Disgraced Korean Influencer Returns To Social Media Despite Being Sentenced For Sexual Assault

Hype Malaysia2 days ago
It's a sad reality that many sexual offenders could still have a platform despite being found guilty of their crimes. Recently, the return of a disgraced South Korean influencer sparked outrage amongst netizens.
South Korean influencer Seo Won Jeong (원정맨), known by his TikTok account @/ox_zung, was once very popular, with over 55 million followers on the video platform alone. However, in 2023, he stopped posting online, seemingly going on hiatus. Several months later, reports emerged that Seo Won Jeong was under investigation for his involvement in a sexual assault case. He was also accused of filming the assault.
In April 2025, news reports revealed that Seo Won Jeong was sentenced to more than three years in prison. However, a second trial reduced his sentence, due to lack of evidence, to one year and six months in jail, suspended for two years. The TikToker also shared an apology post in May 2025, seemingly admitting to the allegations. Despite the sentencing and his admittance, Seo Won Jeong recently returned to posting videos.
On 3rd July (Thursday), the social media personality shared a video of him cleaning his home before facing the camera and bowing. He then shared another video, returning to his usual comedy content. Unsurprisingly, this move sparked outrage from netizens. Many expressed anger at Seo Won Jeong for brazenly returning to social media after his sexual assault trial. Some even called him shameless for continuing his influencer career despite being charged with a serious crime.
However, some fans showed support for the TikToker's return. Some comments even said they look forward to seeing more postings from Seo Won Jeong. His recent videos are also gaining traction, with his most recent video, posted on 4th July 2025 (Friday), gaining over 300,000 views in just 12 hours. It's also worth noting that the influencer's TikTok follower count is still in the 50 million range despite his months-long hiatus.
Netizens are calling for TikTok users to boycott and stop providing a platform for Seo Won Jeong, arguing he won't feel remorseful for his actions if he continues to be popular. What are your thoughts on this?

Park Sung-hoon says it was fun to film Squid Game & Queen Of Tears at same time

Hyun-ju (right) or Player 120 is a highly trained ex-Special Forces soldier. Photo: Handout Park Sung-hoon recalls that, for a while, he was viewed unfavourably by the public. That's because he had just come off playing two particularly unlikeable characters – first in The Glory (2022), then in Queen Of Tears (2024). In both dramas, the characters he played made life miserable for the leading ladies. 'I played two villains back-to-back, and whenever I went out to eat, some people would actually be mad at me for those roles,' the 40-year-old actor tells StarLifestyle with a laugh over Zoom. Fortunately, things began to change when the second season of Squid Game premiered at the end of 2024. In it, Park portrays Hyun-ju, also known as Player 120 – a highly trained ex-Special Forces soldier who was discharged after coming out as a trans woman. She enters the deadly competition to win the cash prize in order to foot her transition surgery. 'I'm really happy that I have played Hyun-Ju, who is such a cool character. She kind of turned everything around for me and made people like me,' says Park fondly of his character. 'Actually, I was shooting Squid Game and Queen Of Tears almost simultaneously, and it was really fun for me, going back and forth between two totally opposite characters,' he adds. Hyun-ju quickly became a fan-favourite thanks to her courage and always trying to do the right thing, even in dangerous situations. Park Sung-hoon says his character in 'Squid Game' is a cool person. Photo: Handout However, when the series premiered, there were criticisms about casting a male actor instead of a transgender actor for the role of Hyun-ju. Series creator-director Hwang Dong-hyuk told an American outlet that he did anticipate that this matter would crop up. 'In the beginning we were doing our research, and I was thinking of doing an authentic casting of a trans actor... When we researched in Korea, there are close to no actors that are openly trans,' he explained to Entertainment Weekly . Nonetheless, Hyun-ju stands out among the players in Squid Game especially in the scenes where she's interacting with Geum-ja (Player 149, played by Kang Ae-sim) and Jun-hee (Player 222, played by Jo Yu-ri). According to Park, the camaraderie among cast members helped strengthen their on-screen chemistry, even though they were always filming intense, emotionally charged scenes. 'We often talked about our performances, and about life in general. After wrapping for the day, we'd sometimes go for drinks just to relax and chat,' he says. 'I think the bond formed really naturally. Since most scenes were shot in chronological order, we didn't have to force the chemistry – it built up on its own, with emotions stacking scene by scene. 'So even though some scenes were emotionally draining, the connection made it all feel easier.' South Korean stars Kang Ae-sim (lef) and Park Sung-hoon bonded while making the show. Photo: AFP Next up for Park is a new drama opposite Han Ji-min, set to premiere in 2026, an entertainment portal reported. Only earlier this year, he was dropped from another K-drama, The Tyrant's Chef , after receiving backlash for uploading on social media an image of a porn video parodying Squid Game . Reflecting on the Squid Game experience, Park says: 'Over the past few months, I've been doing promotions overseas and met so many people – it's been fascinating to see how many of them already know me and welcome me so warmly. 'It still hasn't fully sunk in, especially since I look a bit different now with a new hairstyle, but people still recognise me instantly. 'It's been such a cool experience. And I really hope it opens up more opportunities for me to be part of global projects in the future.' Squid Game is available on Netflix.

MCA rejects MCMC legal demand for Pahang youth chief's apology

PETALING JAYA: MCA has rejected a legal demand from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for Pahang MCA Youth chief Wong Siew Mun to issue a formal apology, stressing that freedom of speech must not be suppressed. MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the party held an urgent meeting and unanimously agreed that MCMC's demands were both unreasonable and unacceptable. 'MCA fully supports Wong Siew Mun. We firmly uphold the principle that freedom of expression must not be curtailed or compromised. We also believe she acted appropriately,' he said in a TikTok post on Friday (July 4). Dr Wee said Wong had received a legal letter on Thursday from a law firm representing MCMC. The letter reportedly demanded that she take down a Bahasa Malaysia TikTok video on freedom of speech, issue a public apology within 24 hours—with the content subject to MCMC's approval—and provide a written undertaking not to repeat similar comments on any social media platform. Failure to comply would result in civil legal action. Describing the conditions as excessive, Dr Wee said MCA would provide full legal support to Wong. He added that the party had assembled a legal team, including human rights lawyer Edmund Bon, to represent her in all legal proceedings. He reaffirmed MCA's long-standing stance on safeguarding civil liberties, especially the right to express opinions without undue interference or intimidation. On June 18, Wong was summoned by police over comments she made about the government's collection of mobile phone data. She is being investigated for allegedly causing public alarm and misusing network facilities. The investigation follows a TikTok post on 6 June, in which Wong questioned MCMC's move to collect mobile phone data from telecommunications providers. 'The video I posted was based on facts reported by mainstream media and official statements made by a minister and a government agency confirming that mobile phone data is indeed being collected from telcos,' Wong said. She is being investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, relating to causing public fear and misuse of network facilities. Earlier, MCMC clarified that the Mobile Phone Data Collection Initiative involves only eight types of anonymised data from network providers. It does not include personally identifiable information such as names, identity card numbers, or phone numbers. Instead, the data collected includes information such as the Mobile Station International Subscriber Directory Number (MSISDN), unique ID, mobile country code, and GPS coordinates of telco towers, among others. The data collection had raised privacy concerns. Dr Wee had highlighted that the government's efforts to collate detailed records of phone calls and internet usage from telecommunications firms are a violation of the people's right concerning their personal data. He questioned the necessity of such detailed information, especially when MCMC itself clarified that the data is intended for policymaking in the ICT and tourism sectors. 'This isn't about trust in the current government. The real question is: why collect such detailed data on citizens? 'If you're recording who we call, how long we speak, our IP addresses and precise locations—complete with time and date stamps—anyone with access could easily trace it back to our identities,' he had said. @drweekasiong MCA akan terus mempertahankan hak dan kebebasan bersuara rakyat Malaysia sepertimana yang dijamin dalam Perlembagaan Persekutuan.
