Walsall hold off Chesterfield to seal play-off final trip

Rhyl Journal16-05-2025
Holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg, the Saddlers defended resolutely and effectively sealed progress nine minutes from time through Charlie Lakin's close-range finish.
Armando Dobra netted a stoppage-time Chesterfield consolation but Levi Amantchi responded soon after to ensure Walsall won on the night as well as on aggregate.
Amantchi's goal sparked the first of two pitch invasions, the second coming after the final whistle, as Walsall secured a Wembley date with Notts County or AFC Wimbledon on May 26.
Walsall – who blew a 12-point lead at the top of League Two to end up in the play-offs – started swiftly, seeking the early goal that would kill the tie.
Jamie Jellis raced clear in from the right early on but his shot from a tight angle was blocked by visiting keeper Ryan Boot.
Only four times in the near 40-year history of the EFL play-offs had an away side overturned a two-goal first-leg deficit to reach the final.
Chesterfield, though, began to threaten as Dobra tested Saddlers keeper Tommy Simkin with a fierce drive from 25 yards.
Bim Pepple threatened several times to break clear for the Spireites but was well marshalled by the home defence and when he did find space on the edge of the box, he dragged well wide.
Just before the break, Pepple had another chance when he broke free of his marker in the area but could only bobble a harmless scuffed shot that was easily collected by Simkin.
Chesterfield had the ball in the net after the interval as Jenson Metcalfe drilled into the corner from 20 yards but the whistle had long gone for a handball by the midfielder in the build-up.
Walsall should have wrapped matters up with 17 minutes left as George Hall sprinted clear to square for Amantchi but, with only Boot to beat, the substitute's finish was too close to the keeper.
But Lakin made no such mistake on 81 minutes, bundling home fellow substitute Albert Adomah's cross from a couple of yards out to put the tie's outcome beyond doubt.
Chesterfield gamely attempted a late fightback as Kyle McFadzean's shot was well blocked by Harry Williams and Ryan Colclough's strike was straight at Simkin.
After Amantchi and Taylor Allen both dragged shots inches wide for Walsall, the visitors did claim a 94th-minute consolation when Dobra steered home from a clever Will Grigg touch.
But Walsall had the last word a minute later with Adomah the provider again, his deep cross nodded into an empty net by Amantchi at the far post.

Stephen Robinson salutes Richard King as St Mirren defender marks full debut with a goal

The Northern Irishman was delighted to see how well the Jamaican international handled his first start as Annan Athletic were thrashed 8-2 in the Premier Sports Cup. Stephen Robinson praised new boy Richard King's performance after he 'cruised' through the thumping 8-2 win over Annan Athletic. ‌ And the St Mirren boss has already given an insight into how much he rates the Jamaican international as he has pointed him out for penalty duty when needed. ‌ King was handed the chance to impress the black-and-white army after the manager gave him his full home debut in this Premier Sports Cup clash. ‌ The centre-back, who signed a two-year deal from Jamaican Premier League outfit Cavalier, also got his first goal when he netted from the spot. Robinson will hope that, after a torrid time last season from 12 yards, King could be the answer to his problems in that area of the pitch. He said: 'I thought Richard looked like he cruised through the game. He still has to learn the speed and the physicality sometimes in Scottish football. We've got a Jamaican who only just finished playing two weeks ago so we're still trying to manage Richard through it. ‌ 'Everyone's at different levels, I'd say; different levels of form as well so it's important that we get everybody these minutes. Ultimately, we want to be ready for the first league game but also try and qualify for a cup as well. 'The boys were a little bit shocked when I said Kingy was on penalties but I've seen him take them for Jamaica, I've seen him take them for Cavalier, and he's very composed. If he's in the team, he may be able to take it.' It was a goalfest at the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday as the Buddies romped to success over the League Two part-timers to stay top of their section. ‌ A hat-trick from Mikael Mandron — his first in Scottish football and the first by a Buddie since Cody Cooke's treble against Dundee six years ago — was the headline display. Killian Phillips' double and goals from Jayden Richardson, Roland Idowu and King ensured a thrilling afternoon for the black-and-white army. It was also Saints' highest goalscoring game in the competition since the turn of the century and sets up a Group D decider against Ayr United next Sunday. ‌ And Robbo was pleased with what he saw as he admits his side are getting back to where he wants to be but knows there is still work to do. He said: 'We started incredibly well. Some of our play, some of our goals, some of our movement, some of our passing was fantastic. Then we took a foot off the gas and needed a wee kick in the backside for us to get going again, which we did. 'As I've said, in this competition, everyone expects you to turn up and score six or seven. We did, we scored a lot of goals. But it's never easy. People are organised and I have to give credit to Annan and Willie Gibson [player/manager].' ‌ Meanwhile, the Buddies have bolstered their defensive options by securing Tunmise Sobowale on a two-year deal from Sky Bet League Two side Swindon Town. The 26-year-old right wing-back – who can also play right centre-back – is the latest summer signing and Robbo says fans can expect him to be fast as he compares his pace to that of former striker Toyosi Olusanya. He said: 'Sobowale has electric pace, as quick as Toyosi. It gives real competition for Jayden but Jayden's done well since he came in. Wale will give us real energy, real pace down that side. There's a real fight for the position.' The Northern Irishman also touched on the imminent signing of Jalmaro Calvin from Cavalier , and hinted to another which is close. He added: 'If we get the Jalmaro through, which looks positive, it gives us another bit of pace, energy and excitement. Hopefully we're close to another one in the forward areas as well.'

Adam Forrester is poised to step in to help Hearts' right-back issues following an injury to the Norwegian Christian Borchgrevink. The 20-year-old youth academy graduate has watched all three Premier Sports Cup ties from the stand but is expected to play in at least one of the Edinburgh club's next two matches. Hearts face Dumbarton on Wednesday in their final Group E match and will be confident of gaining victory against League Two opponents. A win should also be sufficient to secure a seeding place for the Premier Sports Cup last-16 draw. However, Borchgrevink is expected to miss the match at Tynecastle Park as he recovers from a hamstring complaint. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He was substituted at half-time on Saturday evening as Hearts beat Stirling Albion 4-0 at Forthbank, medical staff advising not to take a risk with the tight muscle. Irishman Oisin McEntee moved from midfield to right-back for the second half as the Australian Calem Nieuwenhof came off the bench to play in midfield. Forrester will now get his chance by featuring in one or both of Hearts' next two games after making 34 senior appearances last season. The Dumbarton tie is followed by Craig Gordon's testimonial match against Sunderland in Gorgie this Saturday. The Tynecastle head coach Derek McInnes explained the situation to the Edinburgh News, stressing that players like Forrester are being left out simply because he is trying to manage a first-team squad of more than 30 players at the moment. 'Borchgrevink felt his hamstring tight. It wasn't even up for debate so we just got him off quickly,' said McInnes. 'We'll see how he is this week. We'll have a wee look at him but, thankfully, we've got other options there. We can obviously go to a back three, plus we've got Adam Forrester. It's my intention to play Adam in one of the next two games, anyway. 'We just felt that Borchgrevink needed to play at the end of the day [against Stirling]. We just wanted him to feel part of it and build his minutes up. We didn't put Adam on the bench because we thought we'd put Stephen Kingsley there since he needs minutes. We kind of hoped to get Stephen on during the game. Even picking a bench is difficult at the minute. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We've got Adam there to come in for right-back. I think Michael Steinwender could play there. Oisin can fill in there as well. Part of the reason that you have a look at Oisin at full-back is for the eventuality of the day. Borchevink, I think will miss the game on Wednesday, based on what I'm hearing, but he might have a chance for a Craig's testimonial game on Saturday.' Hearts transfers latest - Costa Rica winger back in Scotland after Gold Cup Costa Rican winger Kenneth Vargas was also in the stand at Forthbank after returning to Edinburgh from international duty at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. His fitness is being assessed by coaching staff as McInnes juggles his attacking options ahead of the new SPFL Premiership campaign. Steinwender and Musa Drammeh watched Saturday's game alongside Forrester, midfielder Aidan Denholm and the injured Beni Baningime. Denholm is expected to leave Hearts either on loan or in a permanent move before the transfer window closes. Livingston are pushing hard to take him to West Lothian, while Motherwell and Ross County have also shown an interest. Meanwhile, Hearts are hoping paperwork for incoming forwards Sabah Kerjota and Pierre Landry Kabore will be finalised in the next few days. Both players are in Edinburgh and have been attending recent Premier Sports Cup games as they await final visa documents to complete their transfers from Italy and Estonia respectively.
