Smoke – Season 1 Episode 4 Recap & Review

The Review Geek11-07-2025

Episode 4 of Smoke begins with David Gudsen giving a presentation about arson. All the other officers are in attendance, including Calderone who watches from the back. It's a rather unconventional speech, especially when Dave mentions how chaos beats order every time and starts a couple of small fires.
After, Calderone heads off to visit her brother, Benji. He's organizing underground cockfighting and he apologizes for lashing out at her. He's off the booze now (two whole days!) and the pair get along well.
Being here does give Michelle another idea though and that comes from the bird tags. She believes they can place the tags in bags and stack them in numerical order, have a clerk write down the numbers while working, and when they find a tag from the arsonist, trace it back to the CCTV footage and count the number of customers. It's pretty ingenious and Englehart also goes for it too.
Meanwhile, things between Emmett and Dave are still awkward. Ashley tries to stick up for her partner but Emmett is convinced that he's two-faced. Gudsen is avoiding heading home though after their big fight, and instead winds up drinking with Calderone in the office.
As they talk, they discuss the different paths in life people are given and the changing fortunes therein. Dave opens up here, admitting that when he was 15 his mum just disappeared. They called the police and had a search party out but she wound up skipping town and head off with a substitute teacher because she wanted a fresh start.
Instead of feeling sorry for himself, Gudsen decided to pretend she was dead and moved on. Now, Gudsen won't be in town for the weekend either, given he's got an arson conference in Leighton
When he does head home and speaks to Emmett in the morning, he tries to apologize, in a roundabout way. Ashley throws a lifeline out, suggesting he pick up his stepson up from practice after school. Unfortunately, Gudsen loses track of time and he shows up at the office, where she bumps into Michelle.
As for Calderone, she finds old business cards in her desk belonging to an agent called Ezra Esposito. This is the man Dave was working with before she showed up. The files have been sealed and there's no getting in right now.
Michelle offers to give Emmett a lift home, which is probably just as well given it gives her a crucial clue. Emmett tells her that 'nobody knows Dave Gudsen' and he also has no knowledge of this Esposito character. Naturally, Michelle decides to butter Englehart up and find out about Esposito.
Apparently he shot himself in the foot and he sued the department. To try and keep this quiet, they gave him the entire retirement plan. However, he became convinced that Gudsen was their arsonist.
It doesn't help that inside the house, Dave and Ashley are in the middle of a fight. Dave thinks Emmett needs to 'man up' and it causes Ashley to snap. She lashes out at his mediocre, pedestrian book and leaves him stunned.
Meanwhile, Freddy shows up to see Brenda and wants her to change his hair. He no longer wants to be seen, so Brenda encourages him to come back after 5. He doesn't, instead cutting his own hair back home, before setting up a whole bunch of jugs, ready to hit the town.
It's Gudsen who heads out first though, meeting a woman at the store who winds up flirting with him. He looks like he's about to set fire to the chips again but this time things are different. Gudsen still has the desire to burn so he introduces this woman to the world of 'streaking'. He ties her down, drops oil on her stomach and sets fire to it.
He promises this won't leave any scars, and after putting it out, wants him to burn her again. He nods, and the episode ends.
The Episode Review
Although Smoke's latest episode is the slowest and doesn't have much in the way of plot development, what it does showcase is rather important. Not only are we seeing more of Michelle's ingenuity and her ability to dive head-first into this case, but also the extent of Dave Gudsen's mental issues.
Whether his sociopathic tendencies stem from his mother leaving and snapping something deep inside him, or if this occurred later on through the pressures of life, it's clear that he's wound tighter than a two dollar watch.
We know that he's going to snap at some point, but so too is Freddy it seems. With all those jugs in his closet, wrapped in black bags no less, it'll be interesting to see who snaps first. Either way, the second half of this series looks like it's going to pick up in a big way.

Sublime singer suffers personal tragedy, almost cancels performance

Sublime singer Jakob Nowell nearly didn't take to the stage during Vans Warped Tour in Long Beach on Saturday following a heartbreaking loss. The music artist, 30, emotionally revealed to the audience during the set that he had to put his beloved hairless cat Creature down before the band's performance. 'Creature the cat was my best f***ing friend,' he expressed as the other members prepared to play the next song. Jakob then admitted, 'I almost didn't want to play today but I thought to myself, "I don't know what any of you guys are going through out there."' After commenting on the size of the crowd outside, he added, 'I know a lot of people look forward to a set like this man. So, good to be up here playing my father's music with my best friends and family.' Jakob is notably the son of late singer Bradley Nowell - who had been the frontman of Sublime until his tragic passing in 1996 due to a heroin overdose at the age of 28. Jakob's hairless sphynx cat had often appeared on his main Instagram page, along with another hairless cat named Fluffy. Some images show Creature cuddling up on his lap, or wearing adorable outfits for special occasions. He has also mentioned his beloved pet during interviews, including his conversation with Rooster Magazine last year. At one point, Jakob was asked if Sublime has plans to have another mascot. Before his father's death, Bradley's dalmatian named Lou Dog had been the band's official mascot. 'Oh no because I have my band cat, Creature the hairless sphynx cat. He's pink. He's chubby. He's my mascot for Jakob's Castle,' the singer explained, referencing to his other band. Sublime had been formed in 1988 with Bradley as the frontman along with Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh. However, the ska punk band disbanded after Bradley's death. In 2009, Eric and Bud came together wanting to reform the group - which they eventually did with Romeo Ramirez. They called the group Sublime With Romeo due to not having the rights to use the original name. But in 2023, Jakob became the lead singer of the band alongside Eric and Bud, officially reforming Sublime. The following year, Sublime With Romeo disbanded after Eric announced his exit. Jakob has followed in his late father's musical footsteps aside from currently being the lead singer of Sublime - which has previously dropped tracks such as What I Got and Wrong Way. He formed his own group called LAW, which he left in 2021 and is also the frontman of his other band Jakob's Castle. Jakob is the son of Bradley and mom Troy Dendekker. The pair had begun dating in the 90s and married just one week before the singer's death during a ceremony in Las Vegas. During an interview with L.A. Magazine, Jakob got candid about his childhood, getting sober and his relationship with his mother. 'I grew up with a crazy tumultuous home life,' he explained. 'When I got sober, I didn't speak with [my parents] for years. 'There was just a lot of white-trash chaos. Definitely no silver spoon status. It was insanity.' He has since reconciled with his mother Troy as well as the man who raised him since he was six named Keith. Jakob also reflected on deciding to reform Sublime and explained to the outlet that he wants 'to bring attention to the very powerful California subculture that [he] created, and then use it as a tool to help people.' While talking to last year, the singer further opened up about his father - who passed away less than a year after he was born. 'I think that he was a man who was widely loved and respected by his friends. He was a human being like anybody else. He was varied. He had good days and bad days.' Jakob continued, 'But I think we have to just take everybody's character based on their actions and what they produced and created in the world. 'And I know that his music helped a lot of people, and I just feel so grateful to get to be involved with and get to interface with it like that.' The performer also added, 'It's been really nice getting to put together the gestalt to who he was 'cause I never met him personally... 'But all his different friends and family and the fans, they each have a little piece of who he was, and he seemed to be a very multifaceted and interesting man.' Jakob also discussed being compared to his later father and said, 'When I'm up there on stage, I always tell fans I'm not my dad. They're like, "He doesn't play the guitar the same or sing the same or do this." 'It's almost like I'm not him, dude; I'm a different guy. My larynx just happens to be biologically similar, so sometimes it sounds similar.' 'But I will play them genuinely and I'll have fun doing it, and that's all I can promise,' the singer expressed. Ahead of the Sublime's set during the Vans Warped Tour on Saturday, the band dropped their new single titled Ensenada on July 17.

Forensic psychologist compares Kohberger to Bundy

Bryan Kohberger was driven by an extreme desire for control and notoriety rather than a blind hatred of women, forensic psychologist Dr Gary Brucato has told a new Mail podcast. Speaking to journalist and host Laura Collins, the violent crime expert saw shades of infamous serial killer Ted Bundy in Kohberger's murder of four college students in their rental home in Moscow, Idaho. Dr Brucato contrasted Kohberger's 'evil' psychosexual fantasies with the extreme misogyny that drove infamous incel murderer Elliot Rodger. Kohberger, 30, was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary for the November 2022 killings but controversially accepted a plea deal in July 2025 to avoid the death penalty. Asked whether the victims' families' heartfelt statements at the sentencing would have any effect on Kohberger, Dr Brucato said he feared that for killers like him, such public grief becomes part of their fantasy. 'The families' approach was to try and get under his skin,' Dr Brucato said. 'But we must think about the kind of person this is, and I am afraid to say, he was like an automaton during those statements. 'Like a calculating machine – I wondered while he was sitting there he wasn't reliving in his mind what he had done, fantasising.' Brucato went on to describe Kohberger as a 'textbook serial killer' whose motivations, like Ted Bundy's, centred on control interwoven with sexual desire. Both killers were educated and superficially charming, the forensic psychologist observed, using their intelligence to carefully plan attacks on young women driven by fantasies of domination rather than obvious rage. Kohberger's interest in Bundy was well-documented - court documents reveal he had undertaken several Google searches on the serial killer before the murders took place. 'Control is really what this story is all about', Dr Brucato argued. 'Everything, even including this plea deal, seems to be about control. That's precisely why we feel so dissatisfied. 'Here's somebody who was arbitrating who lives and who dies, and ultimately managed to live himself, that's depressing. 'Kohberger is quite easy to figure out. His motives, as demonstrated in what was on the ground, are fairly classic. 'There are clues that this was psychosexual. Kohberger was viewing deeply disturbing pornography – and he clearly idolised sexually motivated serial killers. 'The greatest clue was that he purchased the knife months before there was even a victim selected. 'That means you have a fantasy, then you go out like a casting agent to find a person you can cast in your fantasy. 'A representative of the group he felt rejected by. Attractive young women – he homed in on a specific victim who was representative of that whole group.' Brucato said that the lack of personal relationship between Kohberger and his victims is particularly reminiscent of Bundy. 'A serial killer doesn't want a direct connection with his victim', the forensic psychologist said. 'There's a story about Ted Bundy that he once picked up a potential victim and she started talking too much about her life, her identity – that he dumped her because it was too difficult to project onto her.' Some media outlets initially compared Kohberger to incel killer Elliot Rodger, the 22-year-old who murdered six people in California in 2014 out of hatred toward women who rejected him. But asked by host Collins whether he sees validity in the comparison, Dr Brucato said Kohberger was more 'imitating Bundy' and doesn't meet the 'definition of an incel'. 'Bundy is much more of what Kohberger aspired to be', he told the podcast. 'The in-control person who knows how to use empathy to manipulate people. 'What you see in Kohberger was more that, when women would get near him, he wouldn't know what to do. 'If he ever got in an intimate moment, he would shut the woman down or condescend them or say something weird. 'He told a woman he went on a date with that he would like to tickle her, that she had great birthing hips. 'That's very different to an incel. An incel doesn't even get the opportunity.'
