Mere reveals dressing room slap from Mambush Mudau
Mere (41) retired from professional football last year after 22 years. He played for teams like Sundowns, Platinum Stars and Moroka Swallows.
During the Prime Sport with Mahlatse podcast, the former Sundowns star shared stories about his early days with the team, revealing how he and Lerato Chabangu often drank until midnight in Tembisa.
'I was staying with Lerato Chabangu in Midrand, so we got accommodation and it's a three-bedroom flat. Lerato Chabangu is from Tembisa, I'm from Bloemfontein, so no one was going to tell Ace 'sleep my boy' because we are almost the same age,' Mere said.
'What used to happen was that Ace would go to Tembisa. He would call me and ask us to wash our cars in Tembisa. Once we got there, everybody knew us and we would relax and drink six, 12 or 18 beers before going back home around midnight.'
Mere said he and Chabangu would party until late, even though they had training the next morning.
'It started becoming a habit and we were often intoxicated at training, but the team was winning and we were getting away with it,' he said.
'Mambush (Mudau) started realising that we were coming to training not in a good state and he called me in, yoh,' Mere added. 'At some point, we got a hiding from Mambush in the dressing room. Yoh, the grootman slapped us.
'You know what he did to Charles Motlohi. It wasn't a mistake, the grootman can clap. He believed in us and he (Mudau wanted to help us before the situation got to the coaches and management,' Mere said.

Kaizer Chiefs lose momentum in transfer race
Kaizer Chiefs fans are growing increasingly impatient as the club continues to fall behind in the transfer market. With several targets slipping away and rivals strengthening, supporters are calling for bold action. This week, Kaizer Chiefs were snubbed again — this time by Oswin Appollis, who joined Orlando Pirates despite long-standing interest from Naturena. The winger was viewed as a key piece in Chiefs' rebuild, but the club's inability to close the deal has once again left fans frustrated. Flavio Silva remains Kaizer Chiefs' only confirmed attacking arrival. While the Portuguese striker has talent, he arrives with little fanfare and few guarantees. With the squad still thin in attack, supporters are demanding more signings before the window closes. Michael Olunga and Fiston Mayele were both linked with the club, but those pursuits appear to have fizzled out due to high price tags. Internal sources claim the technical team is exploring other options, but progress has been slow. Jessica Motaung offered a statement to ease concerns: 'We are working tirelessly to finalise the right players. These decisions are not easy, but we want to do what's best for Kaizer Chiefs long-term.' While that may offer some reassurance, time is running out. The Toyota Cup is fast approaching, and Kaizer Chiefs have yet to announce any marquee names. With Pirates already making big moves, fans fear the team may once again fall short of expectations. The club's vision of returning to domestic and continental dominance remains intact, but execution has been lacking. The next few weeks could define Kaizer Chiefs' season — for better or worse. What Kaizer Chiefs can expect from their 'new playmaker'
Kaizer Chiefs new signing Ethan Chislett is decribed as a technically gifted midfielder with an ability to score goals. His former coach at Port Vale, Andy Crosby has opened up on the attributes of the Durban-born midfielder who joined Amakhosi a few weeks ago. The 26-year-old is one of the six new Amakhosi signings ahead of the new season. 'His technical ability to receive in tight spaces, his ability to play the last pass (assist) and his ability to score,' Crosby told Soccer Laduma . 'He progressed throughout his first season, grew more comfortable in his new club and with his teammates and style of play,' Chislett has scored 13 goals in 68 league appearances for The Valiants across two seasons, in two different league levels. It remains to be seen if the Durban-born midfielder will outperform other new Kaizer Chiefs signings. This past weekend, the Soweto giants announced the signing of former SuperSport United midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu. Before that, the club revealed that former Orlando Pirates duo of Thabiso Monyane and Paseko Mako were part of the Khosi family. Other new signings include Flavio Silva and Nkanyiso Shinga. Kaizer Chiefs are currently in the Netherlands for their pre-season training and will play in several friendly matches next week. Kaizer Chiefs fall short on strikers, but have exciting prospects
Kaizer Chiefs are looking like they will fall short on priority targets Michael Olunda and Fiston Mayele. Both are in-form and have hefty price-tags. Although this is sad news, the silver lining is that AmaKhosi have a wealth of academy talent to test for next season. Who doesn't love a hometown hero. 'There are a number of strikers that the club [Kaizer Chiefs] have been looking at apart from Mayele and Olunga. One of them is Flavio Silva who the team has already announced and the others are Etiosa Ighodaro and youngster Naledi Hlongwane who has been promoted from the DDC side. So the search for strikers continues even though one has already been signed,' Soccer Laduma said. Another source reaffirmed the sentinement, saying, 'Apart from Naledi Hlongwane the club was looking at signing two more experienced strikers. Apparently now that they have signed Flavio Silva, they are still looking at signing one more to bolster the team's striking department. They are believed to be working hard on that.' Kaizer Chiefs fans have expressed their concerning for the lack of signings, perhaps instigated by Orlando Pirates flurry of arrivals. Last week Jessica Motaung released a statement regarding the club's transfer business, saying, 'Great to hear the players come back. I see they have maintained their fitness. That's what I love. I see they are focused and ready to come and face the challenges that they have.' 'Certainly, we are working on the intakes for the new season and I know that the technical team, as well as the sporting department, is working closely to make sure that they are looking at different types of players and signing the players for the next season.' 'Hopefully, we will see some of those signings at the Toyota Cup and in the pre-season. But also, the window is open for a period of time, so we are not closed off and saying the signings we make now are fast and final,' she added. 'Certainly, there is a lot of work being done to make sure that we realise the vision, which is to continue ascending locally and on the African continent in terms of our rightful place and where we should be as Kaizer Chiefs.'
