England add Jofra Archer to squad ahead of second Test against India

Glasgow Times26-06-2025
The 30-year-old pace bowler, who has not played Test cricket since February 2021, returns to the England set-up in the only change to Ben Stokes' squad that secured a thrilling five-wicket win in the series opener at Headingley.
Archer's Test career has been derailed by a string of injuries.
He played his first red-ball match since May 2021 this week, marking his return with a wicket in Sussex's County Championship draw against Durham in Chester-le-Street.
With the start of the 2025-26 Ashes series less than five months away, former England captain Michael Vaughan feels Archer needs to play at international level this summer but advised waiting until at least the third Test at Lord's.
'I hope England aren't too funky in terms of just swapping and changing for changing's sake; I like seeing teams play over a period,' Vaughan told the PA news agency.
'Yes, you want to see Jofra throughout the summer, that's not a debate. We need to see Jofra play a Test match or two but on the back of just one innings and one four-day game in four years, I just don't see the rush.
'Let him play for Sussex for one more week and then potentially pencil him in for the Test match at Lord's.'

Archer burst on to the international scene in 2019, bowling the decisive super-over in England's World Cup win over New Zealand at Lord's and taking 22 wickets at 20.27 in four Tests that followed against Australia in the drawn Ashes series.
But an elbow injury first sustained in 2020 and that required four operations curtailed Archer's progress and he then had to work his way back from a recurring stress fracture in his back, which he first sustained in 2022.
He returned to action for England in their ODI series against Bangladesh in March 2023, but was then sidelined by elbow issues and did not play international cricket until May 2024.
Archer was ruled out of England's ODI series against the West Indies last month with a thumb injury sustained playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.
'We don't quite know how his body's going to stand up,' continued Vaughan.
'All the talk is that his body's good. But let's not be too harsh on him in terms of building him up so much, because he hasn't played.
'At times he looked short of a gallop in the Champions Trophy, then he had spells in the IPL that were very good but that's just four overs.
'I mean, England need him. You look at a barrage of a quick bowlers that you want to arrive in Australia with, England will want him in that that squad.
'But I wouldn't want to rush him too soon to then take him back a step or two.'
Warwickshire batter Jacob Bethell and bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, who did not feature at Headingley, have retained their places in the squad.
The second Test in a five-match series starts next Wednesday, with the following Tests at Lord's (July 10-14), Old Trafford (July 23-27) and the Oval (July 31-August 4).
England men's Test Squad: Ben Stokes (Durham), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Sam Cook (Essex), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Jamie Overton (Surrey), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).

Indigenous footy star Willie Rioli blames his scandals for driving First Nations players away from the AFL

Port Adelaide forward Willie Rioli says he almost quit and feels some blame for the drop of Indigenous players drafted into the AFL. Rioli has revealed he considered retiring in the midst of controversies in late April and early May. The Power forward expressed a hatred for Hawthorn in the wake of the rival club's racism allegations in a social media post in late April. And in early May, Rioli was banned for one game for a social media threat to Bailey Dale after the Western Bulldog made what Port described as a culturally insensitive remark during a game. 'Definitely it gets to a point where it's a bit too much sometimes,' Rioli told Port's club podcast, Peeled. 'And yeah I have spoken to my manager and the club a couple of times about walking away from the game, which I am not shy to talk about. The Port Adelaide star (pictured) said he partly blames himself for the fact the AFL now has 62 Indigenous stars, down from a high of 87 in 2020 'More so ... trying to not be putting any more pressure on the club. Get them out of the spotlight as well, in terms of not have to deal with my issues so much as a person off-field.' Rioli said he carried a weight of past indiscretions including his 18-month suspension from 2019 for trying to swap his marijuana-tainted urine sample with a clean sample in a drug test when at West Coast. Describing the suspension as a 'dark time', Rioli feared he may be scaring recruiters from drafting Indigenous players. The number of Indigenous players has dropped to 62 this year, from a high of 87 in 2020. 'I know it's mainly because of COVID,' Rioli said of the declining Indigenous representation. 'I do hold a bit of blame myself a little bit for some of the stuff I have been through, in terms of clubs not trusting Indigenous players.' The 104-gamer said he continued his career partly to rectify any such perception. 'I felt that was my driver to come back to footy ... be the light in terms of "we can go through this",' he said. 'I look at the drop in terms of Indigenous players in the competition ... that gives me the motivation to stick around longer, to help the next generation do better than what we are doing or what I am doing. 'It's more just trying to show the real person I am. 'And be a leader and be a role model for the next generation to be like, 'Look, he can take this stuff' but he's still been strong enough to hang around. 'I want the next (Indigenous) generation to be better than what we are right now.

Sky Sports News star confirms exit after 23 years as Chris Kamara sends message

Sky Sports have continued to lose seasoned broadcasters with Alan Myers being the latest football-reporting veteran to leave the channel after 23 years of service Football broadcasting veteran Alan Myers has officially confirmed his departure from Sky Sports after 23 years at the channel. Myers first broke the news of his decision to leave back in May. The reporter was predominantly situated in the North West and North East during his spell with Sky Sports News, covering Manchester City, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Everton. His exit is just the latest in what's shaping up to be an exodus in a summer of change for the broadcasting giant. ‌ On June 30, Myers took to X to announce his farewell to fans, writing: "Last day at Sky Sports News today! Always difficult leaving the safety of what you know but change is something to embrace, as they say 'don't lose tomorrow by reaching back for yesterday' it's been a total pleasure working at Sky, now for new challenges as a freelance Journalist." ‌ A flurry of well-wishers followed in the comments, including from Sky Sports and Brentford legend Chris Kamara who said: "Good luck to you Alan". Just prior to the Premier League season concluding, Myers revealed on social media that he had made the call to walk away from Sky. "After a 23 year association I have decided to leave @SkySportsNews," he wrote. "The Channel has given me so many great moments, some tough days too but most importantly many great friends and colleagues. It's been an absolute privilege to be a part of the journey, and what a journey it was! "I want to say a huge thank you to all of those that have helped me from when I joined in 2002, right up to today, and there's still a couple of big stories to cover for me in my final weeks. "SSN has taken me to over 30 countries, World Cup finals, ECL finals and so much more, places as far and wide as Indian to Israel to South Africa, I've been so privileged. So many great stories I've been lucky to work on and people I've been lucky to interview, and of course work with some amazing colleagues #blessed." His post was accompanied by photos of some of Myer's most memorable moments working for Sky including an infamous meeting with controversial former Liverpool owner Tom Hicks. ‌ He also posted an image of an interaction with legendary boxing promoter Don King, a snap of him reporting late into the night on transfer deadline day, as well as being present upon Michael Owen's unveiling at Newcastle United in 2005. Myers joins a host of stars who have left Sky in recent times. The shockwaves sent by the exit of Soccer Saturday's Jeff Stelling at the end of the 2022/2023 have continued with channel alumni Geoff Shreeves, Martin Tyler and Bianca Westwood all following in recent years. ‌ Guy Havord, Dickie Davis, Greg Whelan and Jaydee Dyer were also affected by the cuts. Rob Wotton, senior reporter Melissa Reddy and presenters Teddy Draper, Paul Gilmour and Jasper Taylor are also leaving the channel this summer. Kamara meanwhile stepped down from his role on Soccer Saturday at the end of 2021/22 football season after working on the show for 24 years. Sky have insisted the large scale cuts are not a cost-cutting measure however. A Sky Sports News spokesperson said: "We've shared proposals with the Sky Sports News team to change how we're structured, aimed at making us more agile and better equipped to serve audiences across TV, digital and social. A small number of roles are impacted, and we are now entering a period of consultation with those colleagues."

Lions name strong team to face Brumbies as preparations ramp up for first Test

Andy Farrell has picked his strongest British & Irish Lions combination so far for his squad's penultimate fixture before they take on Australia in Brisbane next week. The majority of the Lions' leading names have been selected to start against the ACT Brumbies in what is clearly being seen as a dress rehearsal ahead of the first Test. The first-choice pairing of Finn Russell and Jamison Gibson-Park are reunited at half back inside an all-Irish centre pairing of Bundee Aki and Gary Ringrose, with Scotland's Blair Kinghorn at full-back and the Anglo-Irish combination of Tommy Freeman and James Lowe on the wings. Farrell's preferred pack to face the Wallabies on Saturday week is also becoming clearer with skipper Maro Itoje joined by Joe McCarthy in the back-row. Ellis Genge has received the nod at loosehead with Tadhg Furlong picked ahead of Will Stuart on the opposite side of the front row. A significant game also looms for the English pair of Ollie Chessum and Tom Curry in the back row alongside the Irish No 8 Jack Conan. There is also a spot on the bench for Henry Pollock, ruled out of Saturday's win over the Waratahs with a tight calf, and winger Mack Hansen, who grew up in Canberra and now returns Australia's capital as one of the Lions replacements for a game which Farrell clearly expects to be a full-on contest. 'In 2013 the Brumbies beat the British & Irish Lions in Canberra and this year they were the leading Australian team in Super Rugby – so we are fully aware of the challenge in front of us,' said Farrell. 'It will also be a special occasion for Mack Hansen as he returns to his hometown and gets the opportunity to play for and represent the Lions against some of his old teammates.' As anticipated the squad's most recent addition, Owen Farrell, will not be involved and will now hope to play some part in the Lions next game against an Invitational Australia & New Zealand XV in Adelaide on Saturday. British & Irish Lions: Kinghorn; Freeman, Ringrose, Aki, Lowe; Russell, Gibson-Park; Genge, Sheehan, Furlong, Itoje (capt), McCarthy, Chessum, Curry, Conan. Replacements: Kelleher, Porter, Stuart, Van der Flier, Pollock, Mitchell, M Smith, Hansen.
