Milwaukee potholes; city works to address ongoing problem

Yahoo23-05-2025
The Brief
Milwaukee DPW officials are working to fix potholes across the city.
Crews say how busy the street is and how hazardous the pothole is will determine the response time.
It's an issue Milwaukee drivers know all too well.
MILWAUKEE - A roller coaster ride – that's how some drivers said they feel when navigating Milwaukee's potholes.
Right now, patching crews are working on fixing the streets.
What we know
The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works (DPW) said at this time of year, response time is slower. But they are bringing in other city staff to help.

Waldemar Rivera's National Auto Tech & Towing is in a convenient spot, depending on how you look at it. His shop is surrounded by potholes near 7th and National.
"There are cars you see, they hit one, their tire goes," Rivera said. "The holes just sink. And they are making big potholes."
He said he gets roughly 10 customers a month dealing with pothole damage.
Dig deeper
DPW crews are in full swing, filling about 100 potholes a day.
Street services manager Tom Wangerin said because there was less freezing and thawing this winter into spring, requests for pothole fixes are down almost 40%.
"We're sitting in a much better place when it comes to our backlog and keeping up with the influx of requests," Wangerin said.
There have been approximately 3,200 pothole requests this year, per the DPW. Last year at this time, that number was around 5,200.
At 5th and Mitchell, crews patched up an entire block of potholes on Thursday morning.
Crews say how busy the street is and how hazardous the pothole is will determine the response time.
"We're averaging about 4.5 days to close out a service request," Wangerin said. "Weekday overtime right now is in full swing."
What you can do
Back at Rivera's shop, he encourages you to keep your car in good condition, so pothole patches don't cause more bumps in your road.
"Invest in the cars to keep good parts on it," he said. "Because if it has a weak part and hits a pothole, it is just going to go."

If you have car damage from a pothole in the city, you can file a claim at the clerk's office.
Those are reviewed case-by-case.
The city is encouraging residents to report potholes, either through the city's mobile app or by calling 414-286-CITY (2489).

Arizona weather forecast: Extreme Heat Warning begins in Phoenix

The Brief Our Extreme Heat Warning begins on Sunday, with an emphasis on Monday's temperatures. Sunday through Tuesday is expected to reach more than 110 degrees in the Phoenix area. PHOENIX - Our Excessive Heat Warning has officially begun with a major heat risk impacting the Valley through Tuesday. What we know Temperatures on Sunday topped 114, which is 7 degrees above normal. Tonight we can expect overnight lows dropping to around 87 degrees. Monday will be the warmest day under the excessive heat with a high close to 116 degrees. There will be a high risk of heat-related illnesses including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Make sure to stay hydrated and avoid exposure to the sun during peak heat. Monsoon Moisture Approaches Temperatures will eventually cool down to below-average readings as we get closer to the 4th of July when moisture begins to move in. Showers and thunderstorms are still forecast to move into the high country beginning on Tuesday. Shower chances remain highest on Thursday and potentially a chance of thunderstorms on Friday for the Valley. You can always check the latest weather conditions by visiting the FOX 10 Phoenix weather page, or download the Free FOX 10 Weather app, which is available on Apple iOS and Android. Scroll down this page for satellite and radar, day planner, records, current temperatures, 10-day forecast, forecast highs, and recent rainfall totals, plus live video feeds. The Arizona Department of Health Services stated the following precautions can be taken to prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke: Stay in air-conditioned buildings Find a cooling center/hydration station Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day (mid-day) Check on at-risk friends, family, and neighbors at least twice a day Drink water before, during, and after working or exercising outside Check the UV Index Check the heat risk map Call 511 anywhere in Arizona or 1-888-411-ROAD (7623) The Arizona Department of Transportation's tips for driving in extreme temperatures include: Have sun protection: In addition to an umbrella, take sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat and wear loose-fitting, light-colored cotton clothing. Fuel up: Keep your tank at three-quarters full. Running out of gas, especially in a remote location, is dangerous in extreme heat. Hydrate: Take a cooler to keep extra drinking water cold, and consider adding several frozen bottles of water to use for cooling off or to thaw and drink if needed. Make sure everyone, including pets, stays hydrated. Get help: If your vehicle breaks down in extreme heat, call for assistance right away to reduce wait time, and run the AC. If the AC isn't working, roll down all windows. Wait safely: If the temperature inside your vehicle becomes too hot, everyone, including pets, should exit carefully and seek out or create a shaded area as far away from the travel lanes as possible. Be careful walking on the road surface, which can be hot enough to burn skin. Keep your shoes on and try to keep your pets' paws off the pavement. If you are stopped along the highway, raise the front hood and turn on hazard lights. Please keep in mind that parking in tall brush can start a fire. Check your vehicle: You can help avoid breakdowns and blowouts by making sure your vehicle is in good operating condition. Check your air conditioner and coolant levels, top off any vital engine fluids and make sure your battery is up to par. Check your tire pressure, as the combination of under inflated tires and hot pavement can lead to a blowout. MORE:

These are the 5 weather apps I recommend, but one of them stands out from the rest

Ryan Haines / Android Authority It's safe to say that more or less every Android user has a weather app installed on their phone. I certainly do, and I use it daily to check the weather, not only for today but for the rest of the week as well — it's part of my morning routine. In my search for the perfect weather app, I tried countless options and can tell you there are significant differences between them. Some were loaded with ads and pop-ups, while others were poorly designed. Then there were the ones that weren't very accurate for my location, and some even managed to bundle all these issues into one. Eventually, I found a few weather apps I genuinely liked and can now recommend to others. Here are my top five. Which of these weather apps do you prefer? 0 votes Pixel Weather NaN % Weather and Radar NaN % Today Weather NaN % Wunderground NaN % Ventusky NaN % Other (let me know in the comments) NaN % Pixel Weather Joe Maring / Android Authority This is my favorite by far, but it's Pixel-exclusive, so it's not something everyone can download and use. I haven't seen any ads pop up in the app — at least for now — and the design is beautiful. I get all the information I need on one page, including an hourly report and a 10-day forecast. I can also see how much rain (if any) to expect during the day, wind speed and direction, the UV index, air quality, and a lot more. Most of this data is useful to me, and I can customize its arrangement on the screen, placing less interesting information at the bottom. Then there's the weather map. It gets the job done, but it's probably my least favorite aspect of this app. It's not as accurate or good to use as some of the others I've tried, so I don't tend to use it as much as I'd like. Whenever I need to check the weather map, I switch to the next app on this list. Weather & Radar Mitja Rutnik / Android Authority This app is far from perfect. While it provides most of the data I need, the user interface could use a bit of polish. There are also too many ads scattered throughout the app, and it includes a news section that shows weather news for locations far away from me. However, I still use it for one crucial reason: the weather map. After trying a multitude of apps, this one works best for my location. I can see exactly when rain will hit, and more importantly, if hail is coming. We tend to get a lot of hail during the summer months, and I always need to stay alert to ensure I park my car in the garage on time, as hail can cause serious damage. It's also great for snow, as I can check the estimated time and amount of snowfall, or when heavy snow that's preventing me from going outside will stop. Today Weather Mitja Rutnik / Android Authority I used this app before switching to Pixel Weather and was genuinely fond of it. It's gorgeous — simple and clean, with subtle animations and a pop of color to give it life. I particularly like the image at the top, which displays what the sky looks like in a specific location. This is followed by all the weather details I need, some of which are nicely presented in grey squares, including information like humidity, visibility, and UV index. There's an hourly and weekly forecast, air quality information, a decent weather radar, and all the other details you'd expect from an app like this. It does have an ad section, but the ads are well-integrated into the design, so they're not as obtrusive as with some competitors. Besides, outside of something like Pixel Weather and a few others, it's hard to find a free app that doesn't have ads. Weather Underground Mitja Rutnik / Android Authority Not quite as simple as Today Weather, but still straightforward enough with a great design. I used it for a bit and liked seeing all the main data I needed on one screen, although I did need an extra tap to get to specific info like the UV index. I really appreciate the animation for the temperature, and the weather radar is decent. I also like that features like news and videos require an extra tap to view, so they don't clutter the main screen like with some other apps. There are also important notifications that appear at the top of the app, warning users of excessive heat, heavy rainfall, and similar conditions in the area. The app is free, and I haven't encountered any ads during my time with it, but there's a premium version available that offers more detailed weather data. Ventusky Mitja Rutnik / Android Authority This app is a bit different because it places the weather map front and center. You can quickly switch it from showing temperatures to rainfall or other data with just a tap or two. There's a quick weather forecast at the bottom of the screen that also shows how the weather on the radar will change when you switch between days or hours. It's pretty neat. Of course, the app also has all the standard features like a full weather report for the upcoming week, possible rainfall, wind speed, and more. However, you generally get more data with rival apps, so this one is really meant for those who enjoy looking at detailed weather maps. The app is free, but a premium version is available. However, it doesn't offer a lot more than the free version, so I'd recommend sticking with the free option. These are the top five weather apps I've used and enjoyed, although there are plenty of others out there that I haven't tested yet. Let me know which ones you use and why in the comments.

This is one of those items that you feel really isn't needed, and you buy it on impulse, but then when you receive it, you instantly see the difference it makes in your organization in the car. The charging speed is fast, and I love the functionality and design.' —Alex Thorn'Great/must have charger! Amazing product, very easy to use! And the product's ability to fast charge my phone takes it above and beyond just being a great charger!' —Jonathan V.'I have a couple of Galaxy phones that all use USB-C, so this charger with the retractable USB-C cable is a nice clutter saver. Easy to use and functions as advertised. Build quality seems like any other car charger; if it fails on me, I'll update this review. Fits into my car just fine, no issues. If you have a passenger or a second device to charge, they give you an extra USB-A and USB-C port as well, which is convenient. I have several LISEN products and they are generally fairly solid, priced reasonably.' —Customer Review'Bought this for my daughter's car, which has a ridiculously awkwardly placed charging port, and I LOVE this thing. Most chargers stick out too far and end up in the way, especially if the port is near the gear shift. This retractable charger solves that completely. It's compact, low-profile, and stays out of the way, which makes a huge difference in her small car. The retractable cord design is genius. You can pull out just what you need, and it retracts smoothly when you're done—no mess, no tangles. It's especially handy in tight spots or if you want to keep things tidy on road trips. The charger locks in place well, and even on bumpy roads, it doesn't lose the connection or wiggle loose. Best cord is not like a treasure hunt. Charging performance is solid. The built-in USB-C cable fast-charges newer iPhones and Androids with no problem, and the extra USB-C and USB-A ports are great for charging a second phone or accessories at the same time. I tested it with my iPhone 16 Pro Max and got consistent, fast charging speeds. It also just feels well-built — sturdy, but not bulky. The rotating head makes it easier to position the charger where it won't interfere with anything, and the vintage bronze finish looks better than most plain plastic options. If you're dealing with a weird port location or just want something that doesn't clutter the console, this is hands-down the best car charger I've come across. It's well thought out, works great, and keeps everything clean and organized.' —Christopher Kouzios Get it from Amazon for $14.98 (originally $24.98).
