Andhra Health Minister warns of AMR crisis, calls for urgent action
Speaking at a symposium on 'Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness and Medical Responsibility' organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Andhra Pradesh Chapter at GMCANA in Guntur, the minister stressed the urgent need for action.
Reflecting on his journey from a non-medical background to serving as Health Minister, Yadav said his growing awareness of issues like AMR has been both sobering and motivating. He expressed concern over widespread self-medication, unregulated antibiotic use, and poor public awareness. 'Only seven Indian States have AMR action plans. This is a silent but escalating health emergency,' he said.

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday directed officials to ensure the strict implementation of the government's policy to establish a 100-bed hospital in every Assembly constituency, aiming to provide accessible and quality healthcare across Andhra Pradesh. During a review meeting with officials of the Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department at the Secretariat, the Chief Minister emphasised that government hospitals must be upgraded to the standards of private institutions, with special focus on healthcare access in tribal and underserved regions. Outlining the government's broader vision, Naidu said the State must prioritise public health through disease prevention and lifestyle awareness, rather than focusing solely on treatment. 'Medical expenses are fast becoming an unbearable burden for many families. Prevention is the only sustainable solution,' he said. He called for mass awareness campaigns to promote healthy food habits, pesticide-free organic produce, and lifestyle changes. Farmers and the general public must be sensitised through targeted education and actionable government plans, he added. A major announcement was the revival of the Yogadhyayana Parishad, a body that will promote traditional health systems such as yoga, naturopathy, Ayurveda, homoeopathy, and Unani medicine. A dedicated society will be created for this purpose, and staff will be recruited through the Medical Services Recruitment Board. Naidu stressed that yoga should become a daily habit and its benefits, including its role in promoting natural childbirth, must be widely publicised. He instructed officials to organise both online and offline yoga training sessions across the State. 'We already announced a Yoga Day declaration, but it must move beyond advertisements and into people's lives,' he said.

Create health awareness to curb future medical expenses: Andhra CM to officials
Amaravati, Jul 23 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday warned that future healthcare expenses could become an exorbitant financial burden, and directed officials to raise awareness about the importance of health. Reviewing the Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department, Naidu said people must also be educated on the dietary changes needed to lead healthier lives. 'As there is the danger of future healthcare expenses becoming exorbitant financial burdens, there is a need to undertake widespread awareness campaigns on health to address them," said Naidu. Highlighting the potential link between 'poor dietary habits and diseases like cancer", the chief minister stressed the need to promote pesticide-free, organic food, and asked officials to educate the public accordingly. According to Naidu, there is a need to raise awareness among people on protecting their health to reduce healthcare expenditure. Likewise, he directed officials to create an action plan to prevent illnesses, in addition to providing better healthcare services. Naidu also instructed officials to prepare the action plan after taking people's food habits into account, while also encouraging the consumption of organic food. In addition to promoting yoga widely among the masses, Naidu directed officials to strengthen traditional healthcare systems such as naturopathy, homeopathy, Ayurveda, and Unani. Naidu claimed that C-section (caesarean) deliveries are 'increasing even when not medically necessary", and added that 'practising yoga could help avoid surgery and promote normal deliveries." Superbugs Threaten Millions Of Lives And $2 Trillion Loss By 2050, Study Warns
A new study warns that antibiotic-resistant "superbugs" could kill millions more people globally and cost the world economy nearly $2 trillion each year by 2050. The UK government-funded research, conducted by the Center for Global Development think tank, reveals that rising antimicrobial resistance (AMR) could cause annual global GDP losses of around \$1.7 trillion over the next 25 years. Wealthy nations such as the US, UK, and EU are expected to face some of the heaviest economic and health impacts. The findings have sparked criticism over recent international aid cuts. The UK government recently announced the end of funding for the Fleming Fund, which helps combat AMR in low- and middle-income countries. Similarly, the Trump administration confirmed \$9 billion in cuts to its foreign aid budget, while several European nations have also reduced overseas aid spending. Experts say such measures are short-sighted, as tackling AMR globally is vital to protect health systems and economies worldwide. Without urgent action, drug-resistant infections could become one of the biggest health and economic threats of the century. Anthony McDonnell, the lead author of the research and a policy fellow at the Center for Global Development, told The Guardian:"When we conducted our research on the economic impacts of antimicrobial resistance, it was anticipated that resistance rates would continue to follow historical trends. "However, the sudden cuts to Official Development Assistance by the US, which has cut its aid spend by roughly 80%; the UK, which has announced aid cuts from 0.5% to 0.3% of gross national income; and substantial reductions by France, Germany, and others, could drive up resistance rates in line with the most pessimistic scenario in our research. "Even countries that have been successful in keeping AMR rates under control cannot afford to be complacent. Unless AMR programmes are protected from aid cuts, resistance rates across the world will likely increase at a rate in line with the worst-affected countries. "This would result in millions more people dying worldwide, including across G7 nations. Investing in treatment for bacterial infections now will save lives and deliver billions in long-term economic returns." The research calculated the economic and health burden of antibiotic resistance for 122 countries and forecast that in that in this most pessimistic scenario, by 2050, GDP losses in China could reach just under $722bn a year, the US $295.7bn, the EU $187bn, Japan $65.7bn and the UK $58.6bn.
