Emmanuel Acho on why LeBron James and Luka Doncic can't win the NBA championship together
However, there are still doubts about how great the Lakers can be, mainly because of their shortcomings on the defensive end. They lack two-way players, and Doncic and LeBron James aren't great defenders for various reasons. Neither is Austin Reaves, who is their third-best player.
On Fox Sports 1's "The Facility," former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho said that James needs to leave the Lakers after this coming season if they are to win the NBA championship because he and Doncic are weak defenders.
"This has to be LeBron's last year if the Lakers want to win anything of significance," Acho said. "You can't win a championship right now — or, at least, it would be very hard to win with Luka and LeBron on the court at the same time because neither of them at this point are defensive juggernauts.
"... I don't see the coexistence of LeBron and Luka and championships," Acho said.
The Lakers were a strong defensive team for a period of time this past season, especially in February as Doncic got himself integrated with them. But after the All-Star break, they ranked just 17th in defensive rating, and in the playoffs, they were 12th in that category among the 16th teams that made it there.
Los Angeles will likely be a very strong offensive team, if not an offensive juggernaut, this coming season. But it will have to overcome plenty defensively to get the job done in the postseason.

NBA will take a harder look at expansion, Commissioner Silver says
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The NBA may finally be one step closer on the long road to expansion. Commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday that the league has been tasked by team owners to study the issue more formally, which would be the first official move in a long process toward adding franchises. 'A lot of analysis still needs to be done and nothing has been predetermined,' Silver said. The decision to take a harder look at expansion wasn't totally unexpected, since the notion of adding clubs has been a talking point for several years. Cities like Las Vegas and Seattle — long perceived to be the front-runners should the NBA decide to expand past its current 30-team footprint — will surely continue to push to be the eventual picks. And Silver himself has said previously that he expects expansion will happen at some point. The next board of governors meeting will likely take place sometime in September. Expansion has long been a complicated issue, since it'll mean that the current owners will have decided to sell equity in a league that is on a financial roll right now. 'For every team you add, you're diluting the economics of the current league,' Silver said. A new series of media rights deals worth $76 billion kicks in for this coming season, franchise values across the league have soared and the two most title-laden franchises in the NBA, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, clubs that have combined for about half of the titles handed out in league history, are in the process of being sold with a combined valuation of at least $16.1 billion. The Celtics are being sold to private equity mogul Bill Chisholm with a valuation of at least $6.1 billion, which was a record until the Buss family agreed to sell the Lakers to businessman Mark Walter — also the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers — with a valuation of $10 billion. The league has added seven franchises since 1988, but none since 2004. There has been several instances of rebranding and relocating since — most notably, the Seattle SuperSonics moving to Oklahoma City in 2008 and becoming the Thunder — but the league has been at 30 teams for the past two decades. ___ AP NBA:

Pete Alonso crushes three-run homer for first career All-Star Game blast
Pete Alonso hadn't ever homered in the All-Star Game — until Tuesday. The Mets slugger crushed a three-run homer the opposite way off Royals lefty Kris Bubic on Tuesday night in Atlanta to give the National League a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Alonso, a five-time All-Star, smacked a 1-0 pitch 367 feet over the high wall in right at Truist Park. 2025 MLB All-Star Mic'ed Up Moments: Kershaw's 'Cheese' and PCA's 'Oh Shoot!'
From Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw to Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, the 2025 MLB All-Star Game gave us plenty of one-liners and fun in-the-moment insights from the game's top stars. Here were some of the best mic'ed up moments from Atlanta: 'I'm Gonna Throw Some Cheese Real Quick' Kershaw had some fun tipping his pitches during his half-inning of work, including his showdown with Home Run Derby champion Cal Raleigh. Luckily for Kershaw, Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker saved him with a nice catch on the Big Dumper's line drive. Kershaw to Smoltz: 'I Don't Throw a Cutter!' Kershaw kept up the friendly banter with FOX Sports analyst John Smoltz by asking him which pitch to throw next. Kershaw politely informed his fellow pitching legend that he doesn't throw a cutter before sitting down Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a signature curve. Like Father, Like Son? 'Your Flow is Fantastic' Former MLB star Jack Wilson was one proud papa as he saw his son, Athletics rookie Jacob Wilson, make his All-Star debut at shortstop. The elder Wilson, who was an All-Star himself in 2004, seemed more complimentary of his son's hairdo than anything else. 'I Got It! Oh Shoot, You're Right There!' Good thing that Cubs duo Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker have developed a good relationship in the Wrigley Field outfield. That helped PCA in Atlanta when both players were going for Jacob Wilson's flyball. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
