Forest dept sounds alert over possible crocodile attacks in Odishas Kendrapara

News184 days ago
Kendrapara (Odisha), Jul 21 (PTI) The forest department of Odisha has sounded an alert of possible attack from saltwater crocodile in certain villages in Kendrapara district following reports that reptiles were sighted in the adjoining Brahmani river which is in spate, officials said on Monday.
The crocodiles are from the Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary's water-bodies and the reptiles often stray into the connected river system.
The rise in water level has brought in its wake the crocodile menace, with reptiles reportedly on the prowl in the low-lying areas on the upper stream of the Brahmani river.
'A departmental alert has been sounded in villages that have come under partial flooding of the Brahmani river water," Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF), Manas Kumar Das, said.
The crocodiles may attack people in villages under Rajnagar, Pattamundai and Aul blocks, the forest official said.
'With the river in spate, there are reports of crocodiles straying into water bodies in and around the places of human habitation. We have warned the residents not to venture into the flooded river and adjoining water bodies," he said.
Juvenile crocodiles used to stray in search of food and leave their original habitat. But due to their natural instinct, they return within a few days, said a crocodile expert. PTI COR BBM NN

Delhi sees sweltering Friday with warm winds, high humidity

New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) It was a sticky, scorching Friday in the national capital as residents battled hot sun, warm winds, and soaring humidity levels. With the mercury nearing 37 degrees Celsius and barely any rain during the day, the weather offered little relief. The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi's main weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 36.9 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, while the minimum settled at 28.0 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels fluctuated between 58 and 72 per cent, making the afternoon hours particularly uncomfortable. Among other stations, Lodi Road was the hottest at 37.0 degrees Celsius, followed by Palam at 36.8 degrees Celsius, Ayanagar at 36.1 degrees Celsius, and Ridge at 35.0 degrees Celsius. No rainfall was recorded across the city between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, except for a slight 0.4 mm registered at Ayanagar. However, by evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a brief alert predicting light rain in various parts of the city, including Rohini, Narela, Pitampura, Badli, Mundka, Paschim Vihar, and Punjabi Bagh, providing hope for relief. The neighbouring areas in Haryana and Rajasthan, such as Ballabhgarh, Fatehabad and Bhadra, were also expected to see light showers. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms with rain for Saturday, with temperatures expected to hover between 28 and 35 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the city's air quality remained in the 'moderate' category, with an overall AQI of 136, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The CPCB categorises an AQI between 0-50 as 'good", 51-100 as 'satisfactory", 101-200 as 'moderate", 201-300 as 'poor", 301-400 as 'very poor", and 401-500 as 'severe". Mumbai to see more intense rain over the weekend: Here's what IMD and police say

Mumbai is bracing for an extended spell of rain over the weekend after Friday, July 25, began with a downpour and several parts of the financial capital saw continuous rain. The weather department has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and most of its surroundings, warning of more intense rain — 'heavy to very heavy showers'. Municipal workers check water level on a flooded road during rain at Andheri subway in Mumbai.(PTI) While a red alert implies the most severe "take action" warning, while orange and yellow alerts suggest "be prepared to take action" and 'be aware', respectively. Local train services on were delayed on Friday by 10 to 12 minutes, while speed was lowered across many lines as a precaution or due to low visibility. Orange alert means people in Mumbai should stay indoors if possible — police have issued an advisory saying that — and stock up on essential supplies too. In Thane, too, the IMD has predicted "heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places" for Saturday and Sunday. For Raigad, a red alert has been sounded as the entire western Indian region is seeing monsoon rain in abundance over the past few days. A forecast similar to that for Mumbai was issued for the districts of Konkan-Goa region and the ghat areas of central Maharashtra as well. 'Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph' along with 'light to moderate' rainfall is forecast for the Marathwada region. Mumbai police posted on its X handle on Friday morning: 'Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai and nearby districts, citizens are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, avoid coastal areas, and drive cautiously." The post further read: "Our officials and staff are on high alert and ready to assist Mumbaikars. In case of any emergency, please dial 100 / 112 / 103.'
