Church hosts Education Sunday to honour graduates
This year was no exception, as the church once again celebrated academic excellence with a heartfelt and uplifting ceremony on June 15.
The service was graced by the presence of the Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr Reginah Mhaule, who joined graduates, learners, and church leaders in recognising the accomplishments of the Class of 2024.
The event was hosted by Bishop Thabiso Mashiloane and Lady Bishop L. Mashiloane, with Dr Ncha skillfully leading the programme. Elder T.J. Sekolanyane opened the service by reflecting on its purpose: to commend graduates who have overcome challenges on their educational journey, and to inspire current learners to remain committed to their studies.
Throughout the event, a variety of speakers delivered motivational messages to the congregation.
Among them were Dr Mpho Ramoliki and Thandiwe Pino, who shared powerful words of encouragement.
Dr Ramoliki urged learners to be discerning in their choice of role models, stating: 'If you are so thirsty that you want to drink from every cup presented to you, you will be poisoned. Don't make slay queens your role models.'
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Mhaule congratulated the graduates and emphasised that learning does not stop after matric.
She encouraged young people to embrace education as a lifelong journey and to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset to help combat unemployment and contribute positively to their communities.
The celebration concluded with a symbolic gift handover to the graduates by Professor Segalo, Bishop and Lady Bishop Mashiloane, and Dr Mhaule, a gesture recognising the graduates' hard work, resilience, and dedication.

‘Pawsome' way to spend Mandela Day
RICHARDS Bay SPCA is calling on animal lovers to 'pawse' their day and spend 67 minutes with the animals in their care this Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July. '67 minutes may not seem like much, but for an animal, it could be the most love and attention they've ever received in their life,' said SPCA chairperson Engela Hamman. ALSO READ: Calling all handymen and women! The 67 minutes on Mandela Day represent the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for justice, equality and freedom. Why not unleash some 'ulti-mutt' kindness on the voiceless animals who wait patiently for their 'furever' homes? 'Bring a chair, blanket or cushion and spend your 67 minutes with the animals in our kennels. Bring a toy, a treat, or just your time and love – spoil them with cuddles, care, and kindness. 'Let's fill every kennel with a human heart this Mandela Day and give hope to those still waiting for their forever homes,' said Hamman. Whether it's belly rubs, gentle words or tasty treats, your time can bring 'pawsitivity' to an animal waiting to be loved. Don't have the ZO app? Kokosi Catholic Church uplifts community through Youth and Father's Day celebrations
The St Augustine Catholic Church in Kokosi went the extra mile to make Youth Month and other recent events memorable for its community. According to active church member Anastasia Lefalatsa, young people from the church helped organise a heartwarming Father's Day surprise. Each father in the congregation received a special meal and a blue ribbon as a token of appreciation. 'We held this as a surprise to make the fathers feel that they are special and valued,' Lefalatsa said. It was the first time the church hosted such an event. In addition to this, Father Don Jastin travelled to Wedela on Youth Day to host a workshop for young people from both Kokosi and Wedela. Critical issues such as unemployment, drug abuse, and gangsterism were discussed. Looking ahead, the church plans to continue its community outreach with a special initiative for Mandela Day.
