Weekly poll: would you buy the Sony Xperia 1 VII?

GSM Arena25-05-2025
Sony doesn't make many phones these days, but the models it does release are like nothing else on the market. With the Sony Xperia 1 VII the company has fixed some of the issues that fans complain about, but many still remain.
Sony Xperia 1 VII
The Mark 7 promises 4 OS updates. After that, you won't have the latest Android, but you will have a secure phone with patches for two more years. That's much better than the Mark 6, which only got 3 OS updates and one extra year of security patches.
That longevity is important because the Xperia 1 VII costs a whopping £1,400/€1,500 in the UK and Europe and that is only with 12GB of RAM and 256GB storage. Asia will get a 512GB variant, North America might not get the phone at all. Sony Xperia 1 VII 5G
Yes, storage is expandable, but microSD cards are slower than internal storage and high resolution video at high frame rates (the phone does up to 4K @ 120fps) will be a pain to transfer from a slow memory card.
Speaking of video, we were hoping for better results. Also, the new ultra-wide camera is great and delivered some great shots, but the telephoto camera still has flaws – despite being the only one with proper optical zoom.
The Xperia 1 VII has features you won't find on many (any?) flagships
Besides the microSD slot, the Xperia 1 VII stands out with a 3.5mm headphone jack and a two-stage shutter key. However, battery life is worse than last year and charging is quite slow. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is fast, but poor cooling significantly impacts sustained performance.
Read our review and watch our video review for more details. Before we ask for your thoughts on the phone, let's introduce the competition.
With a €1,500 price tag, the Sony is up against the very best models from Xiaomi, Oppo, vivo, Apple, Google, Samsung and everyone else, really. And these Pro and Ultra phones are cheaper than the Sony.
Xiaomi 15 Ultra • Oppo Find X8 Pro • vivo X200 Pro
Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max • Google Pixel 9 Pro XL • Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
Of course, if you still use wired headphones or want to carry a few terabytes of data with you or want to use your phone as an external monitor for a Sony camera, there's only one phone that can do all that – the Sony Xperia 1 VII. It's a rather specific niche, but it's a niche likely to attract people with spending money.
So, what do you think – would you buy the Sony Xperia 1 VII or has Sony completely lost the plot?

Samsung Galaxy S25 FE full specs leak

Samsung's Galaxy S25 FE has been in the rumors a lot lately, and today a full list of its most important specs has been outed. Let's dive right in. The phone is powered by the Exynos 2400 SoC, a slight upgrade from the Exynos 2400e in its predecessor. This is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128 or 256GB of storage. Samsung Galaxy S24 FE The S25 FE comes with a 6.7-inch 1080x2340 AMOLED screen with 120 Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass Victus on top, a 50 MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture and OIS, a 12 MP f/2.2 ultrawide, an 8 MP f/2.4 telephoto with 3x optical zoom and OIS, a 12 MP f/2.2 selfie snapper, and a 4,500 mAh battery with support for 45W wired and 15W wireless charging. It measures 161.3 x 76.6 x 7.4mm and weighs 190g. It's IP68 rated for dust and water resistance. It will launch running Android 16 with One UI 8 on top. So, compared to its predecessor, the S25 FE has a better chipset, a higher-res selfie camera, faster wired charging, and a smaller battery - the S24 FE has a 4,700 mAh cell. That wasn't a great size to begin with, but cutting it even further... we can't say we necessarily understand Samsung's logic here. Anyway, according to Samsung itself, the S25 FE will launch earlier in the year than the S24 FE did - and that one was unveiled at the end of September. Samsung Galaxy S24 FE Source

Apple has already sold more than 3 billion iPhones

Vlad, 01 August 2025 If you've been wondering what the total number of iPhones ever sold is, we now have the answer, straight from Apple itself: as of today, over 3 billion. This was revealed by Apple CEO Tim Cook during the company's earnings call a few hours ago. Apple reached one billion iPhones sold in 2016, and is believed to have gone up to two billion sometime in 2021, although that hasn't been officially confirmed so far. And now, four years after that, another billion units have been sold. Cook said iPhone sales were up by double digits in the second quarter of this year (April to June), and Apple earned $94 billion in revenue, which was up 10% over Q2 of last year. Interestingly, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who is always in the know with Apple-related stuff, has implied that the uptick in iPhone sales during this quarter might have been due to people panic-buying as a consequence of fear-mongering claims on the internet "predicting" that iPhones would end up costing $3,000 to $25,000 because of new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Apple says the new tariffs cost it $800 million in Q2, and it expects the number to rise to $1.1 billion in Q3 (July to September). In September, the company is due to unveil the new iPhone 17 family, which is rumored to include the very thin iPhone 17 Air, a replacement for the Plus model that has so far been the worst-selling of the series. The announcement is expected to come on September 8, 9, or 10. Source

Samsung Galaxy A17 4G and A17 5G listed in Europe, here are the prices

Vlad, 01 August 2025 Samsung's upcoming Galaxy A17 has been spotted in some certifications recently, and then it was outed in leaked renders. Today, it's gone one step further, being listed by a European retailer. The listings don't give us any more images, but do reveal the pricing for both the 4G and 5G models, as well as (at least some of) their colorways. The Galaxy A17 4G costs €289.90 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and will be offered in black, gray, and light blue. There should be lower-end options too, with less RAM and storage, by the way. The Galaxy A17 5G is listed at €319.90 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and this one comes in black, blue, and gray. Clearly these are not exhaustive listings though (once again, keep in mind that there will most likely be other RAM/storage combos on offer as well), so we assume more colors could also be launched. According to past rumors and leaks, the Galaxy A17 5G will be powered by Samsung's Exynos 1380 SoC, and will have a 5,000 mAh battery with support for 25W wired charging. It will run Android 15 when it launches, with One UI 7 on top. Its screen could be a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with FHD+ resolution, while for cameras expect a 50 MP main with OIS, a 5 MP ultrawide, and a 2 MP macro. The Galaxy A17 4G will be powered by the MediaTek Helio G99 SoC. It too will run Android 15. Source (in Italian) | Via
