Indore Is India's Cleanest City Again: Here's What It Does Differently

Indore's consistent success is a result of a multi-pronged approach encompassing robust waste management, smart infrastructure, strong civic engagement
Indore, the city famous for its delicious breakfast poha, has once again cemented its reputation as India's cleanest city, securing the top spot in the government's annual Swachh Survekshan cleanliness survey for an unprecedented eighth consecutive year. The results, announced on Thursday, saw Surat and Navi Mumbai follow Indore in the top three cleanest cities in the country.
In a separate category for cities with populations between 3 and 10 lakh, Noida was recognised as the cleanest, with Chandigarh and Mysore coming in second and third, respectively. President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards to the winners at a ceremony held in New Delhi, attended by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal and other dignitaries.
Indore's consistent success in maintaining its cleanliness isn't accidental. It's a result of a multi-pronged approach encompassing robust waste management, smart infrastructure, strong civic engagement, and innovative services. Here's a closer look at what sets Indore apart:
100% Door-to-Door Collection & Source Segregation
Advanced Waste Processing & Resource Conversion
Indore is a leader in waste treatment. Nearly all generated waste is processed and converted into valuable resources. A large-scale Gobar-Dhan plant plays a crucial role, processing up to 550–692 tonnes of wet waste daily to produce bio-CNG and organic compost. The bio-CNG even fuels city buses and is available to residents at discounted rates. Furthermore, plastics are recycled, with some even being converted into fuel, while garden waste is composted or reused through mobile units and decentralised facilities.
Smart Infrastructure & Centralised Monitoring
Indore leverages technology for efficient waste management. A fleet of GPS-enabled garbage trucks and controlled traffic patterns ensure timely waste collection. This entire operation is centrally monitored from a control room, allowing for real-time performance tracking. The city also employs night operations using water-misting road sweepers, powered by recycled water from sewage treatment plants, showcasing a commitment to sustainability.
Zero-Waste Zones & Behaviour Change Campaigns
Indore has successfully transformed certain areas, including wards, markets, zoos, slums, and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), into 'zero-waste zones." Within these communities, segregation, reuse, composting, and recycling are actively practised.
The city has also launched impactful behavioural change campaigns like 'Bartan Banks" to discourage single-use plastics and 'Jhola Banks" for cloth bags. City-wide plastic buyback schemes and public pledges further reinforce the message of cleanliness. The popular 'Swachhta Anthems," catchy songs played during door-to-door waste collection, effectively engage citizens and foster civic pride.
Strong Civic Engagement & Enforcement
NGOs in Indore play a vital role, conducting year-round awareness drives, rainwater harvesting initiatives, and clean-air campaigns. They also promote zero-waste policies at events like temple festivals and cricket matches. Citizens, students, shopkeepers, and local committees actively participate in cleanliness pledges and competitions. To deter littering, the city utilises CCTV monitoring and imposes fines. Notably, the municipal corporation even implements stern enforcement measures, including termination for non-compliant staff, highlighting their commitment to maintaining high standards.
Innovative Services & Energy Conservation
The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) is continually innovating. They are set to launch an on-demand waste and bulk cleaning service via the city's 311 mobile platform, offering flexible waste pickup and transparent billing. Furthermore, an energy-conservation drive in early 2025 yielded impressive results, saving over 1.5 crore units of electricity and reducing 12,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions within 100 days, thanks to strong community involvement and the adoption of solar and efficiency measures.
Indore's continuous reign as India's cleanest city is a testament to its holistic and dedicated approach to sanitation, setting a benchmark for urban cleanliness across the nation.

Karnataka launches ‘Know GST' drive to calm UPI-linked tax panic among traders: Report

With anxiety spreading among small and unregistered traders over tax notices linked to UPI payments, the Karnataka government has launched a statewide awareness initiative titled 'Know GST'. The campaign aims to clarify Goods & Services Tax (GST) norms and ease fears.(Shutterstock) The campaign aims to clarify Goods & Services Tax (GST) norms and ease fears that have led to a noticeable drop in digital transactions across the state. The first workshop under the initiative was held on Monday in Koramangala, Bengaluru, by the Commercial Taxes Department. Officials explained GST rules and thresholds, seeking to reassure traders who have recently come under scrutiny, the Times of India reported. (Also Read: 'Bengaluru isn't easy, but...': Techie's viral goodbye post hits home for city dwellers) Under GST law, traders must register if their annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services. However, earlier this month, the department used UPI transaction data to track around 14,000 unregistered traders, many of whom had reportedly accepted payments beyond these limits. The department then issued notices to these traders, in some cases demanding tax arrears dating back to 2021-22, with amounts going up to ₹40 lakh. The sudden enforcement action sparked widespread panic. Many traders immediately stopped accepting QR code-based payments and reverted to cash-only transactions, impacting the broader digital payments ecosystem in the city. In response, unregistered traders have formed a new forum under the Karnataka Karmika Parishat (KKP) and announced a two-day strike on July 23 and 24, followed by a statewide shop shutdown on July 25. They have also threatened to halt the sale of essential goods like milk, if their concerns remain unaddressed. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who also holds the finance portfolio, has stepped in to defuse the situation. He has assured protesting traders that the matter will be raised at the upcoming GST Council meeting. He has also directed the Commercial Taxes Department to engage with traders and resolve their concerns, leading to the rollout of the Know GST campaign. Among other leader, BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar has weighed in on the issue, pledging to take it up with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He emphasized the need to safeguard the interests of small-scale entrepreneurs amid the ongoing concerns. Chandigarh MC accelerates bioremediation to clear legacy waste

Chandigarh: The municipal corporation, Chandigarh, nears the completion of bioremediation of the third and final legacy waste dump at the Dadumajra dumpsite, as the civic body on Monday claimed to have processed 70-75% of the waste. The MC stated that, despite challenges, the project was accelerated with a 15 to 20-fold increase in deployed machinery and manpower. Since Chandigarh failed to achieve the 7-star ranking even after applying in this specific category for Swachh Survekshan and received just a 3-star rating under the Garbage Free City (GFC) category, the piled-up final or third legacy waste at the Daddumajra dump site was found to be the prime culprit for this. Although the MC is working to remove this garbage dump and work is ongoing at the site, there was a consistent delay in the work and multiple breaches of the deadlines were witnessed in the past. While justifying its efforts in this regard, the MC on Monday said that this final or third waste mound, comprising approximately 2.40 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of legacy waste, is being cleared with support from two major public sector undertakings (PSUs) and the existing agency, operating in two dedicated shifts to ensure rapid progress. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The completion of this bioremediation effort marks the end of landfill dependency for Chandigarh, a transformative step towards sustainable urban living. "As per the report of July 21 (Monday) till 5 pm, only 59,000 metric tonnes of legacy waste remain to be processed in the final dump," the MC claimed through an official release. Box: There were a total of three major dumps of legacy waste, piled up over many decades at the Daddumajra dumping site due to the non-processing of the waste earlier. This entire exercise of removal of legacy waste started around seven years ago, and the first work to remove the first dump of the legacy waste was inaugurated by the then governor of Punjab and Chandigarh administrator, V P Singh Badnore, in Dec 2019.
