India makes remarkable strides in green hydrogen development

Time of India21-05-2025
India has made remarkable strides in
green hydrogen development
, allocating 862,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) production capacity annually to 19 companies, and awarded 3,000 MW annual electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 firms, it was announced on Tuesday.
The country has also launched pilot projects in steel, mobility, and shipping sectors, informed
Santosh Kumar Sarangi
, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Speaking at the '
World Hydrogen Summit
2025' in Rotterdam, the
Netherlands
, he highlighted India's strategic vision and capabilities in the domain of renewable energy and
green hydrogen
production.
The Secretary highlighted that India has already installed over 223 GW of renewable energy — that includes 108 GW from solar and 51 GW from wind — placing India among the fastest-growing renewable energy markets globally.
He reiterated India's vision to achieve energy independence by 2047 and reach Net Zero emissions by 2070.
His address showcased that India's vision to not only meet its domestic demand but also become a major global exporter of green hydrogen by 2030 — contributing meaningfully to decarbonisation action.
To drive this transition, the National Green Hydrogen Mission was launched by the Government in 2023, with an initial allocation of $2.4 billion.
It lays out a comprehensive roadmap to identify and create demand in potential sectors, provide production incentives for setting up domestic capacity, achieve 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030, avert nearly 50 MMT of CO2 emissions annually, attract investments of about $100 billion and generate over 600,000 jobs.
The country recently launched the 'Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme'. Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia plants have been exempted from environmental clearance by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
To push this forward, three major ports -- Kandla, Paradip and Tuticorin ports -- have been identified by Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) to be developed as Green Hydrogen hubs.
Furthermore, 15 states have announced policies to support green hydrogen.

Govt mandates all rooftop solar inverters under PM scheme to connect to national servers

New Delhi: Rooftop solar inverters installed under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) will be required to mandatorily connect to national servers and use machine-to-machine (M2M) SIM-based communication protocol, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has said in a compliance order issued to all stakeholders. The PMSG: MBY scheme targets installation of rooftop solar (RTS) systems in one crore households with a total capacity of 30 gigawatts (GW). The ministry has said integration of such a large number of RTS plants introduces grid stability and cybersecurity challenges , especially due to inverters transmitting data outside India or interacting with third-party servers. 'To ensure secure and reliable data transmission, all inverter communication devices/dongles/data loggers deployed under the scheme shall have Machine-to-Machine (M2M) SIM communication protocol,' MNRE said in the memorandum dated July 21. The ministry added that inverter modules transmitting sensitive data to servers outside India threaten national energy sovereignty and increase the risk of unauthorised control. It further stated that third-party communication could be exploited to manipulate inverter operations, potentially disrupting power generation and grid operations. 'In this regard, multiple rounds of deliberation have been done with major stakeholders to implement a framework to track generation benefits of RTS installations as well as for the centralisation of RTS data on a National Software Platform hosted on servers located in India and managed by MNRE or any other Government Agency,' the ministry said. The MNRE is finalising a vendor-neutral open communication protocol along with security guidelines for data communication to enable real-time monitoring and control of inverters through the National Portal. Integration testing of inverter communication devices will commence from September 1, 2025. 'A separate communication in this regard shall be issued shortly,' the ministry said. Further, all Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) listed for supplying inverters under the scheme 'shall mandatorily connect their inverters directly to National Servers and Software managed by MNRE or any other agency designated by MNRE, with effective from the date to be notified,' it said.

From The Hindu, July 25, 1925: The new electric scheme

The total power that is now being generated at Sivasamudram is about 32,000 H.P., the whole of which has already been taken up. The demand for additional power likely to be required during the next three years including that for small industries, fans, and other domestic purposes works out to about 12,800 H.P. After a careful investigation of the various schemes for the generation of the additional power required, Government have sanctioned necessary estimates for a VIIth installation, providing for the generation of an additional 14,000 H.P. at Sivasamudram Generating Station at a total approximate cost of Rs. 45.5 lakhs.

India's energy transition gathers pace with focus on natural gas: CRF President

New Delhi: India is moving ahead with a strong and ambitious plan to reshape its energy future, with natural gas playing a key role in this journey, Shishir Priyadarshi, President, Chintan Research Foundation (CRF), said on Thursday. Speaking at an event organised by the CRF, Priyadarshi said that India aims to increase the share of gas in its energy mix from the current 7 per cent to 15 per cent by 2030. "The Government has formulated a very ambitious gas policy, the objective of which is to ensure that by 2030, gas contributes approximately 15 per cent to India's energy mix,' he stated. Calling this policy 'ambitious but essential,' Priyadarshi said natural gas will serve as a crucial bridge as India transitions from fossil fuels to cleaner, non-fossil energy sources. He noted that the country is currently at a significant turning point in its energy journey. 'India today stands at a very crucial inflection point. On one hand, we are aiming to become a developed nation by 2047 -- Viksit Bharat is not just a dream, but a national goal. On the other hand, we are equally committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070,' he said. He added that the idea for this event was conceived nearly two months ago to underline the growing importance of gas in India's clean energy roadmap. 'Its main objective is to highlight the fact that gas will be a very important component -- and a crucial bridge -- in India's transition from fossil to non-fossil fuels," he added. 'This event aims to highlight the importance of gas as a reliable and vital part of India's energy future,' Priyadarshi stated. With the government's continued push for cleaner fuels and sustainable growth, experts believe that natural gas will play a critical role in balancing energy needs and environmental responsibility.
