Mum of deceased Papar student recalls final moments with her only child

The Stara day ago
KOTA KINABALU: Just hours before going back to her school hostel, Zara Qairina Mahathir made French toast for her parents.
Little did they know that it would be the last meal she would ever cook for them.
With teary eyes, Zara's mother, Ustazah Noraidah Lamat, recalled how her 13-year-old daughter, their only child, behaved differently that day.
Zara had come home for the weekend, as she often did since choosing to live in the school dormitory in February.

Noraidah, who teaches at a local primary school, said her daughter told her, "Mama, I'll go back late on Sunday."
This puzzled her, as students were expected to return before the 3.30pm hostel curfew.
'I normally drive her back at around 11am, so we would arrive between 1pm and 2pm. But that day, she insisted on going back later. I reminded her to obey the hostel rules,' said the 45-year-old.

Zara, a Form One student at a fully residential school in Papar, was found unconscious beneath her dormitory block at around 3am on Wednesday (July 16), with severe injuries.
She was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu but was pronounced dead the following night.
Speaking from her home in Kampung Kalamauh, Mesapol, about 141km from here, Noraidah said Zara had never made any specific complaints about the school.
However, they had previously talked about the social environment at the school, which Noraidah believes warrants further attention from the authorities.
She declined to comment further but expressed hope that the case would be investigated transparently and fairly, with nothing concealed.

'I have gone to the police station twice to give my full cooperation. I cannot say more, as the investigation is ongoing,' she said.
Noraidah shared that Zara's decision to stay in the hostel was entirely her own.
Inspired by her mother's experience in a hostel, Zara wanted to become more independent, just like her peers.
'She admired me and often imagined how exciting hostel life would be. She frequently said she wanted to be a badar (a member of the school's religious and spiritual committee).
'Zara moved into the hostel on Feb 18. I missed her terribly. My heart was never at ease. But I respected her decision and her wish to stand on her own two feet,' said Noraidah.
In the month leading up to her death, Zara had repeatedly asked her mother to make her favourite dessert, kuih batik, to share with her friends.
'She asked for it several times. I made a large batch and divided it into three containers, one for her, one for her friends, and one for her roommates,' said Noraidah, wiping away tears.
Although devastated by the loss, she said she has found peace in believing that her daughter passed away while pursuing her dreams and aspirations.
On Sunday (July 19), Noraidah received a visit from the Ziarah Rahmah outreach programme, led by Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif and Yayasan Sabah Director Datuk Seri Gulamhaidar Khan Bahadar.
The tragedy has been widely discussed on social media, with netizens calling for action from both state and federal leaders, while allegations of bullying have been raised.
Police are still investigating the incident.

Ukraine arrests top cybercrime forum admin with French-Europol aid

PARIS: A key administrator of a prominent Russian-language cybercrime forum, has been detained in Ukraine through a joint operation involving French law enforcement and Europol. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed the arrest on Wednesday, marking a significant breakthrough in a long-running investigation. Industry analysts identify as one of the most enduring dark web platforms. Laure Beccuau, Paris public prosecutor, stated, 'On Tuesday July 22, a person suspected of being the administrator of the Russian-language cybercrime forum was arrested as part of a criminal investigation opened by the Paris public prosecutor's office.' The forum, operational since 2013, served as a central marketplace for cybercriminal activities. Beccuau noted, 'Active since 2013, this forum was one of the main hubs for global cybercrime,' facilitating transactions involving malware, compromised system access, stolen data, and ransomware services. Investigators uncovered that also hosted an encrypted Jabber messaging server, enabling anonymous communication among cybercriminals. The probe began in July 2021 before being escalated to investigating magistrates by November that year. Beccuau added, 'A judicial investigation was opened on November 9, 2021 on charges of complicity in attacks on an automated data processing system, organised extortion, and criminal conspiracy.' Intercepted communications exposed extensive illegal operations, with profits estimated at over $7 million. The arrest was executed by Ukrainian authorities with support from French investigators and Europol. This operation highlights growing cross-border collaboration against cybercrime as attacks on public and private entities surge. - AFP

State Department accuses EU of Orwellian censorship

The US government agency says the blocs online content-moderation policies violate free speech The EU's online content regulations are an affront to free speech, the US State Department has said in response to France's praise for the Digital Services Act (DSA). The State Department echoed earlier criticism from US Vice President J.D. Vance, who accused EU member states of attempting to quash dissenting voices and stigmatize popular right-wing parties such as Alternative for Germany (AfD). "In Europe, thousands are being convicted for the crime of criticizing their own governments. This Orwellian message won't fool the United States. Censorship is not freedom," the State Department wrote on X on Tuesday. "All the DSA protects is European leaders from their own people." Earlier this month, France's mission to the UN promoted the DSA on X, stating, "In Europe, one is free to speak, not free to spread illegal content." Passed in 2022, the DSA mandates that online platforms remove "illegal and harmful" content and combat "the spread of disinformation," according to the European Commission. Critics in both the US and Europe have likened the regulations to the creation of a bloc-wide "ministry of truth." Earlier this year, prosecutors in Paris launched an investigation into Elon Musk's platform X, on suspicion that it was being used to meddle in French politics and spread hateful messages. The company dismissed the probe as "politically motivated." In 2024, French authorities detained Russian-born tech entrepreneur Pavel Durov on charges that he had allowed his Telegram messaging app to be used for criminal activities. Durov, who was later released on bail, denied any wrongdoing and accused France of waging "a crusade" against free speech. He also claimed that French intelligence officials attempted to pressure him into censoring content during Romania's 2024 presidential election. France's foreign intelligence agency, the DGSE, confirmed that it had "reminded" Durov of his responsibility to police content, but denied allegations of election interference. (
