Shohei Ohtani throws fastest pitch of career at 101.7 mph in 3rd mound start for Dodgers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sbohei Ohtani threw the fastest pitch of his career at 101.7 mph and worked two efficient innings in his third mound start for the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing one hit and one walk against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.
It was the first start of more than one inning this season for the two-way superstar, who is working as an opener as he eases his way back into pitching.
The three-time MVP did not pitch last season, his first with the Dodgers, while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He made 86 mound starts over five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, going 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA.
On Saturday, Ohtani threw first-pitch strikes to all seven batters he faced and finished with 27 pitches, 20 for strikes.
He allowed a one-out single to Bobby Witt Jr. in the first and walked Maikel Garcia before throwing the 101.7 mph fastball on an 0-2 count to Vinnie Pasquantino, who grounded into a double play.
Ohtani retired the side in order in the second, fanning rookie Jac Caglianone on an 89 mph slider.
The 30-year-old has 29 homers this season as Los Angeles' primary designated hitter.

Bonmatí came down with a fever during practice Friday and later checked in to a Madrid hospital. Stability after Rubiales scandal Bonmatí's setback aside, Spain had been enjoying some peace and stability now that the Luis Rubiales scandal is behind them. Spain is arriving for Euro 2025 just a few months after Rubiales was convicted of sexual assault for an unsolicited kiss on player Jenni Hermoso during the 2023 World Cup awards ceremony. The conviction helped end one of the worst chapters in the history of Spanish soccer. The kiss sparked outrage and marred the nation's celebrations of the team's first major title in women's soccer. It ignited an unprecedented crisis that left the Spanish federation and women's soccer in turmoil. Spanish society called for more support for women, and sports officials ultimately were forced to review outdated protocols and improve the conditions for the women's team that is among the main title favorites at Euro 2025. 'I remember when I used to come to play for the national team and I didn't enjoy it. I just wanted to go home, to be honest,' playmaker Bonmatí, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, said a few days before falling ill. 'It was tough to play here. The situation wasn't good. But now everything is better, there is more stability for everyone and that benefits the group.' The crisis prompted by the kiss on Hermoso — who was not called up by Tomé for the Euro 2025 squad — helped expedite changes that players had been demanding for a long time, including by some who refused to play for the national team even before the World Cup. 'The conditions have changed a lot,' said Putellas, another two-time world player of the year. 'Especially in terms of travel, nutrition, training. Things have changed radically. Now we are enjoying conditions that are at the top level of the men's team. It's something that has taken a lot of effort and work by many people.' Putellas said it's clear that the structure provided for the women's team is much more professional now, including in areas such as marketing and communication. Tomé left out Hermoso from the squad saying that 'there's a lot of competition in her position.' Spain established itself as one of the powerhouses in women's soccer by winning the World Cup and following it up by lifting the trophy of the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. Germany's new stars have a post-Popp point to prove at Euro 2025
BERLIN (AP) — Germany has unfinished business at the Women's European Championship after losing the final of the previous edition and following up with a shock group-stage exit at the 2023 Women's World Cup. Inspirational captain Alexandra Popp has left since those disappointments, leaving it up to a new generation of young stars to restore Germany's reputation as the most successful team in European women's soccer. Two-time world champion Germany has won eight of the 13 European Championship tournaments played so far, including six in a row from 1995-2013. But it hasn't won any major titles since. Germany looked poised to end that barren run when it faced England in the 2022 final, but Popp injured herself in the warmup and the team was already without Bayern Munich forward Klara Bühl because of a COVID-19 infection. England won 2-1 after extra time. The 2023 World Cup provided another opportunity. But a loss to Colombia followed by 1-1 draw with South Korea meant Popp's team failed to emerge from Group H – the first time Germany failed to reach the quarterfinals at a Women's World Cup. 'Times have changed,' Germany coach Christian Wück said. 'Everything has become closer, the other countries have become very strong, maybe even overtaken us. For us it's a big challenge and also a great honor that we can even challenge for the title at a European Championship.' Lando Norris targets a much-needed win from pole at the Austrian Grand Prix
SPIELBERG, Austria (AP) — Lando Norris is targeting a win to boost his Formula 1 title hopes Sunday after qualifying on pole for the Austrian Grand Prix, his first race since colliding with teammate Oscar Piastri in Canada. Norris was fastest by more than half a second in qualifying Saturday in a dominant display which seemed to come as a relief to the British driver, who's often struggled to show his best pace in qualifying this year. Charles Leclerc starts second for Ferrari, with teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth after an unexpectedly competitive day for the Italian team. Piastri leads Norris by 22 points in the standings and will be right behind his teammate on the grid after the Australian qualified third.
