Senators laud armed forces' victory over India
The senators on Friday lauded Pakistan's armed forces for giving a befitting response to enemy's aggression and condemned the "fascist and expansionist agenda" pursued by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The house, which met here with presiding officer Sherry Rehman in the chair, continued discussion on the ongoing tensions with India. During the session, Senator Dinesh Kumar, who belongs to the Hindu community, announced Rs5 million donation for the families of the martyrs.
At the outset of the session, Opposition Leader Shibli Faraz from the PTI complained against the ruling party lawmakers. He said that the session had been called to discuss the Indian aggression, but some senators spoke against PTI leader.
PML-N parliamentary leader Irfan Siddiqui, while responding to Faraz's objection, said that no one should talk about any leader. He told the house that on three occasions during the Thursday's session, he stopped the senators from speaking against anyone.
"Yesterday, I told my party member that we cannot talk on May 9, let's talk only on May 10. It is not appropriate for us to insult leaders in the House," he said. Siddiqui said India was an enemy of democracy. "Modi has shown the Indian people's nefarious designs of attacking Pakistan."
He praised the people for maintaining unity. "Pakistan's forces gave a befitting reply to the enemy and India is left wondering how its planes were shot down. The most positive aspect of India's aggression and Pakistan's glorious victory is that we and the opposition are on the same page."
Participating in a debate Senator Ali Zafar said that the recent Indian aggression had once again proven that Pakistan remained resilient, united and fully capable of defending its sovereignty against any form of aggression.
"China stood by us, and even neutral states began to question India's narrative and acknowledged Pakistan's responsible behaviour," he added. He proposed a joint parliamentary committee to monitor water issues and ensure national preparedness in future conflicts.
Nasir Abbas said that Modi was a fascist leader and the 'butcher of Gujarat', whose politics were rooted in hatred and bigotry. "His failed attempts to crush the Kashmiri people and provoke regional conflict have backfired," he said. (WITH INPUT FROM APP)

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secured six out of 11 Senate seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as voting in Senate elections concluded on Monday amid intense political negotiations and a seat-sharing arrangement between the ruling party and the opposition, Aaj News reported. According to unconfirmed and unofficial results, PTI-backed candidates won four of the seven general seats, while the opposition clinched the remaining three. The election saw a total of 22 candidates vying for 11 seats; seven general, two technocrat, and two reserved for women. Despite efforts by the PTI leadership to unite its ranks, internal rifts persisted. While some disgruntled candidates stepped down following negotiations, Khurram Zeeshan remained in the race. The voting took place at the KP Assembly's Jirga Hall, which was declared the official polling station by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), with two booths set up for the process.

Indian court frees 12 in 2006 Mumbai train bombings

(AFP/File) An Indian court acquitted on Monday 12 men previously convicted for a series of bomb blasts that ripped through packed commuter trains in Mumbai in 2006 that killed 187 people. The men were convicted in 2015 of murder, conspiracy, and waging war against the country over the attacks during the evening rush hour of July 11, 2006 that also injured more than 800 people. Five were sentenced to death, while the other seven were given life imprisonment. But, 10 years later, the Bombay High Court set aside a lower court's verdict and acquitted the 12 men. Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak said in their judgment, the prosecution had 'utterly failed to establish the offense beyond the reasonable doubt against the accused on each count.' The men were ordered to be released from jail 'if they are not required to be detained in any other case.' The prosecution can appeal against the order in the Supreme Court. Prosecutors said the devices were assembled in Mumbai and deliberately placed in first-class coaches to target the city's wealthy Gujarati community. They said the bombings were intended as revenge for the riots in the western state of Gujarat in 2002, which left some 2,000 people dead, most of them Muslims. Prosecutors accused Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba of being behind the attacks, although a little-known outfit called the Lashkar-e-Qahhar later claimed responsibility. Pakistan denied the allegations.

Court issues arrest warrants for K-P CM Ali Amin Gandapur
A local court in Islamabad on Monday issued arrest warrants for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur in a case involving recovery of liquor and illegal weapons. The warrants were issued by Judicial Magistrate Mubashir Hassan Chishti after Gandapur failed to appear in court. The court dismissed his plea for exemption from personal appearance and directed authorities to arrest and produce him at the next hearing. The court adjourned the hearing until 22 July. Earlier on Saturday, the magistrate issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Gandapur and ordered the relevant station house officer (SHO) to ensure his production. Although the prosecution completed recording witness statements in May 2024, Gandapur has yet to submit his own statement under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The case dates back to October 2016, when Islamabad police claimed they had recovered five Kalashnikov assault rifles, a pistol, six magazines, a bulletproof vest, a bottle of alcohol, and three tear gas shells from a vehicle belonging to the PTI leader parked outside Bani Gala. Gandapur has consistently denied the allegations, stating that he was travelling with two licensed Kalashnikov rifles and that a valid arms licence was present in the vehicle. As for the alleged liquor recovery, he asserted that the bottle in question actually contained honey, not alcohol.
