numb."

Dermot appeared shocked by Alison's comment, reminding her that she shouldn't have to endure such treatment.
He asked what changes she believes could be implemented to prevent this from occurring.

She responded: "It would be very difficult to police. But, ultimately, I think Nick has made a good point in the fact that my age, the fact that I didn't have social media as a child, really doesn't bother me.
"I know these people online are not the people that I love. If my family were saying awful things like that, it would have a massive effect. But, it really doesn't affect me."
Dermot retorted: "But, they shouldn't be free to say it in the first place."
Alison reassured her co-host that negative comments don't affect her because she doesn't personally know the individuals making them.

Roma 'pushing to sign Man City teenager on loan with £29m option' just six months after he joined the Premier League giants

Roma have reportedly increased their offer to sign Manchester City youngster Claudio Echeverri, with the Serie A side seeking a loan with an option to buy. Echeverri, 19, agreed to join City from River Plate for £12.5million in January 2023, but remained on loan at the club for a year. The highly-rated attacking midfielder eventually joined Pep Guardiola 's squad in February. Echeverri has made three appearances for Man City to date, with the teenager coming off the bench in the FA Cup final, as well making a brief cameo on the final day of the Premier League season. The midfielder scored his first Man City goal against Al Ain in the Club World Cup in June, with the Argentine firing in a superb free kick for his new club. Echeverri's future remains in doubt, amid reports Man City had planned to loan him to their sister club Girona in Spain. Reports in Italy have claimed the teenager has turned down the move and wants to link up with fellow Argentinians Paulo Dybala and Matias Soule at Roma. According to the Rome based Corriere dello Sport, the Serie A side have submitted an offer to sign Echeverri on loan with an option to buy for £29million. The offer reportedly marks an increase from an initial £21million option. Roma are claimed to be insistent on having an option to buy to avoid increasing Echeverri's value next season, only for him to return to Man City. The club are said to have included an £35million buy-back clause in their offer, which would net them a £6million profit if activated by Man City. It is claimed Echeverri is keen to make the move, which is being pushed by Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini. Prior to joining Man City, Echeverri made 48 appearances in all competitions for River Plate in Argentina, contributing four goals and eight assists. The 19-year-old's stock rose further when he was the driving force during Argentina Under-20s run to the final at the South American Championships in January. Captaining the side, Echeverri netted six goals and recorded three assists during the tournament. Echeverri, who was handed his River Plate debut by former City defender Martin Demichelis, also shone at the Under 17 World Cup in 2023, scoring five goals.

Former Premier League star 'clears possessions and misses second day of training' in bid to force a move - after accusing his club of 'broken promises'

Ademola Lookman has reportedly cleared his possessions out of Atalanta's training ground as he bids to force a move to Serie A rivals Inter Milan. Lookman has been a key player for Atalanta since joining in 2022, with the forward reaching double figures for goals in the league in each of his three seasons at the club. The Nigerian international is best remembered for hisstarring role in the 2024 Europa League final, with his hat-trick against BayerLeverkusen helping the club win the trophy for the first time. Lookman confirmed in a statement this week that he hashanded in a transfer request, alleging he has been the victim of 'poortreatment' by the club, while accusing them of 'months of broken promises'. 'There have been numerous clubs approach Atalanta in thepast and I have previously always stayed loyal,' Lookman said. 'However, myself and the ownership of the club have been inagreement that now is the right time and the club were clear with me that if afair offer came in they would allow me to move. 'Despite now receiving an offer in alignment to what I believe had been discussed sadly the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand. 'As a result and after many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me as both a human being and as a professional footballer, sadly I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right and I feel that enough is enough. I can confirm I have now handed in a formal transfer request.' According to Sky Sport, Lookman on Tuesday failed to attend training for the second consecutive day, despite being scheduled to undergo an individual session to help his recovery from an injury. Lookman's attempts to force a move come after Atalanta rejected a £39million offer from Inter Milan. Atalanta chief executive Luca Percassi confirmed that Lookman will be allowed to leave this summer, but stressed he would not be able to join a Serie A rival. 'It's a good opportunity to clarify what happened,' Percassi said at a press conference. Last year, after a 20 million offer from PSG, the player had asked us to be sold. 'Atalanta, being a credible club, had promised to sell the player this window based on two conditions that he himself had asked of us: First, to go to a super, top European club, and that he would never be seen in Italy wearing a shirt other than Atalanta's, given what he did for the club and what he received from the club. 'Today, as you know, the situation is very different. The club is always careful when evaluating the value and timing of its players, but as always, it is Atalanta, the club, that decides.' Reports in Italy suggested Lookman and Atalanta could take legal action over the dispute. Lookman, who is contracted until 2027, could reportedly be fined by the club if he fails to attend training for the third consecutive day. In total, Lookman has scored 52 goals in 118 appearances for Atalanta, including netting 20 times in 40 matches last season. Atalanta finished third last season, behind champions Napoli and Inter Milan, to secure Champions League qualification.
