India's Narredu to spearhead Asia's charge in historic Shergar Cup revamp at Ascot
Suraj Narredu, one of India's most decorated jockeys, is set to make history once again — this time as captain of the newly formed Asia Team in the 2025 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot Racecourse.
The multiple-time Indian champion, whose name has long been synonymous with excellence on the subcontinent's racing scene, will be making his Shergar Cup debut in this year's edition — and not just as a participant, but as the man leading the charge for the first-ever Asia Team.
The team makes its debut this year, replacing the long-running Ladies Team, as the Shergar Cup embraces a new chapter that celebrates international diversity and gender equality.
Joining Narredu in Team Asia's red silks are Japanese sensation Ryusei Sakai — currently one of the most recognisable names in global racing thanks to his partnership with the world's highest-rated horse, Forever Young — and fellow countryman Mirai Iwata, the 2023 World All-Star Jockeys champion.
Crowning Moment
For Narredu, the appointment as captain is more than symbolic. It's a culmination of an extraordinary career that has seen him amass over 2,400 wins worldwide, including 54 Group 1 victories — an astonishing 36 of which were Derby titles.
He was just 25 when he became the fastest Indian jockey to reach 1,000 career wins, and his success has taken him far beyond the Indian turf, with stints in Dubai, Australia, Ireland, France, the United States, Malaysia, Mauritius, and Macau.
'This is more than just a race meeting for me,' said Narredu. 'To represent Asia, and to lead a team with such incredible talent like Ryusei and Mirai, is truly an honour. The Shergar Cup has always been a standout event, and this new format only raises the bar.'
The 2025 edition of the Shergar Cup, taking place on Saturday, August 9, will once again be staged at the iconic Ascot Racecourse and will feature six high-calibre handicap races with a total prize pool of £500,000, along with £25,000 in stable bonuses.
Racing Meets Regional Rivalry
In a format that breaks away from the conventional mould of racing, jockeys will compete in Ryder Cup-style teams based on geographical regions, with points accumulated across the races to determine the overall champions.
Dubai Duty Free's title sponsorship of the event is also continued for a 20th year.
"Back in 2009, my uncle Malesh Narredu made history as the first Indian jockey to ride in the prestigious Shergar Cup, representing the Rest of the World team,' said Suraj. 'I had the incredible opportunity to travel with him and witness it firsthand."
Narredu's appointment is also a landmark moment for Indian racing on the world stage. While horses from the sub-continent have yet to make consistent inroads internationally, Narredu's selection as captain is a nod to the country's deep pool of riding talent and its growing influence in the global racing circuit.
Other star names set to feature include Hollie Doyle, the trailblazing and history-making British jockey who will lead the Great Britain & Ireland team, and Mauritian ace Karis Teetan, captain of the Rest of the World team. The European team will be led by ten-time Swedish champion Per-Anders Gråberg, returning to Ascot for his first Shergar Cup appearance since 2018.
New Format Hailed
Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot, hailed the evolution of the event: 'We feel now is the time to move away from a ladies-only team, and this new evolution of the format keeps the event fresh.'
'We're pleased to have secured top talent from across the world to compete at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup with at least eight different countries set to be represented already.
'We feel now is the time to move away from a ladies-only team, and this new evolution of the format keeps the event fresh.'
With the inclusion of a concert and party following the races the Shergar Cup continues to blend top-tier sport with entertainment, drawing a diverse and enthusiastic crowd.
Riding for a Legacy
But for Narredu, it's not just the spotlight that matters — it's the colours he'll wear and the legacy he's creating.
'Wearing the red silks of Asia, riding alongside two world-class jockeys, and captaining this team at a venue as iconic as Ascot… it's a dream,' he said. 'I'll be riding not just for myself, but for Indian racing and for everyone who has supported my journey.'
As the Shergar Cup embraces its boldest reinvention yet, it seems only fitting that a trailblazer like Narredu takes centre stage.

Trosmic Sports announces ‘Flux Halo'—A 'next-generation arena to redefine live entertainment in the GCC
Trosmic Sports has officially announced conceptual plans for Flux Halo, a next-generation indoor stadium that will transform the live entertainment and sports landscape across the GCC. Supported by multi-billion-dollar equity from Japan, Flux Halo is positioned to be one of the most technologically advanced and culturally relevant arenas in the world. Mr. Bhardwaj, Mentor and Conceptual Founder of Trosmic Sports, stated, 'The core of Trosmic Sports and Flux Halo is a bold belief that sport is our global common language and the arena will be the most eloquent representation of that language. Every moment of illuminated time in Flux Halo will represent not only athletics but also humanity's endless journey to seek a path beyond the known. GCC, Flux Halo is already being designated a flagship venue that could be the equivalent of proximity to some of the world's most recognized sites, such as the O2 Arena in London and Madison Square Garden in New York City. The stadium is scheduled to open around the middle of 2030, with a capacity of up to 20,000 spectators in a fully reconfigurable bowl. It will accommodate football, basketball, concert performances, esports tournaments, and large-scale conventions with a 200,000 m² column-free interior and a 75,000 m² retractable tensile roof. It has chief creative director Kotetsu Yamamoto describe the Möbius-inspired ribbon form of the arena itself as "an architectural representation of perpetual motion," with systems that allow the configuration of the exterior with a programmable LED mesh of 50,000 m² for immersive digital light shows and real-time branding. Drawing from the crown of Athena, which represents wisdom and guardianship of the athlete, the concept embodies the venue's desire to grow with its cultural influence. George Kunihiro, Director of Architecture & Planning, also mentioned that the arena will operate with net-zero energy using solar-harvesting LEDs, AI-enabled climate control, and recycled rainwater utilization. "This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to play a role in the next great venue of our time," said Vaibhav Sharma, Chairman, Trosmic Sports. The project is expected to bring 10 million-plus visitors a year and have a diversified revenue stream that should ensure a robust long-term return. Equity is still open to regional and international investors (albeit the best ones are likely gone), being led by Ankur Tandon and Rohit Kumar on execution and growth strategy. In late June, a Japanese delegation led by Yamamoto and Kunihiro will visit the UAE to get private briefings and visit sites in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh from 29th June to 7th July. Messi's Miami and PSG progress to set up CWC reunion, Porto and Al Ahly play draw
Inter Miami's Lionel Messi faces a tantalising reunion with former club Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup last 16 after both sides on Monday progressed to the knockout phase. Miami drew 2-2 with Palmeiras to go through second in Group A, after the Brazilian side fought back from two goals down to seal top spot. They now face an all-Brazil clash against Botafogo, who lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid but progressed from Group B in second at the expense of the Spaniards. Champions of Europe PSG won the group with a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders, paving the way for the clash with Messi and surprise package Miami. Goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez had Miami on course for a second victory in the tournament after their shock win over Porto. But Palmeiras struck twice in the last 10 minutes at Hard Rock Stadium through Paulinho and Mauricio to ensure they went through. Suarez, Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Miami coach Javier Mascherano will also face their former coach Luis Enrique, who guided them to the treble when in charge at Barcelona in 2015. 'We're talking about the champions of Europe. We know many of their players and their coach, who I was lucky enough to have coach me, and I've always said he is the best in the world,' said Alba. 'I will connect with good friends there but once the game starts, we will compete, try to beat them, and why can't we do it? This is football.' Mascherano said Miami's progress had elevated Major League Soccer. 'It's a historic night for MLS, because we are into the best 16 teams in the world. All of the MLS has to be proud of Inter Miami,' he said. For Messi, who celebrated his 38th birthday on Tuesday, the tie in Atlanta will see him face his former club PSG for the first time since leaving them to join Miami in 2023. Abel Ferreira, the Palmeiras head coach, was highly critical of his team's opening 45 minutes but pleased with their reaction. 'I told them at half-time that it was impossible to do worse than what we did in the first half. We were unable to contain our opponents or put pressure on them up front. But our spirit of fighting until the end was particularly important in the second half, and we were rewarded for that,' he said. Portuguese side Porto and Egypt's Al Ahly were eliminated after a thrilling 4-4 draw which was not enough for either team to overhaul Palmeiras or Miami. 'I'm very sad, very very sad, I feel like we should have scored five or six goals, the opportunity was there to win the game,' said Palestine international Abou Ali, who netted a hat-trick for Al Ahly. The Egyptian side took the lead after 15 minutes as Abou Ali slotted a low effort past Claudio Ramos. Porto quickly hit back through 18-year-old starlet Rodrigo Mora, who drove through the Al Ahly defence and rounded the goalkeeper. Abou Ali restored his team's lead with a penalty just before half-time, but a stunning Williams Gomes strike pulled Porto level in the 50th minute. Abou Ali completed his hat-trick little over a minute later with a towering header. With the game lurching end-to-end Porto responded in kind two minutes later as Samu Aghehowa nodded in for 3-3. Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane curled home brilliantly from range to give Al Ahly the lead but they could not hold on. With a minute remaining, Pepe pulled Porto level for the fourth time to save his team's blushes on the night, although elimination in the group stage was a shock for the Portuguese side. European champions PSG bounced back from their surprise defeat by Botafogo with a comfortable win in Seattle. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi scored either side of half-time as the Ligue 1 champions advanced as group winners because of Botafogo's late defeat to Atletico Madrid in Pasadena. 'It wasn't easy because the pitch was very different to what we are used to in Europe so we couldn't play with the fluidity that we like, but we adapted,' said PSG coach Enrique. PSG top scorer Ousmane Dembele played no part for a third game running after travelling to the tournament with an injury. Agence France-Presse
