Manipur shuts down to mark 2 years of clashes, sees widespread public support
Markets, educational institutions, and private offices remained closed, while public transport stayed off the roads.
On May 3, 2023, ethnic violence broke out between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kuki-Zo groups, leaving 260 dead, 1,500 injured, and over 70,000 people displaced. Amid growing tensions, chief minister N Biren Singh resigned in February this year and Manipur was placed under President's Rule. The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has since been put under suspended animation.
On Friday, security was tightened across Manipur after Meitei group Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) called a shutdown in the valley districts, while the Zomi Students Federation (ZSF) and the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) declared the same for the hill districts to mark the second anniversary of the violence.

A candlelight march is also scheduled for Saturday evening at Kangla Nongpok Thong to honour those who lost their lives in the conflict.
The call for 'Sintha Leppa' (suspension of normal activities) drew a widespread response from the public on Saturday, with markets remaining shut, public vehicles off the roads, and private offices closed across the state. Schools, colleges and other institutes were also shut.
Security forces have also been deployed at key locations to prevent any unwanted activities, officials said.
In the hill districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, members of the Kuki community are observing 'Day of Separation', demanding a separate territory.

Nitin Gadkari conferred with Chintamanrao Deshmukh National Award
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Union Minister Nitin Gadkari was on Tuesday conferred with the Chintamanrao Deshmukh National Award for public service here. NCP-SP supremo Sharad Pawar handed over the award, instituted by Pune-based NGO Sarhad, to Gadkari and praised the Union minister for developing a network of highways across the country. Pawar praised Gadkari for his blunt talk and the knack of getting difficult projects implemented. He also highlighted the minister's popularity among members of Parliament across party lines. Pawar said a large number of MPs have expressed great confidence in Gadkari's abilities to execute projects and develop a road network in the country. The NCP-SP supremo said Gadkari's popularity among MPs stems from the fact that he does not discriminate against anyone along party lines and genuinely believes that good roads are a prerequisite for a nation to prosper. Deshmukh, who hailed from Maharashtra, was the first Indian to be appointed as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India in 1943 and also served as the finance minister from 1950 to 1956. He had famously quit as the finance minister over the Union government's plans to bifurcate the then state of Bombay into Gujarat and Maharashtra and to designate Mumbai as a union territory. Deshmukh also served as the chairman of the University Grants Commission and as the vice chancellor of Delhi University. He died in 1982. The first Chintamanrao Deshmukh National Award was conferred on former diplomat Dyaneshwar Mulay. ED begins probe against Cong MLA
Kochi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has begun an inquiry against Muvattupuzha MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan regarding allegations of irregularities in a land deal in Idukki Chinnakanal. Sources said that the ED took the statement of the previous owner of the property in question. The case pertains to the allegation and subsequent vigilance case connected to irregularities relating to a resort constructed in Idukki. The ED is conducting the probe based on the case registered by the state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau (VACB). The MLA was listed as the 16th accused in the case. The allegation relates to a 50-cent land in Pappathi Chola of Chinnakanal. Earlier, the revenue department took action against the officials for conducting the transfer of the registry of the property. There are 21 accused listed in the vigilance case. The Congress MLA was accused by the CPM of irregularities in the purchase and registration of land, and Kuzhalnadan challenged the party to prove the allegations against his property dealings. The CPM's allegations came after Kuzhalnadan questioned the financial dealings of chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan's daughter with a Kochi-based firm.

"To Protect Moral, Ethical Values": Kyrgyzstan Bans Online Porn
Bishkek: Kyrgyzstan has banned access to online pornography and imposed state control over internet traffic under new laws signed by President Sadyr Japarov, his office said on Tuesday. Japarov's office said the ban on pornography is to "protect moral and ethical values" in mostly Muslim Kyrgyzstan, a mountainous Central Asian country of 7 million people which gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The legislation requires internet providers to block websites based on decisions by the ministry of culture. Violators will face fines. Once Central Asia's most democratic country, Kyrgyzstan has seen increasing pressure on opposition groups and independent media since Japarov, a populist and nationalist, swept to power on a wave of protests in 2020. He has made the protection of what he calls traditional Kyrgyz values a centrepiece of his agenda. Also on Tuesday, Japarov signed a decree imposing a state monopoly on international internet traffic. Under the decree, state-owned telecoms company ElCat will become Kyrgyzstan's sole provider of international internet traffic for a year-long trial period, starting on August 15. All other Kyrgyz telecom operators will be required to transfer their contracts for international bandwidth to ElCat within two months. Bishkek-based political analyst Emil Juraev told Reuters: "This decision only adds to the growing role of the state at the expense of market freedom in Kyrgyzstan." The move comes ahead of a parliamentary election due in 2026, and a presidential poll due in 2027. Japarov, whose allies dominate the legislature, has indicated he will run again.
