I'm using Samsung's Voice Recorder to avoid this app's premium plan
I can't be alone in wishing I'd kept a journal over the years. I'd love to reflect on what I was up to on certain days 20 years ago and how I was processing it all. Other than a few batches of photos and my increasingly fading memory, the records of my various travel adventures have mostly been lost. And those were the exciting times — the humdrum days in between have been almost entirely condemned to the mists of time.
I don't beat myself up about not keeping a journal because I know I wouldn't have stuck with it. Having to sit down and write or type for 15 minutes in the evening would have fallen by the wayside pretty quickly. But recent advances in AI have made me rethink this. Now, belatedly, I'm journaling every day. It takes around two minutes before bed each night to do it via Samsung Voice Recorder, and I even realized I can use it to avoid the premium plan on one of the best journaling apps.
A tale of two apps: Voice Recorder and Day One

After upgrading to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus last year, I started playing around with the new Galaxy AI features. The AI transcription in Samsung Voice Recorder inspired me to use it for journaling. I'm aware that some Android phones have had live transcription features for a while, but I was particularly impressed with how quickly and easily Voice Recorder can both transcribe the voice notes after the fact and use AI to tidy them up.
This got me 90% of the way towards the plan of a quick brain dump each evening, but I was also wary of leaving the transcribed notes scattered about in an unordered fashion. You can arrange them in categories in both Voice Recorder and Samsung Notes, but what I really wanted was an organized journal setup in which I just dictate an entry, and it labels and stores it in an easy-to-reference way later. The simplest option was to use a journaling app with AI transcription baked in.
That left me with two imperfect solutions I could combine to meet my needs.
The Day One app fit the bill almost perfectly. It's a polished journaling app popular on both iOS and Android that lets you log text, photos, and audio entries, plus it can sync across devices. The only snag was that, while the app has a free tier to record entries, you have to pay for the premium plan if you want to use the transcription feature. That left me with two imperfect solutions I could combine to meet my needs.
Now, each evening, I do the following. Open Voice Recorder and hit Record, then talk about my day for a minute or two. Stop the recording and save it, then tap on it and press Transcribe. A recording of that length takes around ten seconds to process. Tap and hold the text and select Copy all. Three taps to exit Voice Recorder, open the Day One app, and press New entry. Paste the text, and I'm done.
The whole process takes two to three minutes. Admittedly, the Galaxy AI transcriptions aren't always perfect as I'm usually tiredly rambling into the phone. This isn't an issue for me as I'm not planning to publish my memoirs. I just want enough to jog my memory, and it's more than adequate for that purpose.
Am I in the wrong for not paying?

For the record, I'm not against paying for premium plans on apps if they're offering a genuine benefit — Duolingo is one example of an app that has certainly done well out of me financially. Day One is a great app, and I'd urge anyone who can benefit from the premium tier to sign up if it fits your budget.
In my case, I'm just minimally using the app while getting the one premium tier feature I need for free on my device. Almost all of the many premium perks would go unused if I signed up. At over $40 per year, I find that expense hard to justify. But I'll let you judge my actions in the poll below.

This setup might not work for everyone, but it's been a game-changer for me. I've finally found a low-effort way to keep track of my days, and it's made me weirdly excited to look back at them someday. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 Regains Foldable Throne After Years
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is so thin Ben Sin Over a 12-month stretch between 2019 and 2020, Samsung invented the foldable phone industry that we know today. In 2019, it was the South Korean tech giant which released the first functional, useable foldable phone (I had to add the descriptive caveats because a now-bankrupted Chinese company named Royole had rushed out a foldable phone before Samsung, but it was only sold in China and did not operate too well), and then a year later, Samsung also released the first flip phone style compact foldable. Fold 7 in the hand Ben Sin But while Samsung pioneered the tech, Chinese brands soon took that idea and began engineering superior foldable hardware. Starting in 2021, when Huawei released the Mate X2, all the way to last year, when Oppo released the Find N5, Chinese foldable phones were flat out superior in hardware in almost every way that mattered: they were thinner, lighter, with bigger batteries, bigger camera sensors, and screens with a less prominent crease at the folding point. Ben Sin It took a few years, but Samsung has finally stepped up, and its new Galaxy Z Fold 7 features hardware that more than catches up — and even surpasses — the competition. Significantly thinner compared to last generation The new Fold 7 (left) next to the Fold 6 Ben Sin The biggest change to the Fold 7 is that it has slimmed down drastically. Last year's Fold 6 measured 12.2mm thick when folded. This year's Fold 7 measures just 8.9mm, which is either the number one or two thinnest in the industry right now (Honor is claiming to be thinner at 8.8mm but there have been some disputes). The three latest foldable phones right now Ben Sin If you compare the Fold 7 just against previous Samsung foldables, the new thinness is absolutely jaw-dropping. The phone is also much lighter, at 217g, compared to 239g last year. From worst crease to arguably best crease Samsung's Fold 7 also reduces the display crease at the folding point. The crease is still noticeable if you actively look for it, but it is not as deep or jarring as previous generations of Samsung foldables. Fold 7 screen Ben Sin The method by which Samsung used to reduce the crease appears to be the exact same method Chinese brands have been using for years: allowing a small amount of space in the hinge for the screen to fold in a curved form instead of a straight fold. (The below marketing image is from Chinese brands OPPO/OnePlus, but Samsung's hinge uses this same mechanism to reduce the crease). This is a marketing image released by OPPO/OnePlus for its foldable phone two years ago. But Samsung's hinge now uses this same mechanism. OnePlus But to my eyes, Samsung's Fold 7 crease is even less noticeable (shallower) than the crease in all my other Chinese foldable phones. I feel like the crease in my Honor Magic V5 and Vivo X Fold 5 (both just as new as the Fold 7), has slightly deeper grooves at the folding point. In other words, Samsung's crease went from the worst in the industry to the best. This isn't new tech, however I need to make clear here that almost every improvement the Fold 7 has made -- slimming down, reducing crease -- are not new tech, and in fact, Samsung is merely catching up to the Chinese competition. For me, who has seen all the latest Chinese foldables, the Fold 7 makes me think "about time" more than "wow this is so amazing." Fold 7 in the hand Ben Sin However, Chinese foldables are not available worldwide (they're virtually non-existent in North America and South Korea). So for people who have only seen Samsung's foldables in the past, the Fold 7 will appear very, very impressive to them. Other bits make the Fold 7 the most polished foldable Fold 7 in folded form Ben Sin In addition to the new slimdown and display, the Fold 7 brings back the best-in-class hinge (which has always been a strength of Samsung foldables). The Fold 7 is also powered by a special edition of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite that's a bit over-clocked, so it is technically the most powerful silicon in the Android realm right now. Add all these things together, and one can make a case that the Samsung Fold 7 hardware is the best in the industry. This was something I could not say from 2021 to 2024. The camera system of the Fold 7, however, are just solid, but unremarkable. There's a new 200-megapixel main camera that can grab some good looking images, but the 10-megapixel 3X zoom lens is dated, and falls behind the Periscope cameras offered by Chinese competition. The 12-megapixel ultrawide is solid if shooting under good lighting scenarios. Overall, Samsung's camera system is fine for a foldable, but does fall behind Vivo's last two generation of foldable cameras. Fold 7 Ben Sin Battery capacity is also on the low side compared to the competition, at 4,400 mAh. Other foldables, like the Honor Magic V5 or Vivo X Fold 5, pack batteries north of 5,500 mAh in a similar form factor. That's because Chinese brands use a new battery tech known as silicon carbon that is more energy-dense. Samsung has so far avoided using this new battery tech. Considering Samsung's past history with batteries, it is understandable why the company is cautious, but I do need to point out Chinese foldables have been using these batteries for two years and I have not heard any reports of them malfunctioning. Still, the Fold 7 battery life should be enough to last an average Joe all day. I am a heavy user who is always outside (I do not work a 9-5, and I do not like to sit at home), and this phone could still last me about 10 hours of use. For a less active person, who's stuck in the office 8-9 hours a day, or who drives everywhere, the Fold 7 will be able to finish their entire day with enough juice to spare. The Fold 7 is a hit at home in Korea, and will be worldwide Reports out of South Korea show the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a major hit in its home country, as it has shattered Samsung's pre-order records. And I think the Fold 7 will have similar success worldwide (maybe except inside China, where Samsung has almost no market presence). Fold 7's outside screen next to the Fold 6. Ben Sin Despite Chinese foldables being clearly superior the past few years, various factors (some out of their control) have prevented Chinese foldables from reaching mainstream appeal. Samsung's superior brand power, marketing, and physical retail presence has kept its outdated foldables the last couple years afloat; now that Samsung actually has up-to-date, bleeding edge hardware? I expect the Fold 7 to be a hit from U.K. to Germany, Hong Kong to Singapore. As a tech reviewer, I must still say: about time, Samsung. Now let's not wait four years until your next hardware push.

Apple rumors reveal 8 products we could still see in 2025
We currently sit in that glorious period between Apple's WWDC and the tech giant's autumn iPhone release, which means there's a lull in the action. Where's there's a lull, there is speculation, and while we're pretty certain the iPhone 17 is coming — along with everything announced at WWDC 2025 — there may still be some things in the pipeline for Apple. The below products are mostly rumors until Apple actually announces them. After all, delays happen and that's certainly been true of Apple products the last few years. The Vision Pro, for instance, was delayed multiple times before its eventual release in 2024. In any case, if you're fiending for some Apple tech, late 2025 may be the time for you as there are plenty of products that may come out by then. Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and new SE When Apple released the Apple Watch 10, it was a mild disappointment for many, since it was essentially the same design as earlier versions but with upgraded internals. This was despite rumors that some redesigns were coming. Additionally, the Apple Watch 10 launched alone, with the SE and Apple Watch Ultra not receiving upgrades. According to rumors, that may change this year. For starters, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 may be the first watch in the series to feature Apple Intelligence. In addition, it's rumored that the Apple Watch 11 and a new Apple Watch SE are in the works. For the new SE model, Apple has reportedly run into production issues so it may be delayed another year. However, until September's alleged release date, we won't know for sure. AirPods Pro 3 Apple launched the AirPods 4 in late 2024 with some neat new features like a built-in hearing test along with hearing aid features. In 2025, it seems like the AirPods Pro is getting its turn in the spotlight with the rumored debut of the AirPods Pro 3. The series hasn't been updated since the AirPods Pro 2 released in 2022, so it's definitely due for an upgrade. For the AirPods Pro 3, the rumored upgrades are about what you'd expect. Apple is reportedly improving audio quality and active noise cancelling, while also inheriting the hearing aid features from the AirPods 4. It's likely getting a new chip to improve performance across the board and may borrow some design elements from the AirPods 4, such as the capacitive touch pairing button. Apple TV 4K The Apple TV 4K will be the first Apple TV device released since the prior generation dropped in 2022. The current model is powered by an A15 bionic chip, the same one that's found in the iPhone 14, so it's probably due for an upgrade. Per rumors, the upgraded model will likely sport an A17 Pro, A18, or A19 chip, which should boost performance quite a bit. The rumors also say that the device will support Apple Intelligence, and since that requires 8GB of memory, that means the amount of memory will double from the current model's 4GB. Additional Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple may be working on Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 versions of its wireless chips. If that upgrade makes its way into the Apple TV 4K it should help keep the product relevant if the next generation takes three more years to drop. HomePod mini 2 Much like the Apple TV 4K and AirPods Pro 2, Apple hasn't launched a new HomePod mini in a long time. Unlike those other two, it's been an even longer five years since its last release. That could change in 2025 with the rumored release of the HomePod mini 2. Rumors of this started with Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter, where he said that the new device should be coming by the end of the year. Not too much is known about the mini 2. Allegedly, it's coming with an Apple-designed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, which will support Wi-Fi 6E. Nothing else has been confirmed, but, after five years, it feels safe to assume that Apple will pop-in a different processor and do something to improve sound quality. New colors aren't outside the realm of possibility either. Apple's smart speaker with a display Speaking of HomePods, Cupertino has allegedly been working on a smart display similar to the Google Nest Hub that is basically a speaker with a screen. This new device would blend the HomePod, iPad, and Apple TV tech together and push Apple more into the smart home space alongside Amazon and Google. It's codenamed the J490, at least according to rumors. Of all the products on this list, the smart display is the least likely to come out in 2025. It was originally supposed to be introduced in March 2025, per Mark Gurman, but software issues delayed the product. A late 2025 release date is expected but rumors suggest the company could also wait until 2026. AirTag 2 The original AirTag was a piece of tech that helped launch a whole industry of trackers. AirTags launched in 2021, and despite being a little boring, they were found to be supremely useful for finding lost items. The upgraded AirTag 2 is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 17 later this year. For the record, we don't know how Apple will name the AirTag 2 and we're just calling it that for simplicity's sake. The rumors came from 9to5mac and just like the HomePod mini 2, we still don't know a ton of the details. The new tag will apparently be compatible with iOS 18.6, so it'll work with older iPhones. It's also expected to have better connectivity, longer range, better security, and improved battery life. It'll allegedly come in an 'anti-tamper' form factor, which means it might have a rechargeable battery, but that hasn't been confirmed. We'll know more in September if the rumors are true. M4 Mac Pro With the launch of the new Mac Studio, that leaves the Mac Pro as the only device left in Apple's Mac product lineup without the company's M4 chip. That is likely to change this year. Per Mark Gurman, both the Mac Studio and Mac Pro were on pace for a 2025 release. Since the Mac Studio did, in fact, release in 2025, it stands to reason that the Mac Pro is also coming. Gurman says that it should arrive in the 'second half' of 2025, so anytime between now and the end of the year. With this upgrade, it'll be the first time that Apple has ever brought its latest chip to the entire family of Mac products. That's about the long and short of the rumors about the Mac Pro. We haven't seen much in terms of expected prices or specs, but we imagine that the specs will be good and the price will be expensive. Devices with the M5 chip Per MacRumors, several devices are slated to launch in 2025 with the upcoming M5 chip. These devices include a new iPad Pro, an upgraded version of the Vision Pro, a new MacBook Pro, a new Mac mini, and a new iMac. These rumors stem from a few assumptions. For instance, Apple released the new MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini simultaneously, so it's likely that the company will do so again. The Vision Pro is expected to get the new chip but remain otherwise identical, so it's more of a refresh than a new product. Finally, the iPad Pro was redesigned just last year with an OLED display and a thinner design, so it's likely this year's release will mostly focus on the M5 chip. We focused mostly on rumored devices that are not the iPhone 17, since everyone fully expects it to be released. In any case, nearly all of these releases are allegedly slated for late 2025, so if they're going to make it to market, there's a high chance we'll learn more about them around the same time the iPhone 17 launches.
