In an irony that perfectly sums up the chaos following the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge collapse in Vadodara district , authorities trying to keep people safe ended up trapping their own rescue vehicles.A hastily built brick barrier, intended to block access to the collapsed bridge, has now left official equipment stuck on the wrong side—and in need of a rescue plan themselves. On Sunday, district officials constructed a three-foot brick wall at the Padra approach of the damaged bridge. The idea was simple: stop unsuspecting motorists—especially those blindly following GPS directions—from driving onto the broken span at night.Their concerns were not without basis. In recent years, several tragic incidents have occurred across India where drivers, unaware of closures, plunged off collapsed or incomplete bridges. But in their rush to finish the barrier, workers forgot to move two rescue vehicles and a mast light that were still parked past the construction line. Locals reportedly tried to warn officials before the wall was sealed off, but by then it was too late.'The administration managed to trap its own rescue convoy,' one villager remarked to TOI. 'This is exactly how our systems function—even after such a disaster.'Now, the authorities will have to partially demolish the new wall, retrieve the stranded vehicles, and build the barrier all over again. A similar blockade is planned for the opposite approach to prevent further mishaps. The bridge, built four decades ago near Gambhira village to connect Anand and Vadodara districts, collapsed on July 9, sending multiple vehicles into the Mahisagar river The death toll climbed to 20 within the next few days.Recognising the urgent need to restore connectivity, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel approved the construction of a parallel two-lane bridge. The project, estimated at Rs 212 crore, aims to replace the critical link between central Gujarat and Saurashtra within 18 months.According to state officials, the new bridge will come up near Mujpur and include significant upgrades:Superintending Engineer N.V. Rathva of the Roads and Buildings Department confirmed that administrative clearance has been granted and detailed project reports are ready. In the meantime, authorities are grappling with the aftermath of the collapse—and the unintended comedy of trapping their own rescue teams behind a wall meant to keep everyone out.

Walkways to lights, Noida's Transport Nagar Chowk set for a facelift

Noida: The Authority has sanctioned a Rs 4-crore beautification project for Transport Nagar Chowk in Sector 67, following the success of its first model road from Shashi Chowk to Noida City Centre. The space has been designed by Orionn Architects. The project will transform a 500-metre stretch along DS Road into a safe, accessible, and visually appealing public space. It will feature tree-lined pedestrian walkways, landscaped greenery, decorative lighting, sculptures, benches, bollards, and ramps for differently-abled access. A proper drainage system will be installed within the green belt, and kiosks will be set up near the roundabout. Rainwater harvesting will also be incorporated to divert water toward the ground rather than into sewage drains. She added that the design focuses on universal accessibility, featuring ramps, tactile flooring for the visually impaired, and smart road infrastructure such as energy-efficient lights and safe pedestrian crossings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo This initiative follows the Authority's pilot project, also designed by Orionn, where a 1.2km stretch from Shashi Chowk near Golf Course metro station to Noida City Centre was revamped into a model road. That project, costing Rs 4 crore, included walkways, sculptures, benches, smart poles with panic buttons, mobile charging points, bus bays, and WiFi zones. It drew inspiration from global cities like Singapore, London, and New York. Building on the positive response to the model road, the Authority decided to replicate the concept in other parts of the city, starting with Sector 67. "A tender was floated, and many companies have submitted their bids. The Authority is now in the process of finalising the agency that will be engaged in the project," said DGM (civil) Vijay Kumar Rawal, adding that this is the latest step in Noida Authority's ongoing efforts to make its public spaces greener, safer, and more accessible.

Bengaluru–Chennai expressway: Cars to pay Rs 185-190 one-way on Karnataka stretch

Bengaluru: Car and jeep users using the newly built Karnataka stretch of the Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway travelling from Hedigenabele (near Hoskote) to Sundarapalya (near KGF) will soon have to pay Rs 185 for a single journey and Rs 275 for a round trip. In the opposite direction — from Sundarapalya to Hedigenabele — the toll is slightly higher: Rs 190 for a single trip and Rs 280 for a round trip. This comes as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) finalised toll charges for the 71km section connecting Hoskote and KGF (Bethamangala), which has been unofficially open to traffic for over seven months. Tolls will be charged based on distance, with four plazas located at Hedigenabele, Agrahara, Krishnarajapura, and Sundarapalya. From Sundarapalya to Hedigenabele, the rates will be Rs 305 for a single journey and Rs 455 for a round trip. For larger vehicles such as trucks and buses, the toll from Hedigenabele to Sundarapalya is Rs 620 for a single trip and Rs 930 for a round trip. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo In the reverse direction, the toll is Rs 635 and Rs 955. Monthly passes for cars cost Rs 6,105 (50 trips) in one direction and Rs 6,260 in the reverse. While the expressway's smooth surface and high-speed limits (up to 120 kmph) have appealed to regular commuters, the toll charges could dampen their enthusiasm. A senior NHAI official said toll collection will begin shortly after system integration and coordination with the district administration. Since the road opened unofficially, violations have raised red flags, particularly the unauthorised entry of two-wheelers, which are banned. Incidents of bikes sneaking through incomplete boundary walls have led to accidents, prompting the NHAI to seek permission to deploy home guards at toll plazas and vulnerable spots. "Two-wheeler riders have been entering through gaps in the fencing. This is a serious safety risk. We've asked for clearance to station home guards until the boundary wall is fully built," the official said. The expressway's use is expected to dip once toll collection begins, but officials are optimistic it will still offer value to commuters seeking faster access to eastern Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. To improve last-mile connectivity, NHAI has released funds to upgrade village and district roads, linking Sundarapalya to the Bengaluru–Kolar Expressway via Mulbagal. Meanwhile, motorists continue to urge the authorities to address traffic bottlenecks between KR Pura and Hoskote—an unresolved stretch that often negates the time saved on the high-speed expressway. "You zip through to KGF but get stuck for 40 minutes at KR Pura," said a regular commuter. "Fixing that needs to come first." —— For Graphic: How much you have to pay Vehicle type Hoskote to KGF KGF to Hoskote Single Return journey Single Return journey Cars/jeep 185 275 190 280 LCV/LGV/minibus 295 445 305 455 Truck/bus 620 930 635 955 Source: NHAI
