Traditional and digital media should not be at ‘war,' says social media star Anas Bukhash

DUBAI: Traditional and digital media should not be at war, social media star, podcast host and entrepreneur Anas Bukhash has told the World Governments Summit in Dubai.
During a session called 'How to build a social media empire in Dubai' he explained: 'I think it (traditional and digital media) should be a marriage and a good marriage, not a miserable marriage. If you have a good marriage … and they talk to each other nicely, it's the most powerful combination rather than having either-or.'
He added he established his social media success by being consistent.
'I think a lot of things have to align, considering your consistency, your effort, your skill. All of it has to come together for you to be successful. And we've been doing it for ... we haven't missed a Tuesday I think in like five years or six,' he said.
With more than 2 million subscribers, Bukhash's show, AB Talks, is one of the most popular channels in the Arab world.
'When I presented my concept to some social media platforms, when I wanted to start back in 2014, everybody told me not to do it. Every platform told me nobody would watch it. It's too long. Because at the time no Arabic interviews were long form,' he explained.
Bukhash said he valued longevity over virality in all his projects.
'Every startup I've done, I just do it well and I do it consistently and then suddenly it blows up. And I think people respect that more than somebody who just got viral because of one interview or one clip,' he added.
After studying mechanical engineering, Bukhash decided he wanted to branch out into other areas. He says he enjoys wearing many different hats rather than being stuck on one path.
'I've always looked at things and thought, how can I make it better or solve a problem for people? It's funny how a mechanical engineer has an interview show, a hair salon, a cafe, a social media agency. But that's the beauty of us as people. I always say, how can you sell something if you don't believe it? You have to believe it,' he said.
'God made you so multi-dimensional. You just made yourself one dimension, but you were never born in one dimension. I love the fact that I can be one example of someone who can do a few things although I study something irrelevant.'
Bukhash said social media could be a powerful tool to help with storytelling and show people what was happening around the world — especially in recent times.
'In the US, young people have seen the tragedy and the conflict in Gaza in a way they were never able to see several years ago … You don't have to be from a certain country to see what happens in Gaza, what happens in Lebanon, what happens in so many countries. You just have to be human to know that something is off,' he said.

By showcasing the fascinating artworks of participating artists, the award celebrates their artistic legacy, enriches the regional art scene, as well as encourages dialogue around contemporary Arab art. Crucially, the award is open to individual artists and creative collectives aged 18 and above, including Arab artists and those residing in Arab countries. This year, the award is accepting both new and previously submitted works until October 16. Submissions should mirror the artist's ongoing practice and research. Saudi Arabia's Ithra launches open call for $100,000 art prize

DHAHRAN: Artists across the region are invited to apply for the Ithra Art Prize, with $100,000 up for grabs and the chance to have their work displayed at one of the Middle East's leading cultural institutions. The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) announced the open call for the seventh edition, with the head of the museum calling it one of area's 'most generous and influential' art grants. Artists from across the Arab world can submit their proposals via the Ithra website, with a deadline of Oct. 16. This edition will also, for the first time, recognize five finalists with production grants. Their work, along with the winning commission, will be exhibited at Ithra's headquarters in spring 2026. Launched in 2017, the prize initially focused on Saudi and Saudi-based artists but was expanded in its fourth edition to include contemporary artists of Arab heritage across 22 countries. Farah Abushullaih, Ithra's head of museum, told Arab News it served as 'an open invitation to artists to speak in their own voice.' She said: 'We're looking for proposals that reflect depth, authenticity and a clear vision. What stands out is work that is intellectually grounded and emotionally resonant.' Both new commissions and re-contextualized existing works are accepted, provided they are closely linked to the artist's ongoing research and creative trajectory. Applicants must be aged 18 or older and of Arab heritage or residing in one of the 22 Arab countries. Both individual artists and collectives may apply. 'The prize is about expanding the region's cultural conversations through bold, original ideas. Ithra is committed to supporting them every step of the way, from conception to creation and beyond,' said Abushullaih. The Ithra Art Prize has played a pivotal role in advancing contemporary art from the region since its inception. Past winners have displayed their works at leading cultural events including Art Dubai, the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale and the AlUla Arts Festival. Abushullaih said: 'Ithra continually evolves its programs to reflect the changing artistic landscape and needs of the Kingdom and the region. In the case of the Ithra Art Prize, this goes beyond funding; we offer a platform for dialogue, critical thinking and meaningful cultural exchange.' She added sustaining this impact was an ongoing commitment. 'It requires long-term investment in artists' development, authentic community engagement and creating opportunities for works to resonate, both locally and globally. We want Ithra to be a meeting place for cultures to interact, share, and grow,' she said. Looking ahead, Ithra is already in discussions to present the winner's work beyond Dhahran. 'Partnerships and collaborations have always been central to how we develop our programs and extend the reach of the artists we support,' said Abushullaih. 'We are in dialogue with institutions based in Saudi Arabia and internationally to explore ways for the seventh edition of the prize to be seen by a wider audience and experienced in new contexts beyond Ithra.'

Hogan is dead, but Hulkamania lives on

The news hit like a steel chair to the soul. On July 24, 2025, Terry Gene Bollea — the man the world knew as Hulk Hogan — passed away at his home in Clearwater, Florida, following a cardiac arrest. He was 71. While tributes poured in from across the US, few outside the region may realize the profound impact Hogan had on the Arab world — a place where Hulkamania was not just a pop culture phenomenon, but a childhood rite of passage. Born on Aug. 11, 1953, Hogan's rise to fame in the 1980s coincided with a time when American entertainment was beginning to seep into global consciousness. Long before satellite television or the internet's broadband revolution, a handful of American icons became unofficial ambassadors of 'Brand America.' Sylvester Stallone, Michael Jackson, and perhaps more than any of them, Hulk Hogan — with his bandana, handlebar mustache and booming charisma — became a household name from Riyadh to Rabat. In Saudi Arabia, Tuesday nights were sacred. Families gathered around their televisions to watch recorded World Wrestling Federation matches. Schoolchildren were allowed to stay up late, and living rooms erupted with excitement the moment Hogan's entrance music blared: 'I am a real American, I fight for the rights of every man.' It was not just a theme song — it was a declaration. Hogan was the hero who stood tall against the villains of the ring, and by extension, the world. He took on wrestling's most notorious 'baddies' — from the sumo-sized Yokozuna to the Machiavellian 'Million Dollar Man' Ted DiBiase, the monstrous Andre the Giant, and the flamboyant Ric Flair. But Hogan was not just a wrestler; he was a symbol. And when the Gulf War erupted in 1990, that symbol took on new meaning. As American forces mobilized to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation, many Arab children — raised on Hogan's battles against evil — saw him as a real-life Superman. WWE even introduced characters such as Sgt. Slaughter, who controversially turned heel by aligning with Iraq, setting the stage for Hogan to once again embody the American savior at WrestleMania VII. As American forces mobilized to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in 1990, many Arab children — raised on Hulk Hogan's battles against evil — saw him as a real-life Superman. Faisal J. In 1994, he shocked the wrestling world by defecting from WWF to its rival, World Championship Wrestling. Two years later, he did the unthinkable; he turned heel — wrestling jargon for becoming a villain. As 'Hollywood Hogan,' he led the New World Order, a faction that redefined wrestling's narrative and helped WCW to dominate the ratings during the infamous Monday Night Wars. Even in his final year, Hogan remained relevant. On July 18, 2024, just days after Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, Hogan took the stage at the Republican National Convention. Ripping off his shirt to reveal a Trump-Vance tee, he declared: 'Let Trumpmania run wild, brother!' For Hogan, it was not just politics — it was personal. 'When I saw him stand up with that fist in the air and the blood on his face — as a warrior, as a leader — I realized that's what America needs,' he told Fox News. Hogan's legacy is golden — forged in the squared circle, polished on the silver screen, and etched into the hearts of millions. He starred in films such as 'Rocky III,' 'Suburban Commando,' and 'Mr. Nanny,' and even had his own reality show, 'Hogan Knows Best.' But his greatest role was always as the immortal Hulkster — the man who taught generations to train hard, say their prayers, and eat their vitamins.
