Aston Martin's Vantage gets more power for a modest price increase

Auto Express6 days ago
Earlier this year, Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark told Auto Express the firm needed to 'focus its attention on customer retention and giving buyers reason to upgrade their cars'. First came the uprated DBX S – the company's most powerful SUV – and now it has launched its hardest, most focused sports car to date: the Aston Martin Vantage S. Following in the footsteps of the previous-generation V8 and V12 Vantage S models launched in 2011 and 2013 respectively, the new Vantage S is based on the recently updated second-generation car. It gains a modest uplift in power from 656bhp to 671bhp, but torque is unchanged at 800Nm.
The model gets a new throttle map, which Aston claims 'further enhances driver engagement and performance feel', plus there are additional changes to the powertrain calibration, with an optimised launch control system said to cut the 0-62mph sprint to 3.4 seconds – one-tenth faster than before. New suspension hardware also features, alongside revised engine mounts and control software to bring what Aston claims to be 'greater agility along with improvements in feel, driver engagement and composure'.
The rear subframe is now mounted directly to the body, instead of via rubber bushes, for claimed gains in 'directness and steering connection'. The suspension's camber, toe and caster settings are also said to sharpen responses and improve front-end grip. Aston says the Vantage S 'has a thrilling appetite for corners backed up by steadfast stability'. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
But while the firm's engineers wanted the S to display greater agility, they weren't prepared to sacrifice compliance or refinement. As such, you'll find reduced rear-spring stiffness for improved low-speed ride, plus a 10 per cent reduction in the stiffness of the transmission mounts. Advertisement - Article continues below
There's a handful of visual changes for Vantage S buyers to enjoy, too. At the front, there are new centrally-mounted bonnet vents available in gloss black or carbon fibre, designed to extract hot air from the engine. There are specific, hand-made S badges on the front wings, too, made from red glass enamel and either dark or bright chrome. Extra red detailing is also seen on the bespoke 21-inch Y-spoke wheels, hiding a set of contrasting bronze brake calipers.
To the rear, there's a full-width spoiler, which not only changes the car's look, but adds 44kg of downforce at top speed. Further updates underneath the car, including a new front airdam and venturi vanes, add an additional 67kg of downforce.
Inside, there's unique Alcantara and leather upholstery, with embroidered S logos comprising 2,500 individual stitches and over 16m of thread. The car also features carbon fibre trim inlays – a feature Aston claims offers 'a modest weight saving' while perfectly capturing 'the essence of S'.
On top of this, owners can specify a new, unique interior option package, bringing a choice of red or silver finishes to the knurled metal drive-mode controller, matching the dial to the car's seatbelts and stitching. A Sport interior package is also available, with different materials in both monotone and duotone colourways.
Despite apparently being available to order now, Aston has so far only offered an indicative on-the-road price of around £170,000 – around £5,000 more than the standard car. The Vantage S will make its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this week, with first deliveries expected before the end of the year.

Racing drivers prompt safety concerns on west Lancashire by-pass

Cars racing along a major road in Lancashire are prompting concerns from residents and local racing on the Rainford Road by-pass in Bickerstaff is happening mostly on Sunday nights during quieter hours, councillor Adrian Owens road, which straddles Lancashire and Merseyside, has a 60mph (96.5 km/h) limit and has been the scene of several serious accidents in the Constabulary has urged witnesses to report any sightings of speeding on the road. Owens said: "It's a relatively straight road, there are roundabouts so they have sections, they can time themselves, have races along those sections and that's what they've been doing."The councillor said residents had raised concerns about the issue and appealed for any drivers who want to race to do so safely at a dedicated track."Go to Oulton Park, go to one of the racetracks that we've got in the North West and do it safely and professionally on a proper racetrack," he Constabulary said: "We always take reports of speeding and anti-social driving seriously and will carry out speed checks and have patrols in areas where concerns are raised." Luxurious Hyundai Ioniq 9 is £18k cheaper than a Volvo EX90

The all-new Hyundai Ioniq 9 is now available to order with prices starting from £64,995, which means the ultra-futuristic, seven-seater family SUV undercuts its equally bold award-winning cousin – the Kia EV9 – by nearly £1,000. The entry-level Ioniq 9 costs £7,250 more than a top-of-the-range, plug-in hybrid Hyundai Santa Fe – its combustion-powered equivalent. Other seven-seater electric cars are also available for less, particularly the more compact Peugeot E-5008 that costs from under £49k and the funky Volkswagen LWB MPV that kicks off from under £60k. However, the Ioniq 9 also undercuts the seven-seat Volvo EX90 by an enormous £18,000, and as well as family-focused cars, it should also be considered as a rival to fellow flagship SUVs like the BMW iX and Polestar 3 that cost from £71k and £68k, respectively. Advertisement - Article continues below Every Ioniq 9 features a whopping 110kWh battery that can provide up to 385 miles of range, if you stick with the base 215bhp single-motor, rear-drive model that does 0-60mph in 9.4 seconds. Although, upgrading to the 303bhp or 421bp dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrains only drops the maximum range to 372 miles. The most potent version can sprint to 60mph in 5.2 seconds – which is even more impressive when you consider that particular model weighs more than 2.6 tonnes. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Like the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 beneath it, the Ioniq 9 features an 800-volt electrical architecture that allows it to charge at a maximum of 233kW. Find an ultra-rapid charging point capable of those speeds, a 10-80 per cent top up will only take 24 minutes. Recharging that massive battery from an 11kW home wallbox will take at least 10 hours. There are three trim levels to choose from: Premium, Ultimate and Calligraphy. Every model features a 12.3-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital driver's display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight-way adjustable driver's seat, three-zone climate control, heated front and middle-row seats, heated steering wheel, powered tailgate, energy-saving heat pump, smart cruise control with stop and go function, plus a vast array of driver-assistance tech. Advertisement - Article continues below Premium trim is only available with the 215bhp rear-drive powertrain, but upgrading to Ultimate spec (which costs an extra £8,500) adds the 303bhp dual-motor set-up, plus 20-inch alloys instead of the base 19-inch set, a panoramic glass roof, head-up display, active road noise cancelling technology, Bose sound system, heated and ventilated front and middle-row seats, power folding third-row seats, full leather upholstery and ambient lighting. Calligraphy trim costs £2,300 more than Ultimate, and builds on the already extensive kit list with Nappa leather upholstery, two-tone leather steering wheel, a UVC sterilisation tray, 21-inch rims and body-colour wheelarches. Customers need to upgrade to Calligraphy spec if they want either the 421bp dual-motor powertrain, which adds another £1,800 to the price tag. Or fancy the Ioniq 9 with six seats, rather than the standard seven-seat layout? If so, this raises the car's price all the way to £78,595, and replaces the middle bench with individual swivelling captain's chairs. Can't wait for an Ioniq 9? Critics demand Labour to scrap its £700m taxpayer-funded electric car grant as EVs fail to sell and transport minister admits she doesn't own one

A Labour plan for £700 million of taxpayer-funded subsidies to encourage more people to buy electric vehicles (EVs) has been blasted by critics who are calling for it to be scrapped. Heidi Alexander, the Transport Secretary, will announce grants for drivers to cover the cost of a new EV, as well as more money for charging points. It comes amid growing concern that the lack of sales of EVs are putting the Government's net zero targets at risk, The Telegraph reported. Ms Alexander admitted on Sunday that she has not been able to afford an electric car - as she prepares to unveil millions of pounds in new subsidies. The Cabinet minister- who earns around £160,000 - said she had not purchased a vehicle for about six years as it was 'expensive'. She also pointed to difficulties in getting charging cables from her terraced house - but said she would 'definitely' be buying an EV next time. Critics called for the subsidy scheme to be 'scrapped immediately'. Shimeon Lee, policy analyst at the TaxPayers' Alliance said: 'Taxpayers shouldn't be footing the bill for the government's costly obsession with net zero. 'If electric vehicles are truly the future, they should succeed on their own merits, not rely on £700 million in handouts to prop up sluggish sales. 'This subsidy scheme should be scrapped immediately.' Many drivers have been put off by the price of electric cars, which average around £50,000, more than double the cost of a petrol car at around £22,000, according to NimbleFins. Due to the batteries degrading, the electric vehicles also lose value faster than petrol and diesel cars. From 2030 sales of new diesel or petrol only vehicles are meant to stop - while from 2035 all new cars must be electric. The move will force drivers to switch to electric-powered vehicles, whether they want to or not. The subsidies will favour British-built cars in particular, including the Nissan Leaf, which is being made in Sunderland from next year. While EV sales have steadily grown in recent years, much of the demand has been met by fleet purchases rather than ordinary drivers. Private retail demand for EVs grew 5.9 per cent since in the past year but still accounted for just less than four in 10 new cars registered. Business registrations also fell 15 per cent this year. The roughly 1.5 million EVs reported to be on UK Roads are still dwarfed by the 19.2 million petrol and 11 million diesel vehicles. Appearing on the BBC 's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show, Ms Alexander said a £63million fund would create tens of thousands of new charging points. The cash will help councils install cables under roads where there are no driveways. And a plan due to be revealed on Tuesday would see Brits given grants towards buying an EV. The scheme - thought to be worth around £640 million - could mean money off down payments. The biggest grants are likely to target UK-manufactured vehicles such as Nissan. Similar subsidies were prematurely scrapped by the Tories in 2022. Ms Alexander said there was 'some good news' on EV sales, pointing out that as of June one in four new cars in the UK was electric. 'But we do need to make it easier and cheaper for people to buy an electric vehicle. 'So today we're announcing a really big investment, £63 million in charging infrastructure across the country, £25 million for councils so that people like me, who don't have a driveway. 'I live in a terrace house, if I had an EV, I'd be asking myself questions about how I would get the electric cable across to the car.' Kuenssberg interjected: 'So the Transport Transport Secretary doesn't have an electric car, but you're telling everyone else to have one?' Ms Alexander replied: 'I don't have an electric car, Laura, but I'm like millions of people in this country who, I bought a new car about six years ago, I'm thinking about the next car that I will purchase, and it will definitely be an electric vehicle. 'I'm not in the habit of changing my car on a yearly basis, expensive as it is, and so that's why we're making £25 million available to councils so that they can provide financial support to households who want to put in a cross pavement gulley, so that you can safely run the cable across the pavement.' When the Conservatives scrapped the subsidies for electric vehicles in 2022, it was thought they were no longer needed as the UK electric car revolution has been 'kickstarted'. Across the first six months of 2025 new battery electric cars sales have risen 34.6 per cent to around 230,000, which equates to 21.6% of the market. However the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate the government has set says 28 per cent of car sales should be electric this year, meaning the sale of EVs is behind schedule for net zero plans.
