Mayor calls for unity among MBKS members to better serve city
KUCHING (April 28): All members of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), including its heads of departments (HODs) and councillors, have been called to continue working together as a unified team to serve the city more effectively.
In pointing this out, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng highlighted the importance for the council to have strong teamwork and mutual support among those within its community.
'As we move forward, I encourage everyone—the councillors, the HODs, and all staff—to continue working together as one strong, united team.
'Let us support each other, communicate openly and collaborate effectively for the betterment of our city and the people we serve,' he said at MBKS Aidilfitri open house today.
At the event, Wee also welcomed MBKS' newly-elected secretary Ita Ling, and expressed his gratitude to former acting secretary Wong Ming Kong for his hard work and contributions.
The Aidilfitri gathering featured various stalls offering traditional festive delicacies, and also fun contests such as 'Best Decorative Stall' and 'Best Dressed Awards'.

Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said construction work for the RM1.5 million project will begin today (July 21), with a targeted completion by January 20, 2026. 'This project marks another milestone in our commitment to creating a healthier, more liveable, and more inclusive urban environment for all residents, under our strategic urban rejuvenation masterplan known as 'Towards a Healthy City'. 'Under this masterplan, our aim is to ensure that all generations, young and old can enjoy an improved quality of life through better infrastructure, stronger community engagement, and connected public spaces,' he told a press conference at the park. 'However, in listening to the feedback of our community, we realise that there is a pressing need for a sheltered and functional facility within the park to support various activities, events, and gatherings, especially during inclement weather or under the hot sun. 'This led us to propose the construction of a community centre and a roofed terrace right here in Hui Sing Park.' He said the community centre will provide a safe and inclusive space for the elderly, children and families. 'The building will serve as a venue for community programmes, health and wellness activities, workshops, and cultural events. 'The adjacent roofed terrace will offer a shaded area that allows people to continue using the park comfortably, regardless of the weather,' he said. 'There will be some inconvenience during the construction period, but the park users can continue to exercise here.' He also said that with the new community centre in place, the jogging route will be extended as well. 'We will not shorten the existing route that people have been using for their exercise. In fact, this route will be longer,' he said. The public is also encouraged to share feedback during the project's implementation. 'We will put up contact numbers so that the public can reach out with constructive suggestions. 'We will follow up because this facility is being built for everyone,' he said, adding that MBKS hopes to see the project completed ahead of schedule to avoid delays during the year-end rainy season. 'In designing the centre, we tried our best not to cut down any trees. Only one small palm tree will be removed. The rest of the trees will be retained where larger trees will be incorporated within the courtyard of the centre,' he explained. He said that among the proposed components for the centre include a small, air-conditioned library for children, a semi-outdoor sheltered space for the elderly, a covered area for Tai Chi practitioners, as well as a dedicate space for table tennis where the table has already been included in the project cost. Wee later handed over the project to contractor Cottage Holdings Sdn Bhd which was received on behalf by the company representative Amanda Ting. Kuching councils to host inaugural 722 Walk as symbol of unity for Sarawak Day

The 722 Walk, taking place on July 22, will bring together the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) for the first time ever in a joint event. The three-kilometre walk, which kicks off at 6am from the MBKS headquarters and ends at the Kuching Waterfront, is expected to draw over 1,000 participants, including council staff and the public. Kuching South Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, the key driver behind the initiative, described the event as more than a walk – it is 'a celebration of history, health, heritage, hope, and unity.' 'We understand the main state-level celebration is in Miri this year, but that does not stop us from holding our own event here in Kuching. 'This walk is our way of celebrating Sarawak Day in a way that is inclusive, healthy, and full of Sarawakian spirit,' he told a press conference at MBKS headquarters today. Inspired by a casual discussion among council leaders, the 722 Walk was born out of a shared desire to engage the public meaningfully on a day that commemorates Sarawak's self-government on July 22, 1963. To foster greater youth engagement, Child Councils from all three local authorities will be joining the walk, promoting patriotism among the younger generation. No registration is required, and participants are encouraged to wear red, black, and yellow or Sarawak batik to reflect the occasion's spirit. The walk will also highlight Kuching's vibrant multiculturalism and long-standing harmony, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) of promoting good health and well-being. City Jogger Club (CJC) has come on board as a co-organiser, assisting with logistics and providing volunteers as marshals – a gesture hailed by Wee as 'a model for civic responsibility'. Also present at the press conference, Kuching North Datuk Bandar, Dato Hilmy Othman, expressed his support for the joint effort, crediting Wee's patriotic vision for uniting the councils. 'Celebrating this day together sends a powerful message about unity, not just among government agencies but also among the people of Kuching. 'This initiative promotes a healthy lifestyle while also reminding us of our shared past and future,' said Hilmy, adding that DBKU looks forward to hosting the 722 Walk next year as part of a rotating schedule. MPP Chairman Tan Kai echoed similar sentiments, stressing that local councils are best positioned to bring Sarawakians together at the grassroots level. He encouraged overseas Sarawakians to mark the day in their own way, 'even if it's just by flying the Sarawak flag or cooking Sarawak laksa.' Wee: Stray dog tests positive for rabies in Tubau, Bintulu

He said the case came to light following a dog bite incident and the animal was later tested positive for rabies. Speaking at his 'Shall WEE Talk' Facebook live session yesterday, he appealed to everyone to remain vigilant and be particularly alert in areas where stray dogs roam freely. Wee said the city council is concerned about stray dogs roaming in public areas where young children mingle. He noted that they recently engaged with young members of the MBKS Children's Council, who brought up their fear of stray dogs. In light of this, he said the city council, together with its Children's Council, will deliberate on the matter and propose solutions to enhance awareness and public safety. According to the Mayor, the young members of the Children's Council have offered meaningful feedback, and his council will act upon their perspectives and address the challenges they face. He added that the young members have contributed to the city's ongoing efforts to fight rabies. On a separate issue, Wee said the city council is working on a flood mitigation plan for Jalan Mendu under the 12th Malaysia Plan. He added that a consultant has been engaged to carry out a study to address the frequent flash floods in the area. Earlier this week, heavy rainfall caused flash floods along Jalan Mendu, resulting in traffic chaos. Wee said flash floods sometimes happened due to illegal property extensions carried out by some homeowners, leading to infrastructure and drainage issues Given this, he urged the community to report illegal renovation cases by sharing photos and the location with the city council for enforcement and solutions. When a complaint is received, he said the council will check if design plans were submitted and put a stop to the works if necessary.
