Springer Hits Two Homers, Drives In 7, Jays Beat Yankees

Yankees 5 Blue Jays 12
What a great game!
Two games in a row where a Yankee catcher's getting his glove in the way of a swing was a huge moment. I wonder how many times a team has been charged with catcher's interference two days in a row?

The big inning was the seventh. The Yankees had tied the game in the top of the inning because of two Jays errors. Our defense has been so good it was strange to have two errors in one inning. But then, in the bottom of the inning:
Myles Straw flied out. That's ok, he made a nice catch in the bottom of the inning that helped keep the game tied.
Andrés Giménez, who had homered earlier in the game, off lefty Max Fried, singled.
Tyler Heineman walked.
The Yankees brought in Luke Weaver. Pinch-hitter Addison Barger got to a full count and then swung and missed, but he pointed out that the catcher's glove got into his swing path. The Jays challenged, and it was apparent. Bases loaded.
Ernie Clement singled off shortstop Anthony Volpe's glove. 5-4 Jays.
And then George Springer hit a grand slam home run. 105.4 mph, 405 feet. 9-4 Jays.
Vlad ground out and Kirk struck out.
We also had a big inning in the fourth. Springer started it with a home run. Two outs later, Davis Schneider singled (he's had a good couple of days against the Yankees). Straw walked. Then, the most unlikely hero of all, Andrés Giménez, homered off a lefty who had a 1.92 ERA coming into the game.
We got more runs in the eighth. Nathan Lukes walked. Straw struck out. Giménez walked. Tyler Heineman struck out. Addison Barger singled (with two strikes) to load the bases. Springer singled to add two more RBI to his afternoon.
We had nine runs on eight hits. Six walks and three home runs helped it along. Springer had three hits and seven RBI. Giménez had two hits and three RBI.
Coming off a super start, Kevin Gausman was shaky today, especially in the first inning. I was wondering if the long pregame ceremony caused him trouble. He gave up two runs in the first inning on two walks and two singles. After that, he threw four scoreless innings, but he had to fight his way through them. In all, he allowed six hits, two earned, four walks and three strikeouts.

An umpire didn't help him. The umpire had a very loose idea of the strike zone.
After that, we had a bunch of relievers:
Nick Sandlin threw one scoreless inning.
Justin Bruihl got one out in the seventh, but gave up a hit and an intentional walk, Aaron Judge again.
Braydon Fisher came in and got a ground ball to third base, but it went right through Clement. A run scored.. Then Jasson Dominguez grounded out to Vlad, who had it go off his glove for an error. Vlad looked like he wanted to throw to second and turned his body before he got the ball. Another run scored, and the game was tied. But a fly out (nice catch, Straw) and a strikeout got us out of the inning. Great job, Fisher.
After we got the five runs in the bottom of the seventh, Chad Green pitched the eighth, giving up just a walk.
Yariel Rodríguez gave up a run in the ninth on a walk, single and ground out.
Jays of the Day: Giménez (.382 WPA, 3 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk, 3 RBI), Springer (.259, 3 hits, 2 homers, 7 RBI, 1 walk) and Barger (.093, 1 for 2, plus catcher interference).
Other Award: Fisher had the number, but that was because of two errors, so I can't give him one.
Tomorrow Will Warren (5-4, 4.37) vs. Jose Berrios is the pitching match-up. It is an evening game.

Raptors' Alijah Martin lights up Summer League with massive poster dunk

The post Raptors' Alijah Martin lights up Summer League with massive poster dunk appeared first on ClutchPoints. Alijah Martin created an incredible highlight during his NBA Summer League debut in Friday's matchup between the Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls. Advertisement Martin made his debut after the Raptors selected him 39th overall in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft. He ended an marvelous collegiate career where he made two Final Four appearances with the Florida Atlantic Owls and Florida Gators. His second attempts saw him win the national championship, playing a key role as a full-time starter. During the second quarter of the game, Martin's first made shot was a fierce poster dunk. He was on the perimeter as he drove into the paint and jumped in the air to throw down the one-hander. How Alijah Martin, Raptors played against Bulls Bob Donnan-Imagn Images Alijah Martin had his moments as he helped the Raptors dominate the Bulls 116-72 on Friday night. Advertisement The game started out as initially close with the Bulls up 24-21 after the first quarter. Toronto responded in strong fashion, outscoring their opponents for the remainder of the game. This was especially the case in the second quarter, where the Raptors limited the opposing squad to nine points. The Raptors were red-hot with their shot selection for the entire contest. They shot 51.8% overall, including 40.6% from downtown. This was in stark contrast to Chicago's woeful shooting splits of 30.9% and 26.9%. Five players scored in double-digits on Toronto's behalf, including Martin. He finished with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. He shot 6-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. AJ Lawson led the team in scoring with 22 points and six rebounds. Meanwhile, Jonathan Mogbo had 15 points, Jamison Battle put up 13 points, while Ja'Kobe Walter provided 12 points. The Raptors will prepare for their next matchup in Las Vegas. They face the Orlando Magic on July 13 at 6 p.m. ET. Advertisement Related: The move Toronto Raptors still must make in 2025 NBA free agency

Hornets Rookie Kon Knueppel Signs Deal with Jordan Brand

Hornets Rookie Kon Knueppel Signs Deal with Jordan Brand originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kon Knueppel is just a few weeks into his NBA journey. His Charlotte Hornets are set to open their Summer League season on Friday night against the Utah Jazz. Advertisement The 19-year-old Milwaukee native spent one season at Duke, where he built a strong résumé. Knueppel worked his way up to become the No. 4 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Now a member of the Hornets, Knueppel is making headlines before even stepping on the court in a Charlotte jersey. On Thursday, he signed a multi-year shoe deal with Jordan Brand. Nick DePaula, who covers the NBA and WNBA shoe industry for SLAM Magazine and ESPN, broke the news on X: "Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel has signed a multi-year shoe deal with Jordan Brand." DePaula added: "The 4th overall pick in the draft will become the key Jordan endorser on Charlotte, the only NBA franchise to feature the Jumpman logo on all uniforms." Advertisement The Jumpman logo has been a Jordan Brand exclusive since 2015, when the brand opened its flagship store in Chicago. The logo, featuring the silhouette of NBA legend Michael Jordan, is worn only by the Hornets as part of their game uniforms. At Duke, Knueppel played in 39 games and averaged 14.4 points per game. He shared the floor with Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 draft, who now plays for the Dallas Mavericks. After Friday's game against Utah, the Hornets take on the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. Kon Knueppel Got Embarrassed By Fellow Duke Alum In Summer League Debut

Kon Knueppel Got Embarrassed By Fellow Duke Alum In Summer League Debut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kon Knueppel finally made his NBA Summer League debut with the Charlotte Hornets on Friday, but it was not exactly a memorable one for the former Duke Blue Devils star. Knueppel struggled to find his rhythm on offense against the Utah Jazz, scoring just five points on 1-for-8 shooting from the field. He missed all five of his 3-point attempts and turned the ball over four times. Advertisement Knueppel also got some sort of a "Welcome to the NBA" moment when fellow Duke product Kyle Filipowski rejected his layup attempt. Despite using his left hand, Knueppel was not able to avoid Filipowski's reach. Unlike Knueppel, Filipowski had a spectacular outing, scoring 32 points on 12-for-17 shooting to go along with six rebounds and five assists. But the last laugh still belonged to Knueppel and the Hornets, who pulled off a 111-105 win over the Jazz at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. It was another rookie who shone for the Hornets, with former UConn Huskies star Liam McNeeley pacing Charlotte with 22 points off the bench while grabbing a total of 12 boards. Advertisement Jazz forward Kyle Filipowski (22) fouls out and walks past Utah head coach Will Hardy.© Matt Blewett-Imagn Images Although they both recently played for the Blue Devils, Knueppel and Filipowski were never on the same Duke team. Filipowski suited up for Duke from the 2022-23 season to the 2023-24 campaign before entering the NBA in 2024. Knueppel, on the other hand, was with the Blue Devils for just a season (2024-25) before getting selected fourth overall by the Hornets in the 2025 NBA Draft. Up ahead for the Hornets is a date with the Philadelphia 76ers this Saturday at the same venue.
