KUCHING (July 6): Sarawak has recorded a rabies case involving a stray dog in Sungai Sebutin, Tubau, Bintulu this week, said Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
He said the case came to light following a dog bite incident and the animal was later tested positive for rabies.
Speaking at his 'Shall WEE Talk' Facebook live session yesterday, he appealed to everyone to remain vigilant and be particularly alert in areas where stray dogs roam freely.
Wee said the city council is concerned about stray dogs roaming in public areas where young children mingle.
He noted that they recently engaged with young members of the MBKS Children's Council, who brought up their fear of stray dogs.
In light of this, he said the city council, together with its Children's Council, will deliberate on the matter and propose solutions to enhance awareness and public safety.
According to the Mayor, the young members of the Children's Council have offered meaningful feedback, and his council will act upon their perspectives and address the challenges they face.
He added that the young members have contributed to the city's ongoing efforts to fight rabies.
On a separate issue, Wee said the city council is working on a flood mitigation plan for Jalan Mendu under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
He added that a consultant has been engaged to carry out a study to address the frequent flash floods in the area.
Earlier this week, heavy rainfall caused flash floods along Jalan Mendu, resulting in traffic chaos.
Wee said flash floods sometimes happened due to illegal property extensions carried out by some homeowners, leading to infrastructure and drainage issues
Given this, he urged the community to report illegal renovation cases by sharing photos and the location with the city council for enforcement and solutions.
When a complaint is received, he said the council will check if design plans were submitted and put a stop to the works if necessary.
He hoped that the public would continue to render their cooperation and support the city council's efforts in enhancing Kuching's environment and people's living conditions. Bintulu lead rabies Tubau wee hong seng

Tank collides into traffic light during Singapore's National Day Parade preview show

A video of the accident posted to Facebook page SGRV shows the traffic light standing slightly askew after the incident. - Photo: Screengrab from SGRV/Facebook SINGAPORE: Mobile columns - where a country's military hardware such as tanks are displayed during celebrations such as Singapore's National Day Parade (NDP) - often attract attention, awe and admiration from members of the public. However, one tank garnered more attention than its operators bargained for during a National Day Parade (NDP) preview show on Saturday (July 5). While making a right turn outside of Parliament House and the Supreme Court, the tank - identified by netizens as a leopard tank - ended up bumping into a nearby traffic light. A video of the accident posted to Facebook page SGRV shows the traffic light standing slightly askew after the incident. The video, which was posted at about 9.55pm on July 5, had garnered 472,000 views within 10 hours. It also amassed 2,400 likes and 738 comments as of 9am on July 6. The NDP, which marks Singapore's 60 years as an independent nation, will take place at the Padang on Aug 9. Many netizens saw the collision as a minor hiccup and called for others to be more empathetic towards the tank driver. Facebook user Chen WL commented: 'Guys, have a little heart. He's probably a NSF (full-time national serviceman) earning minimum allowance... Let's hope the unit or the RSM (regimental sergeant major) won't tekan the poor kid too much...' Another user, Low Beng Keat, said that accidents such as these are why rehearsals, previews, and dry runs are performed. 'If there is a mistake, get up and move on, learn and be mindful the next time. No big deal, don't take it too hard on our soldiers guarding and defending on our homeland,' he wrote. Several commenters said they believed the accident arose due to a mechanical failure. One such person was Lucas Por, who said he was a former technician for such tanks. '(The) driver even has trouble pivoting while stationery, which should be an easy feat,' he said. User Hizdiebidi Bidi agreed, noting it was 'Impossible (that the) driver suddenly forgot how to turn'. Another user, Wo King Tre, said it looked to be a 'steering linage failure'. 'It can happen sometimes. Nothing much the tank operator can do about it. Just have to limp the tank to safe spot for the technicians to perform recovery,' he said. Many netizens praised the tank operator for reacting swiftly, noting that the accident could have had catastrophic consequences if the tank was not stopped in time. As user Janice Lau put it: 'Tank-ful no one is hurt'. The Straits Times has contacted the Ministry of Defence and Land Transport Authority for more information. - The Straits Times/ANN

Family of UPSI crash victim Nurly Sahirah receives RM7,500 aid

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of the late Nurly Sahirah Azman, one of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who died in a bus crash in Gerik, Perak, last month, has received RM7,500 in contribution from several agencies. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar handed over the contribution to her family during a visit to their home in Kampung Gong Pasir, Kerandang, Jertih, yesterday to help ease their burden. In his Facebook post today, Mohd Na'im said the contribution comprised RM2,000 from Yayasan Taqwa (Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council – MAIWP), RM1,000 from the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation, RM1,100 from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia-Yayasan Waqaf Malaysia (Jakim-YWM) Musa'adah Fund and RM400 from the MAIWP Zakat Collection Centre. "I also presented a food basket worth RM150 from the Jakim-YWM Musa'adah Fund. "May Allah place her soul among the righteous and grant fortitude to the family she leaves behind," he said. Mohd Na'im described the moment Nurly Sahirah was found clutching the Quran to her chest at the time of her passing as deeply moving and a reflection of her strong devotion to the word of God. Nurly Sahirah, 23, was one of the 15 UPSI students who died on the morning of June 9 when a chartered bus from Jertih heading to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned following a collision with a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway. The crash injured 33 others, including the bus driver and co-driver, as well as the other vehicle's driver and three passengers.
