A mother has fallen victim to a heartless scam after callers used AI to pose as her daughter.
When Sharon Brightwell picked up the phone on July 9 she heard her own daughter tearfully tell her she had been in a car accident.
'There is nobody that could convince me that it wasn't her,' Sharon said. 'I know my daughter's cry,' she told WFLA.
She listened to the caller tell her that she had hit a pregnant woman while texting and driving, and said her phone was confiscated by police.
Then the Florida woman heard a male voice who told her he was the lawyer that would represent her daughter.
He said the daughter was in custody and needed $23,000 to post bail.
Ms Brightwell said the man gave very detailed instructions, and warned her 'not to tell the bank what the money was for' because it would affect her daughter's credit score.
In a state of shock she followed the instructions, withdrew the money and placed it in a box as the man had requested.
Then a driver showed up to her house and collected the package.
This was not the end, and Ms Brightwell received another call telling her the unborn child had died in the womb as a result of the accident, and that the family would not sue if they were paid $46,000.
This is when Ms Brightwell's grandson intervened.
He arranged a phone call with Ms Brightwell's real daughter on the other line.
When Ms Brightwell heard her daughter's voice she 'screamed' and 'broke down'.
Her daughter had been fine the whole time.
The family suspects the scammers used videos from the daughter's social media to accurately replicate her voice in a cruel and emotionally manipulative scam.
They have reported the matter to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and urge other families to take precautions against this sophisticated high-tech scam.
Ms Brightwell's daughter has launched a GoFundMe page to cover the cost of the $23,000.
On the page, she wrote, that the AI cloned voice sounded 'exactly like her'.
'After you hear your child in distress, all logic is out the window. Nothing would have convinced her that wasn't me.'

Horrific rail crossing crash near Albany ignites calls for improved level crossing safety

Level crossing safety has been thrust into the spotlight after a mother of three was killed in a crash between a four-wheel-drive and a grain train at a rail crossing near Albany. Cailee Mansell, 29, died on Wednesday, July 16, after the Mitsubishi Triton her family were driving in was hit by a CBH Group train at a a level crossing in Redmond. Ms Mansell, who was a passenger, suffered critical injuries and died at the scene. Her heartbroken family have launched a fundraiser to support her husband and children left behind. In a post on fundraising site GoFundMe, organisers said Ms Mansell was 'a light upon this earth' who was taken far too soon. 'Her sudden passing has left an unimaginable void in the hearts of all who knew her,' the post read. 'She leaves behind her heartbroken husband, Haydn and their three young children, who now face life without their mum's warmth, love and guidance.' The donations — which amounted to more than $92,000 on Tuesday — will go to funeral and memorial expenses, child care and schooling needs, and daily living costs. Redmond residents living near the rail line have joined the calls for improved level crossings, with Carly Pateman-Baker — who lives 50m from the train line — telling ABC that 'no one stops' at the crossing. 'To find out this has happened right at our doorstep . . . is pretty scary,' she said. 'Normal train lines either have warning lights . . . or a barrier that comes down before a train is close to the railway line.' WA currently has 960 public road level crossings on operational rail lines, about half of which are fitted with flashing lights or boom gates. A State Government review conducted in 2023 deemed 13 of the passive crossings on State roads should be upgraded with active controls, but Countryman understands the Redmond crossing falls under the City of Albany. The accident occurred just weeks after a trio of WA families marked the 25-year anniversary of a fatal level crossing accident at Jennacubbine in the Wheatbelt. There were renewed calls for improved level crossing safety and mandatory lighting on trains. Each of these families — the Jensen, Broad and Smith families — are part of a national campaign called Improve Level Crossing Safety and Train Lighting, which includes nine other families from across Australia. Campaign spokeswoman Lara Jensen said the families' hearts 'broke all over again' when they heard about the Redmond crash — for Ms Mansell's family, as well as the two train drivers and emergency personnel involved. 'Australia's Rail Safety National Law states that the regulator, Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator must facilitate safe rail operations, yet in the last four years we have seen ONRSR ignore three train lighting reports it commissioned that all found additional lighting improves train visibility,' she said. 'It is deeply concerning that the rail industry is still not being made to comply with the findings of its own research. 'Rail companies operate businesses that create serious risks and so they have a responsibility to mitigate these risks by doing all they can to ensure their locomotives and rolling stock are clearly illuminated at all times for rural road users that interact with them at more than 18,000 regional crossings without lights or boom gates around Australia. 'Improving level crossings safety requires multiple actions, and fitting auxiliary lighting to locomotives and rolling stock (hazard, side, front and beacon lighting) is one such affordable corrective action that would improve safety and reduce preventable crashes and fatalities at regional railway crossings.' Central Wheatbelt MP Lachlan Hunter also doubled down on his calls for flashing lights to be made mandatory on trains. 'People will argue that this accident happened during the day,' he said. 'I know many farmers in my electorate who have farm machinery and they have to have lighting on their header or tractor as they move from farm-to-farm. This is not something I think is unreasonable. 'If you look at this crossing, it is a peculiar crossing . . . there is just one stop sign..' A statement from freight train operator Aurizon on Thursday confirmed the fatal collision, saying it, along with CBH, would assist police with the investigation. 'Tragically, a passenger in the vehicle lost her life in the incident and we extend our condolences to her family and friends,' the statement read. 'This incident will be felt deeply by the local community, including our train drivers and employees who live and work locally.' A CBH Group spokesman said the farmer-owned co-operative was 'deeply saddened'. 'We are deeply saddened to hear of the fatality at Redmond,' he said. 'Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased, and everyone affected by this tragedy. 'CBH and our rail services provider, Aurizon, are assisting the relevant authorities with their investigation.' It is understood the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will conduct an independent investigation, while major crash is also investigating the accident. Ms Mansell's death is one of 120 so far this year on WA roads, in a horror toll putting the State on track for its worst 12 months for fatalities in more than a decade.

Caribbean Guard shares more details about Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death

The Caribbean Guard has shared more details about the circumstances surrounding Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death. The 54-year-old actor drowned after being caught in a current over the weekend during a family trip to Costa Rica, with the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) declaring his cause of death as "asphyxiation by submersion'. A new Facebook post from the Caribbean Guard confirmed there was no lifeguard on duty at the time of the accident as they had "allocated resources" elsewhere as a result of other "recent water incidents" at two nearby beaches. The post said: 'We deeply regret the passing of Malcom - Jamal Warner, in Playa Grande. He was swept away by a strong hangover current and died by drowning. It was all very fast and even though there were people on the beach who came in to rescue him, they didn't arrive in time. He was pulled underwater with no vital signs and despite having been provided with CPR maneuvers on the beach, his resuscitation was unsuccessful. 'Playa Grande is one of our most challenging beaches. It's a beach known by local surfers and there are signs (in English and Spanish) that warn of the danger of death by drowning. It's a beach that the Caribbean Guard has patrolled for the last few years. [Not] this Sunday though. Due to the recent water incidents on Playa black we have allocated resources there and on Chiquita, another beach, for its currents. 'From Caribbean Guard, association of volunteer lifeguards, we appeal to the President of the Nation, the national government, the Municipality of Talamanca and the entire Caribbean community, to continue joining efforts to minimize this problem, which is sadly rising ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. 'We do everything within our power. We've saved numerous lives in recent years, and if Caribbean Guard didn't exist, drownings would count by the dozens. We do our part to minimize risks but if we don't have government help, clear public policies and strong support from local entrepreneurs, this will keep happening [sic].' According to PEOPLE, a second man was also caught in the same current as Warner and is in critical condition.

Andres Alejandro Santana Hernandez: Boy mauled to death by crocodiles as his family watches in horror

WARNING: GRAPHIC DETAILS A boy has died after being brutally attacked by crocodiles in front of his family. Andres Alejandro Santana Hernandez, 14, was walking with his family by a waterway in Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, when he fell into the water on July 18. Tragically, before his parents could intervene, crocodiles hidden by the swamp waters launched at him and dragged him beneath the surface. In a vicious attack, they pulled the boy further from the water's edge and began tearing into his body. Andres' family watched in horror as the boy was brutally killed. The Mirror reported that it is believed the boy was attacked by a group of Morelet's crocodiles, also known as the Mexican or Belize crocodile, which can grow up to three metres long and typically weigh a staggering 200kg. The species is known for being particularly vicious, and once they reach maturity, they will prey on nearly any animal that enters their territory. Police divers have begun to search the canal for the boy's remains, but it is unclear if they have managed to recover his body. Warnings have been issued, and authorities have urged people to avoid visiting the area, citing the unpredictability of the crocodiles. Since news of the tragedy, tributes have been flowing for Andres, who was actively involved in the local community. He was an altar boy at and a part of a community marching band run by the Cortazar Fire Department. Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Church, where Andres served, has paid tribute to the boy. 'With deep sorrow, but with our hope placed in our Lord Jesus Christ, who has Risen and is the Lord of life, I earnestly ask you to join in prayer for the eternal rest of Andres Alejandro Santana Hernandez, altar server of the main parish, who has been called to the house of the Eternal Father,' a parish statement read. The public have taken to social media to express their shock and pain at the sudden loss of Andres. 'He was a Monaguillo (altar boy), a child full of faith, tenderness and hope,' one Facebook user wrote. 'The departure of Andrés Alejandro shows the importance of every glance, every hug, every moment of protection. May their memory be a beacon to keep those we love most safe,' another user wrote.
