‘The Scratch and Sniff Chronicles': Book mixes Bengali mystery with gothic flair

The Printa day ago
'Murder mysteries are my happy place. I unabashedly love every trope related to the whodunnit style. That said, the germ of this novel really came from the lead protagonist Olympia Ghoshal Chattergé, or Ollie, the likable doofus, who has lived in my head for several years.
'The Scratch and Sniff Chronicles', published by Niyogi Books, is written by Singapore-based writer Hemangini Dutt Majumder.
New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) Blending elements of Bengal's detective tradition with gothic fiction, a new book promises a gripping whodunnit laced with humor and unexpected twists and turns.
'… I thought it would be fascinating to flip the script and make her condition a sort of super-power rather than an affliction,' Majumder, who previously authored children's book 'The Mystery of the Many, Many Missing Things', said in a statement.
The story follows Ollie, a young woman with an uncanny sense of smell, an unusual symptom of a health condition, and a rare female wine sommelier and beverage consultant.
Her life changes quite dramatically when she and her entire family decide to relocate to their ancestral estate, Neelbari, in Chandannagar, where strange and mysterious incidents begin to unfold.
'Is the malevolent spirit of her great-grandmother really haunting Neelbari? And why has their arrival caused so much alarm? What secrets are the walls and gardens of the hundred-year-old estate hiding? Why does no one seem to be telling the truth? What follows is a gripping whodunnit with ample doses of humour and delicious twists and turns?' are among the questions that unravel in the story.
The book is endorsed by the likes of celebrated writer and Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) co-director Namita Gokhale and former diplomat TCA Raghavan.
While Raghavan lauds Majumder for bringing to life a 'lovable but eccentric Bengali family with wit and empathy', Gokhale described the novel as a 'multilayered literary tribute to the classical Bangla whodunnit'.
'It is an olfactory journey through stories and spectres and scary situations,' she added.
The book, priced at Rs 495, is available for purchase across online and offline stores. PTI MG MG MG

Romantic drama Saiyaara earns Rs 119 crore worldwide: YRF

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) Mohit Suri's romantic drama 'Saiyaara", featuring debutant Ahaan Pandey and actor Aneet Padda, registered the highest opening for a romantic film ever by grossing Rs 119 crore in the first three days, the makers said. The movie, which marks Pandey's big screen debut and a critically-praised turn for Padda, who previously featured in 'Big Girls Don't Cry" and Kajol-starrer 'Salaam Venky", earned Rs 101.75 (gross) and Rs 84 crore (nett) in India and brought in Rs 17.25 from international markets. Helmed by Mohit Suri of 'Ek Villain" and 'Aashiqui 2" fame, the movie is produced by Yash Raj Films. The film also marked the highest worldwide opening weekend for a debutant-led film. Pandey is actor Ananya Pandey's cousin. The film's impressive three-day run at the box office has beat lifetime collection of other debuts of star kids like Alia Bhatt's 'Student of the Year" and Jahnvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khattar's 'Dhadak", which earned Rs 70 crore and Rs 73 crore (lifetime). 'Saiyaara" follows Krish, played by Pandey, a fiery, ambitious musician, and Vaani, played by Padda, a shy lyricist recovering from heartbreak. The chemistry of the lead pair, built through soulful songwriting sessions and raw emotional moments, is the heart of the film, reads the official logline. 'Saiyaara" opened with Rs 22 crore, earned Rs 26.25 crore on day two and it has made Rs 35.75 crore on day three according to Yash Raj Films in the domestic box office amounting to 84 crore. In the international box office, the film has made Rs 17.25 crore. It is also Suri's highest opening among his other films — 'Ek Villain" earned Rs 16 crore on day one, 'Aashiqui 2" made over Rs 6 crore and 'Murder 2" earned almost 7 crore on the first day of their release. The film is the first and only romance movie to gross over Rs 100 crore in its opening weekend. The film is among the highest grossing opening weekend alongside films like Vicky Kaushal's 'Chhava" (Rs 122.43 crore), Salman Khan's 'Sikandar" (Rs 90.25 crore) and Akshay Kumar's ensemble comedy 'Housefull 5" (Rs 91.83 crore). Yash Raj Films have requested exhibitors to not hike ticket prices in order to keep them accessible for the youth supporting the film. The production house had also previously decided that Pandey and Padda not engage in promotions of the film. The music of 'Saiyaara", which features seven songs composed by Mithoon, Sachet-Parampara, Tanishk Bagchi, Rishabh Kant, Vishal Mishra, Faheem Abdullah and Arslan Nisami, is already a chartbuster. Alongside Pandey and Padda, the romance also stars Geeta Agarwal, Rajesh Kumar, Varun Badola and Shaad Randhawa in key roles. The Call of Music: Book documents stories of 8 Hindustani musicians

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) From sarod virtuoso Alam Khan, son of the late legend Ali Akbar Khan, to musician and queer transmasculine activist Rumi Harish, 'The Call of Music" explores the journeys of eight distinctive voices in Hindustani music — ranging from acclaimed performers to unsung torchbearers. Written by Hindustani vocalist Priya Purushothaman, the book explores the personal journeys of dedicated music practitioners, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of music-making while also shedding light on the pervasive influence of social class within the realm of classical music. It is published by Hachette India. 'I wondered about all the stories I wouldn't get to hear or read, out of sheer lack of access or documentation. This compelled me to seek these individuals and see if they would give me the privilege of sharing a slice of their lives, coming together as something akin to an ethnographic survey of select Hindustani musicians in the twenty-first century," Purushothaman, who also authored 'Living Music: Conversations with Pandit Dinkar Kaikini", said in a statement. From the narrow lanes of Kashipur to the sweeping hills of San Rafael, the artists profiled in the book emerge from vastly different worlds. Yet, each has devoted their life to music with 'unflinching conviction and artistic courage". The lineup includes Shubhada Paradkar, a leading figure of the Agra gharana; acclaimed violinist Kala Ramnath; sarangi player and the youngest featured artist, Suhail Yusuf Khan; accomplished tabla player Yogesh Samsi; and vocalist Shubha Joshi. 'What binds them is a profound surrender to the art, a deep-seated devotion that transcends convention and circumstance. Together, they form a luminous, emotionally textured portrait of a musical legacy – rooted and radically alive," said the publisher in its description of the book. The book has been endorsed by the likes of historian Ramachandra Guha and acclaimed Hindustani classical vocalist Shubha Mudgal. While Guha describes the book as a 'rich and beautiful meditation" on the greatest of our art forms, Mudgal notes that Purushothaman's writing 'reflects in totality the rigour and introspection that has marked her journey as a singer". 'As a lover of our 'shastriya sangeet' I found this book utterly compelling. So will readers with a more general interest in narrative non-fiction, and those seeking to make of their profession a calling," Guha adds. 'The Call of Music: 8 Stories of Hindustani Musicians", priced at Rs 699, is available for sale across online and offline stores.
