Andhra Health Minister warns of AMR crisis, calls for urgent action
VIJAYAWADA: Health, Medical and Family Welfare Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav on Saturday sounded an alarm over the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), warning it could cause 4 crore deaths globally by 2050 if left unchecked. Speaking at a symposium on 'Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness and Medical Responsibility' organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Andhra Pradesh Chapter at GMCANA in Guntur, the minister stressed the urgent need for action. Reflecting on his journey from a non-medical background to serving as Health Minister, Yadav said his growing awareness of issues like AMR has been both sobering and motivating. He expressed concern over widespread self-medication, unregulated antibiotic use, and poor public awareness. 'Only seven Indian States have AMR action plans. This is a silent but escalating health emergency,' he said.

Minister Satya Kumar Yadav emphasises preventive healthcare, holistic wellness
GUNTUR: Health, Medical and Family Welfare Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav underscored the importance of preventive healthcare and holistic wellness. Addressing the gathering in Guntur on Sunday, he noted the expansive reach of Arogya Bharati, operating in 95% of districts across the country with over 877 volunteers. He appreciated its grassroots work including the School Health Programme, Ayur-AI, and campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles. The minister expressed concern over the rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) due to changing lifestyles and poor diets. He said 4.9 crore individuals were screened under NCD Survey 3.0, which identified 40 lakh diabetic and 30 lakh hypertension cases in Andhra Pradesh. He added that AI-driven predictive analytics is now aiding preventive planning and health resource allocation. The health minister emphasised promoting Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Siddha, and Naturopathy. A proposal for Rs 1,000 crore has been submitted to the Centre to boost AYUSH infrastructure in the State. He urged doctors in private practice to volunteer at government hospitals once a week.

North Andhra districts gear up for the International Yoga Day
North Andhra districts — Vizianagaram/Parvatipuram/Srikakulam — are expected to play key role in the culmination day of Yogandhra with mobilization of more than one lakh people out of 3.3 lakh persons who would perform yoga on June 21, International Yoga Day celebrations being organized from Ramakrishna Beach to Bheemunipatnam Beach of Visakhapatnam. Special Chief Secretary Health, Medical and Family Welfare and Yogandhra-2025 State Coordinator M.T Krishna directed the senior officials of North Andhra districts to strive hard to make the event as a grand success. According to him, the event would be a memorable one as all of them would practice yoga in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Naidu all along the 26 km long beach road. Mr. Krishna Babu felt that Healthy Andhra Pradesh would be a reality when people would practice yoga which would make them fit and protect them from many diseases. The government is also making arrangements for yoga day celebrations in every nook and corner of the State apart from the major event planned at RK Beach-Bhimili Beach. Around 2.39 crore people registered their names in Yogandhra portal and they would practice yoga in the selected places of their respective villages, mandals and district headquarters. Parvatipuram Collector A. Shyam Prasad told The Hindu that 5,45,937 persons will practice yoga in several places including remote tribal areas of Gumma Lakshmipuram, Kurupam and other areas. Vizianagaram Collector B. R. Ambedkar and Joint Collector Sedhu Madhavan said that as many as 660 buses had been arranged for the transport of people to Visakhapatnam. Mr. Sedhu Madhavan told The Hindu that as many as 9.63 lakh people will perform yoga in a professional manner in different places on June 21 as they were trained under professionals in the last one month. Srikakulam Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar said that yoga culture had spread very quickly with the collective efforts of the officials, members of various organizations. He said that 10,86,985 persons who registered their names would create a record on the international Yoga Day. Member of Art of Living Yarlagadda Geetha Srikanth said that many women would also take part in Yoga at RK Beach and several parts of Srikakulam districts with the increased awareness over the benefits of yoga. Ms. Geeta who caught the attention of the district administration with her yoga performance on water is keen to mobilize around 800 women from Visakhapatnam for the Big Day event at RK Beach of Visakhapatnam.

Malaria month and TB awareness posters released
Puttaparthi: Under the guidance of the Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare, Government of Andhra Pradesh, 'Malaria Month' is being observed from June 1 to June 30 with the slogan 'Malaria Elimination Begins with Us.' As part of this campaign, Sri Sathya Sai District Collector TS Chetan and District Medical and Health Officer Dr Fairoza Begum released awareness wall posters on Monday. The event was attended by District Assistant Malaria Officer Lakshman Naik, Sub-Unit Officers BV Ramana and Gopinaik, DEO Dhanunjaya Reddy, and Health Assistant Shiva. Officials also urged the public to voluntarily participate in the World Blood Donor Day blood donation camps to be held on June 14. Citizens aged between 18 to 45 years are eligible to donate blood. As part of the 100-Day TB Vulnerable Program, the Collector also unveiled wall posters to spread awareness. The event was also attended by MOT Dr Gayathri, PPM Veera Nagendra, and DPC Mallikarjuna.

‘Check BP – Stop Stroke' campaign launched in Guntur
VIJAYAWADA: Special Chief Secretary for Health, Medical and Family Welfare, Sri MT Krishna Babu, inaugurated the 'Check BP – Stop Stroke' campaign at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Guntur on Friday. Krishna praised Dr Vijaya, President of the Indian Stroke Association (ISA), for initiating the campaign to raise awareness about controlling high blood pressure to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney failure. He flagged off the mobile BP screening bus and highlighted the government's efforts to provide free hypertension medication through PHCs, CHCs, and government hospitals. ISA President Vijaya explained that hypertension is the leading cause of brain strokes, which affect over 18 lakh people annually in India, with 25% of cases occurring in individuals under 40 years. She stressed that 80% of strokes are preventable through BP monitoring. Dr Arvind Sharma, Secretary of ISA, announced plans to extend the campaign across AP and other states. Free BP checks will be conducted at various centres across Guntur.
