
East Lothian family 'taken off plane' as EasyJet apologise for last minute cancellation
An East Lothian family have spoken of their dissapointment after being taken off an EasyJet flight moments before their long-awaited summer holiday.
Emma Drummond, along with her partner and 12-year-old son, were due to fly to Amsterdam on Sunday evening. After boarding the plane, they were instructed to get off with their flight then cancelled.
While they've been refunded for the flight, Emma and her family have now lost out on their holiday as well as the money spent on their hotel in Amsterdam and the ticket price for the Anne Frank House - both of which were not refundable. EasyJet have explained the last minute cancellation, telling Edinburgh Live that it was down to "Air Traffic Control restrictions as a result of adverse weather conditions" which resulted in the crew "reaching their legally regulated operating hours".
The Drummond family, from Musselburgh, would have had to spend over £400 on any other available flights to make their holiday happen, and would have been left with only one full day - so decided to cancel the whole trip. Emma says she's 'spent so much money to see her 12-year-old disappointed'.
Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Emma said: "We were booked in to the 6.30pm flight to Amsterdam on July 6.
"We boarded the flight, but were then told to disembark 20 minutes later. Now we have lost of hotel money and tickets we booked for Anne Frank's house, which I can't get refunded on.

"We were only going for four days, so now the whole thing has been cancelled. We couldn't move our flight, we were only being offered a refund or vouchers.
"We did check for any other available flights however it would have cost us another £143 each (there was 3 of us so £429) and we wouldn't arrive until 10pm on Monday. Which still means our Anne Frank tickets have gone to waste.
"Also we're due to fly home Wednesday, so would have one full day. That's only on the assumption the flight then would have left with no issues.
"Hotel messaged at 7am and cancelled our room as we hadn't checked in. So we would also need to find another room at my own cost on top of all the flight stuff.

"It's just cost me so much money to see my 12-year-old so disappointed."
An EasyJet spokesperson said: "Flight EZY3303 from Edinburgh to Amsterdam on 6 July was cancelled due to Air Traffic Control restrictions as a result of adverse weather conditions, which resulted in the crew reaching their legally regulated operating hours.
"We did all we could to minimise the impact of the weather disruption on our customers, providing options to rebook or obtain a refund, and have processed a refund for the Drummond family as requested.
"We will be reaching out to the Drummond family to offer support, including providing the documentation needed to make a claim with their insurance provider. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and while this was outside of our control, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused."

Flight cancellations threaten to ruin holidays as strikes planned for European hotspot
British tourists flying to and from Italy could see their travel plans disrupted due to mass airport transport strikes due to take place on Thursday July 10. easyJet pilots and cabin crew based in Italy are due to strike for 24 hours on July 10. The budget airline has bases at Milan Malpensa, Naples International and Venice Marco Polo while it also flies to many other Italian destinations including Palermo, Rome and Pisa. Baggage handlers at several major Italian airports, including Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa and Venice Marco Polo are also due to strike on the same day. Airport staff at Cagliari Elmas in Sardinia and Naples Capodichino are also set to take part in protests on July 10. The strikes could cause flights delays for passengers travelling to and from Italy. Under Italian law, some flights are protected from strike action but others could be cancelled. Flights that depart between 6 and 9 am or between 6 and 9pm are considered protected by law. Passengers could also face long waits for baggage at key airports or lengthy queues at check-in. Strike action could also cause knock-on effects and delays for passengers travelling on July 11. And in Palermo, travellers are set to face another day of chaos as staff at the Sicilian capital's airport are planning a walk-out on Friday July 11. The 24 hour action in Palermo could cause flight delays and cancellations for passengers visiting the top holiday hotspot. Passengers affected may be entitled to compensation but airlines aren't required to provide it if the strikes were out of their control. Rip-off airlines are treating holidaymakers like cash cows
With the summer holidays approaching, it is of great comfort to know that the travel industry is poised to ensure the annual family getaway lives long in the memory. Sadly, it is unlikely to be for the right reasons. Squeezing consumers became rife during the cost of living crisis as businesses cynically sought to maintain profit margins at the expense of struggling households. Yet, this cynical view of the consumer – as little more than a cash cow to be milked at every possible opportunity – continues to be taken to ever greater extremes by the budget airlines of the world. These companies have become the most ruthless rip-off merchants of all. Take the latest little ploy from these bastions of low-cost travel. Not content with fleecing us at every possible turn already, the budget airlines and the baggage handlers appear to have formed a sinister pact to actively catch out unsuspecting families as they're waiting to board the plane. Incredibly, staff at the ground handling giant Swissport are being awarded cash bonuses for every easyJet passenger with oversized luggage they manage to stop at the gate. Dubbed 'the easyJet gate bag revenue incentive', Swissport employees working at seven airports in Belfast, Birmingham, Glasgow, Jersey, Liverpool and Newcastle, receive a £1.20 bonus 'for every gate bag taken'. First reported by The Sunday Times, one poor family had all five of their bags seized for being too big to fit beneath a plane seat. The intrusion cost them £240, yet they insist their luggage not only was within the stipulated free hand baggage size but also fitted inside one of those menacing measurement boxes that lurk by the gate. In response, Swissport said it was 'highly professional' while easyJet said its bag policies were 'well understood'. Another aviation company, DHL Supply Chain, has a similar remuneration package for identifying non-compliant easyJet bags at Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester airports, so that's just about every corner of the country covered, making it almost impossible to escape this rotten practice. It is worth pointing out that this cynical escapade hasn't been deployed because of some sudden commercial crisis. Easyjet's annual revenue amounted to £9bn last year. Swissport meanwhile generated €3.7bn (£3.2bn). As for DHL, it is an €84bn corporate monster, and its supply chain operations racked up nearly €18bn of turnover at the last count.
