Fluminense shock Inter to reach Club World Cup quarter-finals

PA Media/dpa London Fluminense pulled off a major shock as they scored early and late to secure a 2-0 win over Inter Milan and book a spot in the Club World Cup quarter-finals at a baking Charlotte. German Cano put Fluminense ahead within three minutes, albeit fortuitously after the ball had kindly fallen to him from a deflected cross, but the Brazilian side went toe-to-toe with the Champions League finalists for much of the contest played in sweltering temperatures. Lautaro Martinez hit a post for Inter but both goalkeepers were tested before Hercules, who was introduced on the hour mark, struck deep into stoppage time to secure victory for Fluminense. After downing the Serie A giants, Fluminense's reward is a clash against either Premier League side Manchester City or Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal in Orlando on Friday. Fluminense pressed from the off and Yann Sommer was almost caught out in the first few seconds by Stefan de Vrij's miscued back pass, with the Swiss just about whipping off the onrushing Cano's toes. Inter failed to heed the warning and found themselves 1-0 down as Jhon Arias' cross ricocheted off Alessandro Bastoni and the ball ballooned to the unmarked Cano, who nutmegged Sommer with his header. Federico Dimarco tested Fluminense's 44-year-old goalkeeper Fabio to get down low to save with a first-time shot, while Matteo Darmian was fouled just outside the penalty box as Inter went up in gear. But at the other end, Arias' curling effort was pushed away by Sommer before Samuel Xavier sprayed the rebound wide, while Cano headed into an empty net only to be flagged for offside before half-time. It was Fluminense who first threatened upon the resumption, with another curling effort from distance from the busy Arias forcing an outstretched Sommer to fingertip round a post. Despite the heat-sapping conditions, Inter started to show more urgency in the final half hour, with Martinez cushioning a header down for De Vrij, who skewed wide from inside the six-yard area. Dimarco's free-kick whistled past the post with Fabio struggling to cover, but the Fluminense custodian denied Sebastiano Esposito's first-time effort with his feet before Martinez was then denied by a post. Lima was off-target after a quick Fluminense break but Hercules' cool finish in the third minute of added-on time settled matters to send their supporters at the Bank of America Stadium into raptures. A throw-in was only half cleared by Inter and fell into the path of Hercules, who ran on the diagonal before nervelessly slotting low across a helpless Sommer from just outside the area. Inter were once again denied by the goalframe following Dimarco's shot from the edge of the box but it mattered little as Fluminense celebrated a historic win.

Manchester City knocked out of CWC as Al Hilal snatch 4-3 win

PA Media/dpa London Manchester City crashed out of the Club World Cup as Al Hilal snatched a stunning 4-3 victory in extra time of a pulsating last-16 clash in Orlando, Florida. Marcos Leonardo grabbed his second goal with 112 minutes on the clock as the Saudi Arabian side produced a major upset. Bernardo Silva gave City a ninth-minute lead but Pep Guardiola's side were punished for missing a series of chances as Leonardo and Malcom replied after the break. Erling Haaland sent the game to extra time but City needed another equalizer from Phil Foden after Kalidou Koulibaly headed Al Hilal back ahead. City, who were caught repeatedly on the break, were undone again as Leonardo had the final say and the Saudi side will now play Fluminense for a place in the semi-finals. Guardiola, having taken the competition seriously, will rue a wasteful first-half display. His side started quickly with Ruben Dias heading straight at Yassine Bounou. The opening goal soon came, although it proved highly controversial with complaints of handball against Rayan Ait-Nouri and Ilkay Gundogan. Tijjani Reijnders cleverly played in Ait-Nouri but the ball appeared to brush the Algerian's hand before he crossed. It then took two ricochets, the second off the shoulder of Gundogan, before Silva poked past Bounou. Al Hilal players surrounded referee Jesus Valenzuela but the Venezuelan was unmoved. City should have extended their lead before half-time but Bounou denied Savinho, Gundogan, Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku. Silva had a shot parried but, after riding their luck, Al Hilal went close through Leonardo and Malcom. City failed to heed those warnings and were punished as Al Hilal struck twice in the first seven minutes of the second half. The equalizer came as former City full-back João Cancelo drove in a low cross. Ederson pushed away and Malcom's attempt on the rebound was blocked but the ball looped up for Leonardo to head in. City were stung again moments later as Al Hilal quickly recycled the ball from a corner they were defending. Malcom broke from halfway and buried a low shot into the far corner. City needed to respond and did so as a Silva corner led to a goalmouth scramble. Haaland pounced from close range to level but, far from settling nerves, the Premier League side remained vulnerable. Malcom was brought down by Dias for what seemed a certain penalty only for an offside flag to spare City. It also took a good recovery tackle by Manuel Akanji to prevent Malcom getting in another shot and Mohamed Kanno fluffed a free header. City were inches away as Akanji headed against the post and Haaland's follow-up was cleared off the line. Both sides had further attacks and Doku was pulled back seconds before the final whistle was blown. Guardiola raced onto the field to complain but the game was heading to extra time. City, who lost Haaland to injury, were stunned when Al Hilal reclaimed the lead with Koulibaly's powerful header. Yet the drama was far from over as Foden, having come off the bench to replace another substitute in the ineffective Rodri, exquisitely volleyed in from a Rayan Cherki cross. Al Hilal refused to lie down and scored yet again as Leonardo pounced to settle the contest after Ederson had pushed away a header from Sergej Milinkovic-Savie.

Dortmund's Kovac doesn't share Chelsea coach criticism on CWC

dpa Atlanta, Georgia Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac does not share the sharp criticism by Chelsea helmsman Enzo Maresca on some aspects of the Club World Cup. 'You can't do anything about the weather. We have climate change. It affects all of us. We all have to deal with it,' Kovac said ahead of Tuesday night's last 16 match against Mexican side Monterrey. Maresca had questioned whether the United States were the right host of the tournament, and next year's World Cup, after Chelsea's last 16 match with Benfica was stopped for two hours due to a storm warning. Several other matches have seen similar interruptions, and others were played in extreme heat. Kovac voiced understanding about the frustration over the delays but said that safety comes first. The coach also said he considers the tournament 'great' and spoke of big enthusiasm especially among the smaller non-European teams. However, he named too high ticket prices as one reason for many empty seats at the event, with Dortmund's last group match against Ulsan HD attended by just around 8,000 fans. Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl struck a similar note in an interview with Germany's Süddeutsche Zeitung as he criticised ticket prices as well as mid-day and early afternoon kick-off times. 'If matches are played at noon or 3pm you have to get the people so excited that they leave their workplace. They have to take time off. You can encourage that with a sensible ticket pricing policy,' Kehl said. In team news, Kovac said that Dortmund will be without Carney Chukwuemeka due to illness against Monterrey, while Julian Brandt does not require surgery on a wrist fracture.
