Atalanta secures Champions League spot; Venezia boosts Serie A survival with win
The victory moved the Bergamo club seven points clear of Juventus and Lazio with only two rounds remaining. The top four qualify automatically for next season's Champions League.
Nigeria international Ademola Lookman put Atalanta ahead in the ninth minute with his 15th league goal.
Former Atalanta midfielder Bryan Cristante leveled with a header before halftime.
The clincher came from Ibrahim Sulemana.
All was not lost for Roma. The capital club was sixth, one point behind Juventus and Lazio.
Venezia beat Fiorentina 2-1 and took a giant step towards securing its Serie A status for another year.
It rose out of the relegation zone and into fourth-from-last place. The last three teams go down and with two matches left to play Venezia holds its destiny in its own hands.
It is a point above Lecce and Empoli, and its two final games are at Cagliari and at home to Juventus.
Fali Cande on the hour mark and Gaetano Oristanio eight minutes later put Venezia in the driving seat at Stadio Pierluigi Penzo. Rolando Mandragora pulled a goal back for the visitor with 13 minutes remaining.
The result was a massive blow to Fiorentina's hopes of securing European football next season. It remained ninth, three places and four points outside the European spots.

However, had the visit really happened, it would have drawn an even bigger crowd than what was seen during the late Maradona's visit to Kerala,' he said. K.V. Sanjay, a Maradu native working in Muscat, was downcast as his idol's visit back home was called off yet again. 'A bunch of us friends here in Muscat were planning to come home just to watch Messi. At the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy, which witnessed a high-level international hockey tournament in Chennai, after 16 long years, one of the star attractions was Karthi Selvam. The forward from Tamil Nadu got plenty of love from the local crowd but after a decent outing in the team, he didn't make the cut for subsequent squads. On Monday, he found his name on the team sheet once more as Hockey India announced the 24-member squad for a four-match tour of Australia that is going to be a key series in determining the squad for Asia Cup in Rajgir, a World Cup qualifier. With the retirement of Lalit Upadhyay opening up a spot in the forward line, Karthi – and another youngster in Aditya Lalage – enter the fray along with Mandeep Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, and Dilpreet Singh. Karthi's recent return to the core probable group for the national camp and subsequent call-up for the India 'A' side followed good performances in the revamped Hockey India League earlier this year, where he impressed for the Tamil Nadu Dragons. The recent tour to Europe with India 'A' was a shot in the arm. 'It instilled fresh hope for India comeback for me. It's going to be two years since I last wore the India colours and there've been a lot of learnings for me in this tour, which had a combination of young players and those who have played for India,' Karthi told Hockey India before the squad was announced. The other defenders in the squad are Sumit, Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay, Amit Rohidas, Nilam Sanjeep Xess, Jugraj Singh while Karnataka's Poovanna CB comes in as a fresh face. Young Rajinder Singh, who is often likened to stalwart former India Captain Sardar Singh, will feature among the midfielders along with Raj Kumar Pal, Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Rabichandra Singh Moirangthem, and Vishnu Kant Singh. Speaking about the importance of this Tour ahead of the Asia Cup, Chief Coach Craig Fulton said, 'We are heading to Perth Australia to sharpen up ahead of the Asia Cup in Bihar. The focus will be on improving our physical conditioning and technical execution through quality training and warm up matches.' Fulton also spoke about testing youngsters in the squad and giving them the exposure ahead of important outings. Palhinha back in Premier League as Spurs sign him on loan from Bayern
Tottenham has bolstered its midfield ahead of its return to the Champions League by signing Portugal international Jao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich with an option to buy. The defensive midfielder returns to London and the Premier League a year after leaving Fulham for a much-hyped but largely unsuccessful move to Bayern. He has three years left on his Bayern contract. Bayern and Tottenham both confirmed the move Sunday. Palhinha offers a similar defensive midfield option to Spurs' Rodrigo Bentancur or Yves Bissouma. Expectations for Palhinha at Bayern were high but his time spent there had ended with the Portuguese midfielder spending most of the Club World Cup on the bench. Palhinha was a key target for Bayern in 2023, when then-coach Thomas Tuchel wanted to shore up Bayern's midfield. Palhinha even came to Munich for a medical but Bayern's deal with Fulham collapsed at the last moment. When Bayern finally did sign Palhinha for a reported fee of nearly 50 million euros (then $54.2 million) a year later, Vincent Kompany was the new coach. Palhinha's season was affected by injuries or illness but, even when he was fit, Kompany often preferred youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic in the midfield instead. Palhinha only started 10 of the 25 games he played for Bayern in all competitions and was an unused substitute in four of Bayern's five games at the Club World Cup. It's the second time this off-season that Tottenham has signed a player who was out of favor at Bayern after making forward Mathys Tel's loan move permanent.
