
Penrod's Beach Club Comes Back to Miami Beach For One Day Only
The tribute will take place at Nikki Beach Miami Beach, the globally recognized destination founded by the late Jack Penrod. This isn't just a nostalgic party, it's a celebration of legacy. A look back at the original beach club that helped transform a fading South Beach into the world-renowned destination it is today. In the 80s, Jack Penrod launched his beachfront operation in Fort Lauderdale, where his original Penrod's Beach Club became legendary for its high-energy spring break crowds, MTV appearances, and larger-than-life atmosphere. At the same time, Miami Beach was in steep decline. Crime was rampant, South of 5th was rundown, and the city's glamour had all but vanished. That's when the mayor approached Jack with a bold request: bring that energy and vision to Miami Beach.
After committing a $4 million investment and an ambitious marketing plan to help revitalize the area, Jack was granted a 40-year lease by the City of Miami Beach for the prime stretch of sand at the southern tip of the city, along with beach management rights from 1st to 15th Street. He accepted the opportunity, and what followed was a complete reimagining of South Beach's potential. Palm trees were brought in by the truckload, beach scenes were staged with vintage convertibles and bikini runway tours, and construction began on a three-story, 35,000-square-foot venue at 1 Ocean Drive.
Jack and Lucia worked side by side to bring the venue to life. After moving to Miami from Nicaragua, Lucia made her mark managing the successful Jockey Club before joining Jack on the project that would redefine South Beach. Together, they created a new kind of destination that brought people together through fun, hospitality, and larger-than-life experiences.
But in 1997, everything changed. Jack's 18-year-old daughter, Nicole, was killed by a drunk driver. In her honor, Jack and Lucia filled the empty land south of Penrod's to create a peaceful space now called Nikki Beach. That moment marked a shift, not just in design, but in purpose.
'We opened Nikki Beach in 1997,' Lucia says. 'And in a way, we ended one club to start another. That's what Nikki Beach was born. Every detail was designed with Nicole in mind. It became a place to celebrate life.'
With white sunbeds, flowing fabrics, global music, and organic textures, Nikki Beach introduced what the world would come to define as a 'French-style beach club in the American way.' This new approach resonated instantly.
Over the years, Nikki Beach evolved into a global lifestyle brand rooted in the spirit of Celebrating Life. The vision quickly expanded to include dining, entertainment, fashion, film, and art. The brand now includes beach clubs, resorts, residences, and special events in 14 countries around the world. And at its heart, it remains family-owned and deeply personal.
'We've had team members with us for 10, 15, even 20 years,' Lucia shares. 'That kind of loyalty is rare in this industry. Our team is family, and they carry the Penrod's spirit of bringing joy to the world.'
Following Jack's passing earlier this year at the age of 85, the upcoming July 4th tribute at Nikki Beach Miami Beach has morphed into a powerful full-circle moment. 'We wanted to honor Jack in the place where it all began,' Lucia says. 'This is more than a nostalgic event. It's a celebration of his legacy and the joy he brought to so many lives.'
Guests can expect an immersive experience that channels the spirit of the original Penrod's. There will be beach volleyball, throwback music from the 80s and 90s, and a special menu bringing back fan favorites like All American Cheeseburger, Crispy Conch Fritters, Smoked Fish Dip, and Key Lime Pie. Classic cocktails like the Penrod's Rum Punch and Frozen Coconut Piña Colada will also be available.
'These dishes are memories,' Lucia says. 'We wanted to bring that feeling back. That sense of carefree, sun-soaked celebration.'
What makes the moment even more special is the generational connection that continues to grow. 'We see people who partied at Penrod's in the 80s and 90s now coming back to Nikki Beach with their kids, or even their grandkids, for Sunday brunch,' she says. 'It's full circle. We've become part of family traditions, and that's something I'm incredibly proud of.'
As Nikki Beach looks to the future, the brand continues to grow. New resort sites are currently in development across the Caribbean, Asia, and the Middle East, and plans for future full-scale lifestyle destinations that bring together beach clubs, wellness, dining, music, art, and retail are already underway.
The group is also expanding creatively with the launch of Lucia, a new restaurant concept that brings a different side to the hospitality landscape: 'Nikki Beach is 'lots more,'' Lucia concludes. 'Lucia is 'more is more.'' It's bold, citrusy, and unapologetically maximalist.'
Sourcing local produce and bold ingredients is key to the menu, Lucia is due to unveil it in Cannes in 2024. This summer, the experience expands to Marbella with Lucia Summer Club, a vibrant seasonal preview ahead of the full resort experience opening in 2026.
'Still, July 4th is about returning to where it all started — and sharing the magic people experienced Miami Beach,' Lucia says. 'It was the spark for everything that followed. And for one day, we get to bring that magic back.'

Ninety trade deals in 90 days didn't happen early in President Donald Trump's second term. 'Liberation Day' panicked the financial markets in April. And bespoke trade agreements with dozens of countries, he has said, takes too much time. 'There's 200 countries,'' the president acknowledged. 'You can't talk to all of them.'' So Trump repackaged his plan to slap tariffs on almost every nation in a series of unusual presidential letters to foreign leaders that set new thresholds not just for trade negotiations — but also for diplomatic style, tone and delivery. Most are fill-in-the-blank form letters that include leaders' names and a tariff rate. Words are capitalized using Trump's distinct social media style. A few typos and formatting issues appear throughout. They generally include an opening flourish of salutation, a grievance, the threat of a big jump in tariffs, a new deadline and an escape ramp allowing that 'we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter' if certain conditions are met. Rather than typical diplomatic talk of things like enduring mutual respect, Trump closes with, 'Thank you for your attention to this matter!' and 'Best wishes,' followed by his signature of three long strokes linked by and about 14 short ones. He appears to have paid special attention to his letters to Canada , with which he's been fighting and taunting for months, and Brazil , which he singled out for 50% tariffs apparently based on a personal grudge rather than economics. A negotiation tactic The good news for the leaders of foreign countries, Trump suggested, is that if he sent you a letter, he wants to negotiate. 'A letter means a deal,' he said during a Cabinet meeting. 'We can't meet with 200 countries.' But he's also managed to make his erratic trade policy baffling for American trading partners eager to negotiate a way to dodge his wrath. The president escalated a conflict he started with America's second-biggest trading partner and longstanding ally, raising the tariff — effectively a tax — on many Canadian imports to 35% effective Aug. 1. On Saturday, Trump announced more tariffs still, this time on two of the United States' biggest trade partners: the European Union and Mexico , at 30% each. And it's far from clear that these tariffs would benefit Americans' bottom lines. Trump's threat to boost import taxes by 50% on Brazilian goods could drive up the cost of breakfast in the United States by making staples of the American diet, such as coffee and orange juice, more expensive. Reception has been ... spotty The response to the letters, which the White House says will also be mailed, has been mixed. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office issued a mild statement acknowledging the new Aug. 1 deadline and suggesting he would stay the course 'steadfastly defend(ing) our workers and businesses.' A TikTok trend from a few years back has resurfaced with countless creators poking fun at its execution. The trend, known as the "Bugatti Challenge," features people sitting on the floor, pretending to drive a car as someone off camera pulls their feet to slide them out of the frame. Videos are set to Ace Hood's 2013 hit, "Bugatti," with the popular line, "I woke up in a new Bugatti." But the most-viewed videos in the trend are actually those that don't go quite right. One of these videos was posted by Austin Skovran and Tiffani Chance, known for her role in the reality television series, "Little Women: Dallas." In the TikTok video, Chance is seen wearing a helmet as she is wiped off camera by Skovran at lighting speed. But when its Skovran's turn, the two laugh as Chance struggles to pull him out of the frame quickly. "I knew that wasn't going to work," Skovran says, as Chance falls to the ground. This trend is now over ... can't be topped," on TikTok user commented on the video, which had more than 4.6 million views, as of July 14. And in some videos, the narrative is lost altogether, as pets are seen in frame before being yanked off screen. When did the 'Bugatti Challenge' start? The trend dates back to 2023. While the origin of the "Bugatti Challenge" is unclear, a video posted in March 2023 continues to surface on TikTok. In the video, with more than 16 million views as of July 14, a toddler is seen sitting on the floor before she is yanked off screen when the chorus, "I woke up in a new Bugatti" plays. "She's ok," the TikTok user wrote in the video's caption. What is a Bugatti? Bugatti is a French automobile manufacturer that specializes in luxury sports cars. The company was founded by Italian automobile designer Ettore Bugatti in 1909. To get an idea of the price, the 2026 Bugatti Tourbillon is estimated to cost around $4.6 million, according to automotive magazine Car and Driver. How Trump plans to dismantle the Education Department after Supreme Court ruling
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for the Trump administration to continue unwinding the Education Department, allowing it to move ahead with mass layoffs and a plan to outsource the department's operations to other agencies. The justices paused a lower court order that had halted nearly 1,400 layoffs and had called into question the legality of President Donald Trump's plan to dismantle the department. Now, Trump and his education secretary, Linda McMahon, are free to execute the layoffs and break up the department's work among other federal agencies. Trump had campaigned on closing the department, and McMahon has said the department has one "final mission' to turn over its power to the states. 'The U.S. Department of Education will now deliver on its mandate to restore excellence in American education,' McMahon said Monday in a statement. McMahon is expected to move quickly — department lawyers have already previewed the plans in court filings. What happens with student loans, civil rights cases Trump and McMahon have acknowledged only Congress has authority to close the Education Department fully, but both have suggested its core functions could be parceled out to different federal agencies. Among the most important decisions is where to put management of federal student loans, a $1.6 trillion portfolio affecting nearly 43 million borrowers. Trump in March suggested the Small Business Administration would take on federal student loans, but a June court filing indicated the Treasury Department is expected to take over the work. The Education Department said it had been negotiating a contract with Treasury but paused discussions when the court intervened. That work is now expected to proceed in coming days. Under a separate arrangement, nine Education Department workers already have been detailed to Treasury, according to court filing. The department had also recently struck a deal to outsource the management of several grant programs for workforce training and adult education to the Department of Labor. The Education Department agreed to send $2.6 billion to Labor to oversee grants, which are distributed to states to be passed down to schools and colleges. Combining workforce training programs at Education and Labor would 'provide a coordinated federal education and workforce system,' according to the agreement. Additional agreements are expected to follow with other agencies. At her Senate confirmation hearing, McMahon suggested that enforcement of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act could be handled by the Department of Health and Human Services. Civil rights work could be managed by the Justice Department, she said. Democracy Forward, which represents plaintiffs in the lawsuit, said it will pursue 'every legal option' to fight for children. 'No court in the nation — not even the Supreme Court — has found that what the administration is doing is lawful,' said Skye Perryman, president and CEO of the group, in a statement. Laying off staff Trump campaigned on a promise to close the agency, and in March ordered it to be wound down 'to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law.' McMahon had already started a dramatic downsizing, laying off about 1,400 workers. Education Department employees targeted by the layoffs have been on paid leave since March, according to a union that represents some of the agency's staff. The lower court order had prevented the department from fully terminating them, though none had been allowed to return to work, according to the American Federation of Government Employees Local 252. Without the lower court order, the workers would have been terminated in early June.
