9 Missing After Uttarakhand Cloudburst, Char Dham Yatra Suspended
At least nine labourers are missing after a cloudburst triggered a landslide in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district early Sunday.
The cloudburst washed away a labourers' campsite, where 19 workers were staying, near an under-construction hotel in the Silai area along the Yamunotri National Highway, officials said. While 10 workers were rescued, nine went missing.

A senior official said they received information about the incident around 3 am.
"There is an under-construction hotel near Silai. Adjacent to it, a new landslide zone has developed where no such incident had occurred before -- it was considered a safe area," Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya said in a video statement.
"The rubble cascaded down near the hotel and hit the labourers' campsite," he said.
Multiple teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), its state counterpart, SDRF, and the police are involved in the rescue operations, Mr Arya said.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he is constantly in touch with the officials and prayed for everyone's safety.
Char Dham Yatra Suspended
Mr Arya also said the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand has been postponed for a day in light of heavy rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Uttarakhand for Sunday and Monday, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning at several isolated locations.
He also directed officials to curb the overcharging of food items.
The Char Dham Yatra, one of the most sacred pilgrimages in India, attracts lakhs of devotees every year. The journey follows a clockwise route through Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
Every year after Diwali, the doors of the Char Dhams are closed for devotees and reopen in April-May the following year.
During the six-month-long pilgrimage, lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad visit the Char Dhams.

The state recorded an average of 17 mm rainfall over the 24-hour period till Friday morning, with several districts reporting surplus rain — Pithoragarh recorded 40.4 mm (90% above normal), Udham Singh Nagar 30.6 mm (144% surplus), Bageshwar 105% above average, and Chamoli 80% above normal.

I think that's the kind of growth we continue to anticipate for the years to come, and hopefully even break that record," said Shweta Mantri, head of rider verticals at Uber India and South Asia, speaking on the sidelines of a company event in New Delhi on Thursday. Among the most travelled Intercity corridors over the past year were Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Agra, Bangalore–Mysore, Lucknow–Kanpur, and Ahmedabad–Vadodara—especially around long weekends and holidays. Fridays emerged as the most preferred departure day, with travellers choosing early morning hours or the mid-afternoon lull (2 PM–3 PM) to beat traffic. To further accelerate adoption of Intercity services, Uber announced the pilot of a premium offering—Motorhomes—in Delhi's National Capital Region. The one-month pilot, starting August 7, is aimed at travellers seeking luxury and comfort for short getaways. Bookings for Motorhomes will open on August 4 and can be made through the Uber Intercity or Uber Reserve options. The vehicle can accommodate four to five riders and comes equipped with premium amenities including a television, lavatory, microwave, and mini-refrigerator—effectively creating a private lounge-on-wheels. "Our objective is to bring this elevated experience to life for our consumers, see how the pilot goes, what the demand is, and other factors," said Mantri. She noted that given the nature of the offering, pricing will be higher than Uber's regular services. The pilot coincides with the onset of India's festive season and a string of long weekends—periods during which rider interest typically spikes. Uber expects strong demand around Diwali, Holi, Eid, and the summer wedding season. With Intercity travel on the rise and premium services being tested, Uber aims to enhance its platform with both scale and variety, catering to budget-conscious travellers and those seeking curated experiences.
