Broadcom's Semiconductor Solutions Accelerate: What Lies Ahead?
Broadcom 's AVGO semiconductor solutions segment is gaining momentum. In the second quarter of fiscal 2025, semiconductor revenues surged to $8.4 billion, up 17% year over year, driven by its booming AI-semiconductor business, which jumped 46% to $4.4 billion. This marks nine consecutive quarters of strong AI chip growth, positioning the company as a key player in next-generation AI infrastructure through custom silicon and networking chips.
Strong demand for Broadcom's high-value offerings is translating into healthier margins. The semiconductor solutions segment's gross margin rose to 69%, up 140 basis points (bps) year over year, while its operating margin reached 57%, an expansion of 200 bps. These results highlight the strength of the company's product mix, especially in custom AI silicon and advanced networking chips.
Much of the growth is being driven by hyperscale customers, who rely on Broadcom's custom ASICs and Ethernet-based networking solutions to scale AI workloads. Remarkably, the company's new Tomahawk 6 Ethernet switch and AI-optimized ASICs/XPUs have gained early traction across top data center clients. Broadcom expects third-quarter fiscal 2025 AI-semiconductor revenues of $5.1 billion.
Broadcom Faces Stiff Competition
Broadcom is facing stiff competition from the likes of Advanced Micro Devices AMD and NVIDIA NVDA.
AMD is becoming a strong competitor to Broadcom in the AI and data center chip market with its high-performance EPYC CPUs and Instinct GPUs. AMD's acquisition of Xilinx expanded its reach into embedded markets, adding FPGAs, Adaptive SoCs and ACAP products to its portfolio, boosting its versatility in AI and computing applications.
NVIDIA dominates the semiconductor industry through its leadership in GPUs for AI, machine learning and high-performance computing. NVIDIA's new Blackwell chip series strengthens this position, as major cloud providers increasingly rely on NVIDIA GPUs for AI training and inference. NVIDIA holds a key edge with its CUDA software platform and proprietary AI models.

Why Northern Trust Stock Zoomed 11% Higher This Week
Very often, when a publicly traded company is the focus of takeover interest, investors are attracted to its stock. That was the case earlier this week when a media report stated that banking conglomerate Northern Trust (NASDAQ: NTRS) had been approached by a potential suitor. That juiced its shares, which, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence, ended the week more than 11% higher in price. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » An apparent suitor On Sunday, The Wall Street Journal broke the news that Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE: BK) indicated to Northern Trust that it desired a merger with the smaller banking group. This quickly made its way to the highest levels of management, as according to unnamed "people familiar with the matter," the CEOs of the two companies had at least one conversation on a potential deal. The newspaper's sources said the discussions didn't advance to talks of a specific offer. At the time, it reported that Mellon is mulling its next move. This might indeed result in a formal offer being made. While the Journal used the word "merger" in writing about a potential deal, in all likelihood, any sort of arrangement would be more of an acquisition by Mellon. Given that, it won't be a cheap purchase. Northern Trust's market cap is over $24 billion, which would mean a hefty price tag, even at a modest premium. An unfolding saga worth following Neither Northern Trust nor Mellon has yet publicly commented on the report, and I wouldn't expect them to if talks are indeed at an early stage. I'd imagine any premium paid will be somewhat generous, given Mellon's apparent eagerness to bulk up with an already-sizable asset. This story is well worth monitoring for shareholders of both banks. Should you invest $1,000 in Northern Trust right now? Before you buy stock in Northern Trust, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Northern Trust wasn't one of them. What the National Hockey League's CBA extension means for Canada's teams
The National Hockey League and NHL Players' Association have decided to give labour peace another chance. Article content Before the first round of the NHL draft was held Friday night at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, commissioner Gary Bettman and Marty Walsh, the executive director of the union, held a news conference to announce a four-year extension of the collective bargaining agreement. Article content Article content Article content The deal needs to be ratified by the NHL's board of governors and the members of the NHLPA. The players will begin voting next week, and the board of governors saw most of the details during a meeting last Wednesday in Los Angeles. Article content The current agreement will expire in Sept. 2026. The new deal ensures members of the NHL and the fans that there is no chance of labour uncertainty until 2030. The NHL has had several work stoppages, including the 2004-05 lockout that wiped out the whole season. Article content The most recent lockout was in 2012-13. Article content 'This was a very thorough, constructive and professional process, and I think that bodes very well for the future of the game and the relationship between the players and the league going forward again, while we have an understanding and agreement,' Bettman said on Friday. Article content Walsh echoed those sentiments. Article content 'The process for us now is to take this agreement to the entire membership for ratification; we're going to do that over the next week or so,' Walsh said. 'I'm happy with the process. Hopefully, the players will be happy with the outcome.' Article content So, what does this mean for hockey fans in Canada? Article content All teams will have to be cap-compliant for the playoffs, which will help even the playing field. Article content THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR Article content The cap will rise significantly over the next three seasons, which will make life more challenging for small-market teams in places such as Ottawa and Winnipeg in a league where the salaries are paid in U.S. dollars. Article content This year, teams can spend up to $95.5 million US, but in 2026-27, that number will rise to $104 million. It will go up to $113 million in 2027-28. Article content If Winnipeg and Ottawa want to spend up to the cap in 2027-29, it will cost the seven clubs north of the border $154 million in Canadian currency, based on the current exchange rate. Article content 'What we were trying to do was catch up after a number of years of a flat cap, and so we were trying to do that on an orderly basis,' Bettman said of releasing salary projections for three seasons. Article content 'Over the years, our projections have been pretty good, and while we can always agree to make adjustments if circumstances warrant, we think the projections that we made and the caps that we put in place for the next three years are where they should be.'

250 CN Tower workers could go on strike before Canada Day as contract talks stall
The CN Tower is pictured in Toronto, Wednesday, June 26, 2019. The CN Tower opened 43 years ago today THE CANADIAN PRESS/Colin Perkel More than 200 CN Tower workers could begin job action as soon as Monday, which could disrupt operations on Canada Day. In a statement on Friday, Unifor, which represents the 250 full-time and part-time workers at Toronto's iconic landmark, said negotiations had reached a standstill. The deadline to reach a deal and avoid a strike or lockout is at 12:01 a.m. on Monday. 'We've hit an impasse and time is running out,' said Shan Ramanathan, president of Unifor Local 4271. 'Our members want a fair deal. We're ready to bargain, but the company needs to return to the table with a serious commitment to reaching an agreement.' According to the union, the lack of pension improvements and the need for fair wage increases are among the key issues at the bargaining table. Union members include hosts, waitstaff, bartenders, chefs, cooks, and butchers. A spokesperson for the CN Tower said in a statement that it presented its best offer on Thursday, but the union 'chose not to respond.' Both sides have been in talks since April. The spokesperson noted that in the event of a labour disruption, the tower's observation levels, EdgeWalk, and the shop would remain open, but food and beverages would be unavailable. 'We remain hopeful that a labour disruption can be avoided through respectful and reasonable negotiation,' the statement read. The CN Tower is owned by Canada Lands Company, a Crown corporation.
