American Teens' 4.8 Hours Per Day On Social Media Is Addictive, Destructive

It's staggering. American teens spend 30% of their waking lives – 4.8 hours per day – on social media platforms (assuming they sleep eight hours and that they spend 16 hours doing … stuff). This is based on data compiled by Gallup in 2023, the most recent data available.
What's so social about social media?
In a study published in JAMA, it was reported that this led to addictive behavior and, in the extreme, suicidal thoughts or even attempts. We could add a few behavior categories easily enough: sociopathic, psychopathic, obsessive, compulsive, and impulsive, to name a few. It is striking that none of these approaches social behavior like affiliative, interpersonal, or supportive.
U.S. daily averages (poll of polls) show universal usage across platforms, including 59 minutes on TikTok, 59 minutes on YouTube, 39 minutes on Facebook, 30 minutes on Snapchat, 32 minutes on X, 33 minutes on WhatsAp, and 33 minutes on Instagram.
What's going on here?
In 2013, I wrote a commentary piece called 'Obsession with Technology.' In it I cited G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936), the inimitable English writer, philosopher, poet, and journalist, who observed, 'We are perishing for lack of wonder, not for lack of wonders.'
One of the few characteristics human beings can claim as distinctly ours – separating us from all other species – is our capacity to wonder. We don't even have exclusivity in creating wonders, as certain species not only use tools but make them, proving the capacity to invent. But to wonder? Yes.
Why, then, do so many of us disengage from the process of wondering? That doesn't mean flipping over dazzling new technologies, but wondering at simple things: an idea, a melody, a theory, an opportunity, synergy, or fantasy.
The short answer is today's obsession with technology. The long answer requires us to follow that stream of thought.
So, let's be crystal clear. What is an obsession? It is a compulsive preoccupation with a fixed idea. Next question: what do we mean by preoccupation? To preoccupy is to dominate or engross the mind to the exclusion of other thoughts. Repeat: the exclusion of other thoughts.
Doesn't that put the 4.8 hours per day into perspective?
It may also go a long way in explaining why, in recent surveys, 54% of American teens replied that they'd like to have a career as an influencer.

Crews working there have been relocated to Whitehill. The Manchester branch of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) posted on Facebook on Tuesday saying: "Today Stockport fire station closed its doors for the last time. "Crews will be working from Whitehill station whilst the old station at Stockport is demolished and the new one is built. Firefighters and retired Firefighters came together this morning for the last ever parade." The new building is expected to be ready for firefighters to move into next September. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) insists there will be no reduction in the number of fire engines or firefighters during the rebuild, and say they are 'absolutely confident that we will continue to provide our excellent emergency response'. "Firefighters will continue their usual duties in and around Stockport's station area, including prevention activities, school visits and training," they added. Sarah Nattrass, Aassistant chief fire officer, said: 'Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service apologises for any delay residents have felt in us providing an update to our plans for Stockport fire station. "We understand that any visible change in our arrangements can bring uncertainties and worries. 'The state-of-the-art fire station is set to be delivered in Autumn next year and will provide the community with a modern, flexible, resilient fire and rescue service. 'A public consultation was first undertaken in Spring 2023 to make sure the plans developed were in tune with the needs of the local community. Further details and updates have been available on our website throughout the process. 'I also want to reassure residents that there will be no reduction in the amount of fire engines or firefighters in the area during the rebuild process, with crews moving to nearby Whitehill station. "This decision has been taken after extensive data analysis and we are absolutely confident that we will continue to provide our excellent emergency response both within the immediate area around Stockport King Street West Fire Station and across the wider borough of Stockport. 'I am committed to providing our local community opportunities to hear directly from us as the construction of the new community fire station, which will bring lasting benefits to the borough, progresses.'

A wildlife trust has said it is "deeply concerned" after traffic signs, road cones and rusty shopping trolleys were found in a river. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is urging the public to protect waterways after a large amount of debris was discovered in the River Biss in Trowbridge by staff from the town council. "Recently items such as roadworks cones, signs, shopping trolleys, baskets and various bottles and cans were discovered in the river," a council spokesperson said. It comes after the Environment Agency said earlier this year that rusty trolleys in the river could pose a "potential flood risk". Shopping trolleys and an office chair were also found dumped in the same part of the river last November. The Environment Agency is responsible for managing the River Biss alongside the town council. "Litter in watercourses isn't just a public nuisance, it can be a flood risk and bad for the environment," an Environment Agency spokesperson said. "If you spot rubbish which could cause a flood risk or pollution, please report it via our incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60." Wiltshire Wildlife Trust said rubbish in the river is not just an eyesore, but a symptom of a wider environmental issue. "Our rivers are corridors for nature, they are habitats for species that cannot live elsewhere such as the water vole, otter, and kingfisher, as well as a rich diversity of fish, insects, and plants," it said. "The presence of large-scale litter and fly-tipped items poses a direct threat to this wildlife through entanglement, physical injury, and the leaching of harmful pollutants that degrade water quality for years to come. "We urge the public to help us protect these precious habitats by ensuring all waste is disposed of responsibly and by reporting any incidents of fly-tipping to Wiltshire Council immediately." Charity marks 10 years of 'learning and creativity'

A charity which works with "those at the margins of society" was holding a series of events to mark its 10th anniversary. Ipswich Community Media (ICM), which runs language courses and a range of youth projects, was founded in 2015, with no funding or premises. Since then, the charity said it had connected with 60,000 people through workshops, events, and performances. Director Bruce MacGregor said: "This milestone is about more than what we've achieved; it's how we've done it: through participants, volunteers, staff, partnerships, passion, and trust." The charity celebrated with a town parade last week, with a music and food event set to run over the weekend. A parade through Ipswich town centre was held on Saturday, 21 June, accompanied by drummers and people wearing cultural dress. A birthday party with live music, dance and international food was planned to be held on the following Saturday at St Stephen's Church music venue. There was also an event to launch a new music video and EP created by South Street Kids - one of the ICM projects which engages 7-12 year olds, at the Eastern Angles Centre. ICM Connected, an online alumni network, was also being developed to mark the anniversary. ESOL Integration team manager and co-founder Linda Vines said: "It's a place where we bring people together, we empower them, they feel safe, they feel heard." Reflecting on the start of the charity, she told BBC Radio Suffolk: "There were nine of us. "We were made redundant from our previous employment, and we had a dream really. We started off with nothing, basically, and we were able to build." Initially, ICM was able to use a room inside the Ipswich Council for Racial Equality office, before moving youth projects into South Street Studios and language teaching into space on St Matthew's Street in 2019. "Gradually, we were able to secure some after 10 years, we have had over 2,000 learners who have come through the integration team," she said. Monika Puchala, who joined in 2016 and now works for ICM as a maternity project co-ordinator, said: "I started as a learner, then a volunteer as a community champion, and now I'm in my fourth year of working for ICM.
