India ranks 4th in income equality globally, says World Bank report
India's progress in achieving this balance is the result of sustained economic growth paired with targeted social policies focused on reducing poverty and expanding financial access, the report said.
What is Gini index?
The Gini Index measures the distribution of income, wealth, or consumption across a population. A score of 0 represents perfect equality, while 100 reflects absolute inequality — where one individual holds all the resources. A lower score signifies a more equitable society. With a Gini score of 25.5, India falls into the 'moderately low' inequality bracket (25–30) and is on the threshold of joining the 'low inequality' group.
Comparison with other nations
India's Gini Index not only places it ahead of China (35.7) and the United States (41.8), but also makes it more equal than every G7 and G20 country. The list of 'moderately low' inequality countries includes European nations like Iceland, Norway, Finland, and Belgium, as well as the UAE and Poland. In total, only 30 countries fall into this category globally.
India's current score marks a notable improvement from 28.8 in 2011, indicating a steady trend toward more equitable distribution of resources over the past decade.
Poverty reduction fuelling equality
India's improved equality metrics are closely tied to a significant reduction in poverty. According to the World Bank's Spring 2025 Poverty and Equity Brief, 171 million Indians exited extreme poverty over the past 10 years. The share of people living on less than $2.15 per day — the previous global benchmark for extreme poverty — fell from 16.2 per cent in 2011-12 to just 2.3 per cent in 2022-23. Using the revised threshold of $3.00 per day, India's poverty rate is estimated at 5.3 per cent.
This success has been supported by government initiatives designed to reach the most vulnerable sections of society.
Key government schemes driving inclusion
Several flagship schemes have contributed to improving financial access, welfare delivery, and entrepreneurship among marginalised groups:
-PM Jan Dhan Yojana: Over 556.9 million bank accounts opened, expanding financial inclusion
-Aadhaar: More than 1,420 million digital identities issued, streamlining benefits delivery
-Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): ₹3.48 trillion in cumulative savings, reducing leakages in welfare schemes
-Ayushman Bharat: Health cover of ₹5 lakh per family, with over 413.4 million cards issued and 32,000 empanelled hospitals. The scheme includes a version for senior citizens aged over 70 years.

France urges tariff barriers to stop China from killing industry
French finance minister Eric Lombard said Europe must shore up its tariff barriers to counter Chinese imports that risk harming the continent's industrial economy. Europe has already taken action on steel and automobiles, but rules must be changed to allow the wider use of measures against imports from China, Lombard said. "In the world we are in today, we must protect our industry," Lombard said Saturday at a conference in Aix-en-Provence, France. "We must do it on all industrial segments, otherwise the Chinese policy that consists of having a production capacity of more than 50% global market share in each sector will kill our industry." China announced anti-dumping duties on European brandy on Friday while exempting major cognac makers that agreed to minimum price levels. The action followed the EU's decision in 2024 to levy duties as high as 45% on Chinese-made electric vehicles.

We negotiate keeping national interest in mind, not under deadlines: Piyush Goyal
New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that India does not negotiate under deadlines and does so from a position of strength. Goyal said the government holds discussions keeping national interests in mind and attacked the Congress, saying this is 'not weak India under UPA which would make agreements which were not in the national interest'. His remarks came hours after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a dig at the Modi government over Goyal's earlier remarks in which he had said that India does not enter trade deals based on deadline or time pressure. 'Piyush Goyal can beat his chest all he wants, mark my words, Modi will meekly bow to the Trump tariff deadline,' Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X, attaching a news report about the Union Minister's remarks. 'India does not negotiate under deadlines. We negotiate keeping national interests in mind, and national interest is paramount in all our work across the world. We have entered into free trade agreements after the Modi government came in with Mauritius, with the United Arab Emirates, with Australia, with the four-nation EFTA grouping - Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland,' Goyal told reporters. 'Now with UK last month. And we continue to work with other developed nations like the EU bloc of 27 European countries, with the United States, with Oman, with Peru, with Chile. Today, India negotiates from a position of strength. We are self-confident. We can compete with anybody in the world. This is not a weak India under Congress and UPA which would negotiate and make agreements which were not in national interest,' he added. Goyal also visited Aerospace Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Devanahalli in Karnataka and expressed confidence that India will become a preferred supplier for defence and aerospace given the great relationships it is creating with many other developed countries and said a lot of design and innovation is happening through global capability centres in the country. The Minister also expressed confidence that apart from design and innovation, more and more patens will be filed in India. 'I have absolutely no doubt that in the years to come, particularly given the great relationships that India is creating with many other developed countries, India will become a preferred supplier for defence and aerospace. Already, a lot of design and innovation is happening through global capability centres in India. Now, we will not only design and innovate in India, we will patent in India, produce in India and hopefully become globally relevant partner in supply chains. So, I am truly very optimistic about the potential of this sector,' he said. Asked about scope of collaboration between Indian startups and global aerospace companies, the minister said that SEZ doesn't necessarily have any role in that but there is scope for a bridge or a connection between startups in India and internationally in the space of defence and aerospace. 'I will ask Startup India to see how we can use the services of all these wonderful companies and their connections to see if we can connect the two,' he said. Asked about India's journey towards global aerospace hub, he said this defence and aerospace zone will be the beginning of a path-breaking journey. 'Starting from HAL and now with all these new units coming up, all the other Plants that I see around here, I am quite sure that this defence and aerospace zone will just be the beginning of a path-breaking journey in this field. I have absolutely no doubt that in the years to come, particularly given the great relationships that India is creating with many other developed countries, India will become a preferred supplier for defence and aerospace. Already a lot of design and innovation is happening through global capability centres in India,' he said. (ANI)

Aadhaar-based biometric and facial recognition attendance system launched for pourakarmikas in Hubballi-Dharwad
Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has launched a new Aadhaar-based biometric and facial recognition attendance system to boost the performance of pourakarmikas. The corporation introduced this system to enhance the efficiency of over 2,500 pourakarmikas and auto tipper drivers working across 82 wards, while improving the cleanliness standards of the city. The attendance system incorporates both biometric and facial recognition capabilities. Henceforth, the officials of HDMC will take attendance thrice a day. Pourakarmikas will give attendance in the morning while reporting to duty at 6am, and then again at 10am and 2pm. The govt of India's Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially sanctioned this advanced system. It ensures precise attendance tracking, timely wage disbursement, and enhanced administrative transparency. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali said the system offers several advantages, including accurate attendance monitoring, reduced tardiness, punctual payment of wages to civil servants, elimination of paper-based attendance records, and improved administration with a user-friendly interface featuring Kannada voice guidance. Geo-fencing enables location-based attendance verification. "The corporation aims to enhance civic worker recognition, improve city cleanliness, and strengthen administrative efficiency through this technological advancement," he added. The HDMC's IT department awarded the contract for implementing this biometric and facial recognition system to Swasthi Private Limited, a start-up founded by Vijay Bhajantri and Siddalinga Latti. According to sources, this initiative aligns with the digital governance reforms being implemented across urban local bodies. The system is expected to benefit both the corporation and the workers by establishing transparent work documentation. HDMC plans to gradually expand the system's capabilities to include real-time location tracking and work completion verification. The executive engineer of SWM, Santosh Kumar Yarangali, explained that the system effectively tracks working hours. The technology allows supervisors to efficiently oversee workforce allocation across zones, leading to enhanced accountability and operational efficiency. The new attendance system has been implemented in zones 10 and 11, with zone 12 scheduled for implementation shortly, encompassing a total of 27 wards. He further stated that the biometric and facial recognition attendance system would be extended to all wards within two months. Additionally, he confirmed that 90 attendance points have already been identified and geo-tagged.
