Blumenthal, officials warn Connecticut travelers to check passports for validity

MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — With the summer travel season in full swing, the Connecticut Passport Agency and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) are warning travelers about a lesser-known passport rule that can cause confusion and delays.
It can also cost travelers thousands of dollars.
New traffic pattern at Tweed-New Haven airport aims to reduce congestion
Sanatana Edmonds with the agency is urging people to 'check your passports to ensure six months of validity left on them.'
Officials say several destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia require a person's passport to be valid for three to six months after their departure or entry date.
It's not only countries, according to Blumenthal. He says some airlines also follow the rule.
'They'll look at your passport and they'll say 'we can't let you on the plane,'' he said. 'We've seen people lose money, but more heartbreak.'
In addition to checking your documents and renewing your passport if necessary, you can visit travel.state.gov to see your passport's validity for your destination.
Blumenthal's office will be hosting Passport Day on Thursday from 12-7 p.m. at 90 State House Square in Hartford. Staff will assist individuals with renewals, first-time passport applications, and TSA PreCheck enrollment.

Norfolk International Airport breaks record for most travelers in a single day

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After being named the best domestic airport in the country, Norfolk International Airport is now celebrating another win: the largest-ever number of travelers to go through the airport in a single day. On Sunday, July 6, 11,522 people got on a plane at Norfolk International. A majority of those travelers were returning home after spending their Fourth of July holiday in Hampton Roads. President and CEO of the Norfolk Airport Authority Mark Perryman said that around this time last year the airport didn't record more than 10,000 in a single day. 'Success breeds success at the end of the day,' Perryman said. 'So, we're growing because the region's growing. There's a reason why we have airlines wanting to serve more destinations here. It's because there's a demand here.' The increase in the number of travelers is leading to physical growth of the airport. Perryman outlined to 10 On Your Side all of the projects in the works, which include extending the departures terminal, a new state-of-the-art rental car facility, a new federal inspection services building, a hotel and a new hanger for private aircrafts. 'We are at the beginning of, a probably about a five-year window of major overhaul of this airport.' Perryman said. 'You're going to see a lot of 'pardon our dust' please be patient with us.' Old runway removal makes way for simpler route to Norfolk International Airport

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — You may remember the first time you took Robin Hood Road into Norfolk International Airport. You may also remember feeling like you made a wrong turn somewhere and ended up behind the Perryman, president and CEO of the Norfolk Airport Authority, said the wrap-around road was designed before the airport grew to the size it is now. 'This roadway system was really designed for traffic back in the 70s,' Perryman said. 'So, not a lot has happened to the roads since then.' Now, changes are coming. A new road will cut straight through the site of an inactive runway. Norfolk International Airport breaks record for most travelers in a single day 'So, we're going to close that [runway], bring Robin Hood Road straight across and it will end up in this brand new intersection that we're building,' Perryman said. 'It'll be a normal four-way intersection that has all the lights and signalization. It will have a brand new 'Welcome to ORF' sign.' The project is being done with $18 million from the federal government through begins this week and is planned to be finished in one year.'It'll be a little complicated and a little dicey during construction, Perryman said. 'We'll have maintenance of operations and turns and all that built into it.' The project does include the removal of some trees, but the team said it is working with the city's arborist to make sure Norfolk International maintains the beautiful foliage that it's known for.'We're not just going off and cutting trees, bare earth here,' Perryman said. 'We're doing it very methodically and with a lot of thought behind it.' ORF adds cozy seating, sanitizing wipes, and heartfelt notes to Mother's Rooms This is part of a major renovation effort at Norfolk International Airport. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. UNESCO Just Added New Destinations to Its World Heritage Sites—See the Full List

There are more global wonders to explore. From Denmark to Mozambique, UNESCO recently inscribed several new global heritage sites and extended the status for two more current sites. The group detailed the news in a series of Facebook posts. The latest additions to the popular tourist list including unique sites that may be unfamiliar to even the most frequent of travelers, like Møns Klint in Denmark, which features white chalk cliffs spilling into the Baltic Sea dating back 70 million years. Travelers can explore the site's natural beauty from both land and sea, enjoying the clear water or combing the beach for ancient fossils. 'Hike along the cliffs, spot peregrine falcons, or simply take in the spectacular views," VisitDenmark's tourism website wrote about the newly-recognized World Heritage site. "It's the kind of place that Danes move to and never leave.' Another new update to the World Heritage list was the Peruaçu River Canyon in Minas Gerais, Brazil, a stunning canyon with natural flora as well as impressive rock formations. The canyon is also popular among hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, and was recognized as one of the best trails in the region by AllTrails. UNESCO also designated the Minoan Palatial Centres in Crete as a World Heritage site. The famed ruins date as far back as 1900 BC, according to the group. In the Caribbean, Jamaica's Port Royal town—a historical district dating back to the 17th century—was also added to the list. The port was home to many famous pirates back in the day, and faced a series of extreme weather and other natural disasters. "Much of the old city, described in the 17th century as the 'wickedest city in the west', lies underwater beside the town," Jamaica's tourism website shared. Sierra Leone received its first World Heritage site recognition thanks to the forests of the Gola-Tiwai Complex, which are home to "more than 1,000 plant species (113 endemic), 55 mammals (19 globally threatened), and key species like the African Forest Elephant and Pygmy Hippopotamus," according to UNESCO. The final additions included the coastal region of Guinea-Bissau—also in West Africa—and Mount Kumgang in North Korea. UNESCO's goal is to promote "quality education and lifelong learning for all to build a better future." The group regularly updates and maintains its World Heritage list. Beyond the new additions, popular locations on the list include the Taj Mahal, Yosemite National Park, and the Pyramid Fields in Egypt. In total, there are 1,248 designated World Heritage sites.
