
Traders visit Samrala port, get hands-on experience of export biz
The visit was part of an export training programme organised by the Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU) to provide hands-on experience and knowledge of the export process to budding entrepreneurs and MSMEs.
Many participants said they were learning about exports for the first time.
"I had no idea about duty drawbacks, IC dates, or road tap incentives before this," said Paras Kapoor, who runs an auto parts business manufacturing components for trucks and tractors.
"I had my doubts about documentation, packaging requirements, and logistics, all of which got clarified on seeing everything here in practice."
Participants strongly emphasised the need for the govt to conduct more such training programmes and make them accessible to all businesses.
"Such trainings should be free and widely available," said Bhavneet Singh of Sukhbir Enterprises, a Ludhiana-based auto parts manufacturer.

At the Samrala dry port, attendees were shown the entire export workflow, including customs clearance procedures, material inspection protocols, container handling, and interactions with officials and rules. Trainers also explained export schemes, refund processes like duty drawbacks, IC dates, and govt incentives available to businesses.
Anuj Saharan, who is into forging business, praised the mix of theory and practice. "Most small businesses don't even know what benefits they're eligible for under MSME export schemes. This training gave clarity on the shipping process, export documentation, and practical do's and don'ts."
Several participants shared that they had held back from exporting, despite having quality products, because of the perceived complexity of the system.
"There's a fear of the unknown," said another participant, adding, "We've been serving domestic clients only, even though our materials are export-ready. The only thing holding us back was not knowing how to start."
Experts conducting the training underlined the vital role dry ports like the one in Samrala play in simplifying exports for landlocked regions, by offering logistics and customs clearance services closer to industrial hubs.
Vinod Kumar, the instructor of the exports training programme at CICU, called for a broader push to help local businesses tap into international markets.
"The govt must start conducting free exports training to make 'Make in India' go global," another attendee said. "Though there has been focus on exports, but without wide accessible training on importing and exporting, the true potential of 'Make in India' cannot be unleashed," he added.

‘Innovations, creativity among youth key factors to promote climate action'
Innovations, creativity and digital fluency among the youth were the key factors to promote environmental and climate action, which could ensure sustainability and pave the way for 'green growth', experts said at conference on 'youth sustainability' here on Monday (July 21, 2025). The event formed part of a campaign for involving youth in the action to control climate change. The experts described the youth as not just the leaders of tomorrow, but as the 'solution providers of today', while calling upon them to adopt a shared vision of green economy. An environmentally sustainable economy could be evolved with proper resource management, collaborations and upskilling. Water conservationist and Magsaysay Award winner Rajendra Singh said the challenges of climate urgency had produced opportunities to learn the use of indigenous knowledge systems. 'Communities equipped with local wisdom can conserve water and revive the dry and dead rivers,' Mr. Singh said. Highlighting the role of Tarun Bharat Sangh, established by him, in the revival of Arvari river in Alwar district with the construction of small check dams, Mr. Singh said the adoption of prudent agricultural practices would make the ecosystem healthy and mitigate the impact of climate change. Haridev Joshi University of Journalism Vice-Chancellor Sudhi Rajiv said the individual and collective action of the youth could help improve environmental outcomes, even as the educational institutions could function as 'living laboratories' for sustainability. Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce and Industry president K.L. Jain said the industries must not merely be engines of growth, but they should become champions of green innovation. 'The sectors such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, sustainable agriculture and circular economy will be at the forefront of India's transition into a green economy in the next ten years,' he said. Experts addressing the sessions on youth-industry synergy, digital narratives, and harnessing communication said the energy of youth and the experience and resources of industry should be brought together to create a green, inclusive and resilient economy. To bridge the gap between the academia and the industry on climate action, the steps suggested by the speakers included co-creation of curriculum, encouraging apprenticeships and on-field exposure, supporting research and development collaborations, developing centres of excellence and incentivising startups and innovation labs. The campaign for climate action has been taken up under the aegis of Jaipur-based Lok Samvad Sansthan (LSS) and New Delhi-based Sustainability Karma. LSS secretary Kalyan Singh Kothari said the youth were being encouraged to produce contents to sensitise the people on the challenges of environmental degradation and promote sustainable living.

Ontario Doubles Down on ‘Buy Canada' Message as Angry Residents Boycott US
(Bloomberg) -- Ontario Premier Doug Ford renewed a call to buy 'Canadian-made everything' to heap pressure on the US to negotiate a trade deal and lift tariffs. Ford, who leads Canada's biggest province and is hosting a meeting of premiers this week, said the country should lean into its status as America's biggest customer. Prime Minister Mark Carney will make an appearance at the conference on Tuesday for a huddle with the provincial leaders. Carney is sending Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-US trade, to Washington this week to negotiate with US President Donald Trump's administration, which has threatened a 35% tariff on some Canadian goods if there's no deal by Trump's Aug. 1 deadline. But the president and his officials have sent mixed signals about whether they want to sign agreements or simply proceed with unilateral tariff rates on trading partners. 'We're encouraging all provinces and territories: start buying Canadian-made vehicles, start buying Canadian-made everything — that will hurt more than anything at all,' Ford told reporters on Monday as he arrived at Deerhurst Resort near Huntsville, a picturesque town at the heart of Ontario's Muskoka region. Canadians say they're ramping up their boycott of US travel and products in response to the tariffs, according to the Bank of Canada's quarterly survey of households released Monday. About 55% of respondents said they're spending less on vacations to US destinations, and roughly 63% said they're pulling back on purchases of American goods. 'We're their number one customer. We buy more products from the US than Japan, China, Korea, the UK and France combined. Appellate tribunal cuts Fema violation penalty slapped by ED on PwC from ₹230cr to ₹81cr
PwC NEW DELHI: An appellate tribunal here has imposed a Rs 81 crore penalty on PwC, reducing it from the Rs 230 crore slapped by Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the audit firm in a case of violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema). PwC has been accused of receiving Rs 230 crore FDIs in violation of Fema rules as audit firms cannot receive foreign direct investment (FDI), according to ED. The case was initiated by ED on information that PwC had received FDI running in crores in the name of grant. "The company is engaged in audit practice which does not permit receipt of the FDI," the ED had argued and which was upheld by the tribunal on Safema (Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act, 1976). The transactions were carried by PwC without the approval of the RBI, violating Fema rules, it had said. The bench of the tribunal - headed by Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari - in an order of July 9 accepted the investigation of ED but reduced substantially the penalty amount on the company, a former chairman and other officials. The appellant has received grants under licence and accordingly inward remittance, though it is in contravention of the (Fema) Act and Regulations made therein. Taking the overall view, we reduce the penalty from Rs 230 crore to Rs 80.50 crore on the appellant, PwC," the judgment said, and ordered for release of the bank guarantee furnished by the accused. The judge further observed that the penalty of Rs 23 lakh on Kapoor was excessive and reduced it to Rs 5.75 lakh in place, finding it to be disproportionate to the contravention keeping in view the overall circumstances of the case. "In the light of the findings recorded above, we cannot subscribe the arguments raised by the counsel for the appellants, rather, find a case for contravention of Sections 6(2), 6(3), 9(b), 10(5), 10(6) of Fema," the judge noted.
