BBMP to launch daily feeding programme for stray dogs in Bengaluru
A tender worth around Rs 2.8 crore has been issued to implement the programme across BBMP's eight zones. Each zone is expected to cover between 400 and 500 street dogs.
Special Commissioner Suralkar Vikas Kishore confirmed that an action plan has been submitted to the BBMP Commissioner and is awaiting approval. Once approved, the tendering process will begin. The quantity of food will be based on veterinary recommendations, with each dog receiving a meal containing 700 to 750 calories.
'We have already submitted the action plan to the commissioner. After approval, the tender process will begin. After that, the amount of food prescribed by our veterinarian will be given to the dogs,' said Suralkar Vikas Kishore.
The BBMP stated that the move follows a recent rise in dog bite incidents. 'Stray dogs cannot attack people because they are full,' said Suralkar, linking the feeding initiative to efforts aimed at reducing aggression in stray animals.
Pilot trials have already been conducted in some wards. As per the plan, each stray dog will be fed once a day at a cost of Rs 22.42 per dog, he added.
The move suggests that the bidders must operate a kitchen within BBMP limits and are responsible for preparing and distributing food, cleaning the feeding areas, and submitting reports.
Bengaluru is estimated to have around 2.8 lakh stray dogs. The current initiative will cover only about 2 per cent of this population. BBMP officials said further decisions on expanding the programme will be taken based on the outcomes of the initial rollout.
On Tuesday, Municipal employees from corporations across Karnataka staged a symbolic strike against the State government seeking fulfilment of various demands.
Employees of the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike), along with staff from various municipal corporations across the state, took leave from work to participate in the protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru.
Among the list of demands of the employees are the withdrawal of the Logsafe attendance system, the filling of 6,000 vacant posts and an end to the 'Suspend employees for silly reasons.' They are also demanding a reduction in the number of marshals on duty and promotions for engineers based on seniority, among others. (ANI)

Fire on diesel-laden goods train doused after seven hours, 18 wagons gutted
Chennai: A massive fire that broke out in a diesel-laden goods train near Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu was fully extinguished after nearly seven hours of intense firefighting on Sunday. The blaze, which erupted around 5.30 a.m., gutted 18 wagons and caused major disruptions on the busy Chennai-Arakkonam rail route. The train was carrying 12.6 lakh litres of diesel in 18 tanker wagons, each loaded with 70,000 litres of fuel. All 18 wagons were completely destroyed in the fire, resulting in a loss of diesel worth approximately Rs 12 crore. Dramatic visuals from the site showed the tankers reduced to a row of charred remains. Southern Railway, in a press release, said the fire is believed to have originated in the third wagon as the train was pulling out of Tiruvallur station. The loco pilot responded by applying emergency brakes, and the station master immediately cut off the overhead electric power. However, the flames spread rapidly up to the 19th wagon, leading to derailments and extensive damage. Railway officials confirmed that the unaffected 30 wagons and the locomotive were safely detached and moved to a secure location. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident. Train operations were severely impacted, with at least 12 trains running to and from Chennai Central either cancelled or short-terminated, while several others were diverted. Stranded passengers were accommodated on alternative transport arranged by the authorities, including Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses. Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh visited the accident site and reviewed ongoing restoration efforts. The DOWN line towards Bengaluru and Mangaluru via Jolarpettai is expected to be restored soon, officials said. Meanwhile, three special investigation teams led by the Additional Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have been constituted to probe the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary assessments are focused on possible technical faults or lapses in safety procedures during fuel transport. The incident has raised serious concerns over the handling of hazardous materials on Indian Railways, prompting calls for a review of safety protocols.
