UAE showcases impact of global development intiatives advancing SDGs at UN forum
Dubai-New York: The UAE presented the results of its global development initiatives supporting SDG8 during its participation in the 2025 UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), reaffirming its commitment to promoting inclusive economic growth and decent work worldwide.
Organised by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs at UN headquarters in New York City, this year's forum is held under the theme "Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals for leaving no one behind." The UAE's participation reflects its commitment to a development model rooted in sustainability, opportunity creation, and international partnerships that advance the 2030 Agenda.
Reimagining Economic Growth for People and the Planet
The forum featured a high-impact roundtable titled 'Beyond 2030: Reimagining Economic Growth for People and Planet' hosted by the Secretarait of the UAE National Committee on SDGs, the UAE Consulate General in New York, and the UAE-US Business Council.
The session brought together senior UAE officials, including His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange and Chair of the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals; His Excellency Mohammed Abdulrahman AlHawi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Investment; His Excellency Mohammed Ali Rashid Lootah, Director General of Dubai Chambers; Lt. Col. Dr. Ahmad Al Zarooni, Director of International Police Representation, Ministry of Interior and Her Excellency Amna Binzaal Almheiri, UAE Consul General in New York.
The discussion focused on mobilising private sector investment to advance sustainable and inclusive growth. Participants also explored solutions to address global skill gaps and reconfigure international trade frameworks to support development.
Furthermore, the UAE delegation hosted two thematic panels. The first, "Economic Diplomacy in Action," examined how diplomacy can foster economic resilience and stability in alignment with SDG8. The second, "Vision into Action," explored policy frameworks that support SDG16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions.
Growth Centred on Cooperation and Partnership
H.E. Lootah, said the UAE's model for economic growth is shaping the future of work and creating opportunities for new generations at home and abroad.
He added that the UAE has succeeded in building a balanced and diversified economic model grounded in inclusiveness and sustainability, positioning the country as a key contributor to continuous development efforts and solutions to current and future challenges in line with the 2030 Agenda and beyond.
H.E. Lootah emphasised that the importance of establishing global consensus around sustainable economic concepts and future work patterns, especially in the context of setting new global development goals beyond 2045 (XDGs). He noted that the UAE delegation's participation in the 2025 High-Level Political Forum aligns with this goal, aiming to strengthen partnerships and exchange expertise through strategic initiatives led by the Government Experience Exchange Programme, along with contributions from leading national entities driving inclusive and sustainable development globally.
Investment in Impact
H.E. AlHawi, emphasised that the country's investment approach is centred on strategic partnerships that foster innovation and long-term growth. This approach is focused on delivering measurable outcomes and lasting impact to support inclusive development, expand economic opportunities, and contribute to broader social advancement.

UN High-Level Political Forum
The HLPF on Sustainable Development is the UN's central platform for reviewing and advancing SDGs. Established in 2012, the forum plays a pivotal role in monitoring national and international progress on the 2030 Agenda.
Participating delegations at HLPF conduct assessments of progress toward the SDGs, with this year's forum featuring in-depth reviews of five priority goals: SDG3 (ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages); SDG5 (achieving equality and empowering all women and girls); SDG8 (promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all); SDG14 (conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development); and SDG17 (strengthening and revitalising the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development).

In May, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed and Mr Trump witnessed the unveiling of plans for a new 5GW UAE-US AI Campus in Abu Dhabi during the president's visit to the country. Mubadala became a co-sponsor of the annual tennis tournament in 2023. The tournament is a 500-level event on the ATP and WTA tours, featuring a field of 48 players in the men's singles event and 28 players in the women's singles event.

UAE and US working to 'get chips moving' after AI deal
After this week's debut of the White House's Artificial Intelligence Action Plan, the UAE is ready to expedite its AI partnership with the US. This follows President Donald Trump's visit to Abu Dhabi in May, when he announced the US-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership, which included plans for a 5GW UAE-US AI Campus. Those plans allow for the UAE to obtain powerful CPUs and GPUs from the US which are necessary to build up AI infrastructure. Once completed, part of the campus, dubbed Stargate UAE, will be among the largest AI data centres in the world. Security guarantees to protect the UAE AI technology from falling into the wrong hands were are major aspect of the deal. Also bolstering the deal, Mr Trump's much-anticipated AI plan, unveiled on Wednesday, seeks to reduce regulatory barriers in place to build up AI infrastructure in the US, while pushing for increasing the prevalence of US AI technology around the world. That bodes well for the UAE, and other countries with similar AI aspirations. It's also a sharp contrast to the former president Joe Biden's policies. His administration sought tighter export controls on US chips to prevent them from being used in China. 'The UAE welcomes President Trump's AI Action Plan and is ready to fast track our strategic AI partnership with the US,' Yousef Al Otaiba, UAE Minister of State and ambassador to the US, said on Wednesday. 'As a trusted partner, we are working closely with leading US companies to adopt and scale American technology in the UAE and beyond.' Some pundits aren't sold however, and they're trying to exert influence to slow the US-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership. In an opinion article in The Washington Post, Christopher Chivvis and Sam Winter-Levy from the Carnegie Endowment, a US-based think tank, expressed concern about China somehow getting access to the US AI technology, among other things. 'To now approve the offshoring of the data centres that will house so many of the resulting chips to another conflict-prone region would be a major unforced error – one that will prove difficult to reverse,' they wrote. The UAE has addressed this by committing to a $1.4 trillion investment framework for AI infrastructure in the US. Regardless, the Wall Street Journal also reported that some in the White House have sought to take a closer look at the recently announced UAE deal, amid concerns about US technology diffusion. But last week, the White House cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence adviser beat back those concerns, and reaffirmed the US partnership with the UAE. 'These are countries that are long-standing partners and allies of the US going back many years,' White House AI chief David Sacks said during a round-table discussion at the Pennsylvania Energy and AI Summit, referring to the UAE. Mr Sacks added that the Trump administration thought that if US technology wasn't used in AI projects around the world, China-owned Huawei would step in to fill the vacuum. 'We don't want to create demand for Huawei,' he explained, also describing some of the chip smuggling scenarios that have become prevalent in media reports as quixotic. He said the newest standard data centres technology hardware is approximately 2.4m tall, with servers weighing 1,600kg, and that it's 'very easy to see' if they're being transported. 'I know that our Gulf State partners would honour our security agreement,' he said just hours before President Trump appeared at the event in Pennsylvania. 'This is ultimately a trust-but-verify situation, and all we have to do is send an inspector to a data centre and they can count the racks,' Mr Sacks explained, reiterating that he felt the scenarios of AI hardware smuggling were 'blown wildly out of proportion.' Meanwhile, there's no indication from the White House or Department of Commerce, which is ultimately responsible for allowing the export of US technology, that criticism of the UAE deal is gaining traction. In a statement to The National, the UAE ambassador expressed continued optimism about the AI plans with the US announced back in May. 'Signed just 60 days ago in Abu Dhabi, the UAE-US investment and Ai partnership will deliver enormous benefits to both countries,' Mr Al Otaiba said. 'High level teams have been actively engaging to advance the agreement, to get chips moving and to accelerate technology co-operation.'

He pointed to initiatives like the 2045 XDGs Report and GEEP as models that demonstrate strategic partnerships and forward-looking development. Preparing for the 2026 voluntary national review Lootah announced the start of preparations for the 2026 Voluntary National Review (VNR) to assess progress on the SDGs. The review will involve contributions from government, private sector, and civil society, reinforcing the UAE's dedication to transparency and long-term, sustainable development planning. Hosting the UN Water Conference 2026 The UAE is also preparing to host the UN Water Conference in December 2026, further emphasizing its role in advancing global water sustainability and promoting environmental solutions. Advancing global partnerships and dialogue The UAE delegation showcased national initiatives and leadership in climate action and human development through events like the 'Shaping Tomorrow: UAE Leadership for a Sustainable Future' exhibition. A session by GEEP expanded the UAE's partnership network to nearly 50 countries and six international organizations. Launch of the 2045 XDGs Report A key highlight was the launch of the 2045 XDGs Report, which outlines global development priorities beyond 2030. Supported by a global survey, the report aims to guide international efforts to address emerging challenges and identify opportunities over the next two decades. Championing innovation through global councils The UAE highlighted the Global Councils for SDGs, launched at the World Government Summit, as vital platforms uniting global leaders from various sectors to share knowledge and accelerate SDG progress. Focus on gender equality and child welfare Sessions organized by the General Secretariat of the National Committee on SDGs spotlighted gender balance, women's leadership, and child welfare, while addressing the digital gender divide. These sessions underlined the role of inclusive growth in sustainable development. Economic diplomacy and sustainable growth The UAE hosted a roundtable on reimagining economic growth, linking economic and social objectives. It led discussions on economic diplomacy to promote global stability and sustainability. Environmental initiatives on the global stage The Ministry of Interior presented successful cross-border projects like the Green Shield Operation, which protects biodiversity in the Amazon Basin—a showcase of the UAE's contribution to global environmental cooperation. Strengthening bilateral engagements Throughout the forum, the UAE conducted 48 bilateral meetings and participated in key events like Science Day, reinforcing its commitment to international cooperation.
