Digha's Jagannath Dham opens, Mamata prays for ‘global peace'
Located around 350 kilometres from the Puri Temple, the newly constructed Jagannath Dham in Digha is built on a sprawling 24-acre plot, with an investment of nearly Rs 250 crore.
The temple's consecration ceremony unfolded amid religious rituals and cultural performances, while sanctified water from various revered pilgrimage sites across the country was brought to Digha for rituals and the anointing of the deities involved 108 diverse materials. Following this, the devotees got their first glimpse of Lord Jagannath, enshrined within the temple's 'Garbhagriha'.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, visibly moved by the spiritual atmosphere, performed the aarati, invoking the blessings of Lord Jagannath upon 'Ma, Mati, Manush' – her cherished representation of the people of Bengal.
'May the soil of Bengal be blessed by the touch of the feet of the Lord, Lord Sri Sri Jagannathdev,' CM Banerjee prayed, wishing for global peace.
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister thanked the artisans, engineers, and workers who dedicated three years to realising this monumental project. 'I would like to thank all those who have come here for the inaugural programme. People from all religions have come here,' she said.
Mamata Banerjee dedicated the new Jagannath Dham to 'Maa-Mati-Manush,' and expressed hope that, 'In the coming years, the temple would evolve as a major pilgrimage site.'
CM Banerjee had on Tuesday said, 'Today when they (priests) asked me about my gotra, I told them I do not use my own gotra while offering puja. I offer puja using the 'Ma Mati Manush' gotra. I want them (Ma, Mati and Manush) to remain happy.'
Meanwhile, the CM is planning to hold an annual 'Ratha Yatra' in Digha, further solidifying the town's emergence as a significant pilgrimage and tourism hub.
Political leaders, prominent figures from West Bengal's music and film industry alongside spiritual leaders from Puri's Jagannath Temple, ISKCON, Adyapeath Mandir, Dakshineswar, and Belur Math, as well as those representing various faiths were also present at the inauguration.
The Digha Dham showcases the traditional Kalinga architectural style. Built using red sandstone, sourced from Bansi Paharpur from Rajasthan, the structure incorporates key features like the — Singhadwar, Byaghradwar, Hastidwar, and Ashwadwar — welcoming devotees from all directions.
The temple complex houses a dedicated shrine for Goddess Lakshmi and a Bhogshala, where sacred offerings will be prepared for Lord Jagannath.
'I had planned my visit to Digha in advance,…when I came here it was totally transformed. Today we also got darshan of Jagannath, it reminded me of my Puri trip..,' said one of the devotees Purnima Das Choudhury.

"Security personnel might have broken the room door assuming that she might be alive and needed immediate medical care. Alignment concerns delay Vizhinjam-Navaikulam outer ring road project
Thiruvananthapuram: The outer ring road project from Vizhinjam to Navaikulam in the state capital is set to be delayed. Union road transport minister stated in Parliament that the current alignment has serious design flaws and was now under review. As a result, the alignment was being re-examined in coordination with the state govt to reduce environmental impact. Originally pitched at 62.7km with an estimated construction cost of Rs 8,000 crore, the project is to be built and managed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), under Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme. Affected landowners, many of whom surrendered their land documents to the revenue department over two years ago, have been left in limbo, waiting for compensation. Even after project approval, compensation is only due once final alignment and clearances are endorsed by the competent authority, a move the MP calls 'a grave injustice'. Compensation delays stem partly from stalled environmental clearance: the southern sector (Vizhinjam to Thekkada) received clearance in 2023, but the northern section (Thekkada to Navaikulam) remains legally blocked after a May 16, 2025, Supreme Court ruling annulled post-facto green clearance provisions. The State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) term also lapsed in March and the authority has shifted to the central ministry, further delaying approvals. Punjab vigilance raids realtor hours after he joins BJP; political vendetta, says leader
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) Saturday conducted searches at three premises linked to real estate developer and former Akali leader Ranjit Singh Gill in Chandigarh's Sector 2, barely 12 hours after he was inducted into the BJP by Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini. Gill and and the BJP strongly condemned the action, accusing the AAP government of indulging in 'political vendetta'. The Vigilance Bureau, however, claimed to have uncovered details of suspicious financial transactions running into crores between Gillco Developers — the Mohali-based realty firm founded by Gill — and entities linked with Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia who is currently in jail after being arrested in a disproportionate assets case. Gill was the 'halka in-charge' of Kharar for the Akali Dal till he quit the party in July. He was widely tipped to join AAP, especially after ruling party's Kharar MLA, Anmol Gagan Maan, announced her resignation and decision to quit politics on July 19. However, she took back her resignation the very next day. A senior vigilance official said that the searches at Gill's residence was in furtherance of the investigations into an FIR (No. 22, dated June 25) registered at Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) Police Station Flying Squad, SAS Nagar, against Majithia. The official added that searches were carried out three premises linked to Gillco Developers in Punjab and Chandigarh. 'During the searches, the Bureau uncovered details of suspicious financial transactions running into crores between Gillco Developers and entities linked with Majithia. Further investigations are ongoing,' the official said. Majithia was held on June 25. According to the FIR registered by the Vigilance Bureau, its preliminary investigation has revealed that more than Rs 540 crore worth of 'drug money' was laundered in several ways and Majithia had allegedly facilitated it. The official added that after registration of FIR against Majithia, certain suspicious financial links and transactions between Gillco Developers and some of the entities had come to notice. 'These were developed in a meticulous manner by conducting investigations. To conduct further in-depth inquiries into these transactions and to gather relevant evidence, the Vigilance Bureau conducted these searches in accordance with procedure established by law,' the official said. Bureau officials said several incriminating documents, electronic devices and other evidences have been seized in the ongoing searches. An official spokesperson said that the search operations were conducted strictly in accordance with the legal procedures and the search was still underway. 'Electronic devices and relevant documents were also seized during the searches', he added.
