'Longer this time': Cincinnati Reds ace Hunter Greene heads to Arizona for lengthy rehab
The team has nothing close to a firm projection for his return from the injured list since Greene spent the last few days meeting with specialists and getting additional testing and opinions.
The Reds are going to have to move forward without ace Hunter Greene, who is sidelined with a groin injury he suffered June 3. No timetable is set for his rehab, only that it will be 'slower than last time,' when he missed two weeks.
But after the last meeting Friday night, the plan calls for Greene to travel to the team's facility in Arizona to rehab with medical staff and at some point start a throwing program there.

'The basic of it is it's going to take a little longer this time,' manager Terry Francona said, describing a 'hands-on treatment' program and eventual baseball-activities program.
A few hours after outlining the lengthier plan for Greene, the club announced the acquisition of right-handed starter Brian Van Belle from the Boston Reds Sox in a trade for cash considerations.
Van Belle (5-1, 2.29 at Triple-A) made eight starts and four relief appearances before earning his first big-league callup this week. He was designated for assignment before making his debut. The Reds optioned him to Triple-A Louisville.

Greene, who missed two weeks for a Grade 1 groin strain last month, aggravated the same area during his third start back from the IL. He also reported back and hip soreness at the time – the result of compensating for the groin issue, doctors surmised.
He received an epidural, which Francona described as a proactive move that wouldn't cost down time since he already was on the IL. 'I don't know if he probably would have done that if he was pitching,' the manager said. "So knock that out."
The back and hip aren't considered serious concerns in the recovery and rehab process.

First and second opinions on the aggravated groin injury suggested the same Grade 1 (lowest) level.
The bottom line is that the Reds figure to be without their ace until at least sometime in July, just as they head into one of the toughest stretches of their schedule.
Hunter Greene was on pace to make his second straight All-Star Game appearance, going 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA and 11 strikeouts per nine innings across 11 starts before being injured.
Greene, a first-time All-Star last year, is 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA and 11 strikeouts per nine innings across 11 starts this season.
'The timeline – it's going to be a little slower than last time,' Francona said.
Asked if it was surprising that it looks like such a lengthier injury this time around, Francona said, 'When it happens again I think you have to kind of sit back; that's why we sent him to a specialist. He said we need to give him more time. So that's what we're going to do.'

Veteran left-hander Wade Miley has assumed Greene's spot in the rotation in the meantime. Miley earned his first win since 2023 Monday after spending the past year working back from Tommy John surgery.
Miley makes his second start for the Reds on Sunday in Detroit.

A rare night of good news and results for Giants as they rout Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO — Everywhere you looked Saturday, fun things were going on at Sutter Health Park. Mostly for the San Francisco Giants, but the A's had a few good vibes, too. Matt Chapman returned to San Francisco's lineup after missing a month with a right hand sprain and reached base four times; Logan Webb, pitching near his hometown, tamped down an A's offense that scored 11 the night before; and Heliot Ramos, drilled by a pitch in the first inning, responded with a homer in the fifth in the Giants' 7-2 win over Sacramento. Webb didn't need to boost his chances at getting named to the National League All-Star team on Sunday, because he's pretty much a lock, with fellow starter Robbie Ray also a strong candidate. The A's made him work, especially in the sixth, when with one out, the bases loaded and a run already in, Webb got Tyler Soderstrom, the team's top RBI man, to bounce into a double play, his second of the night. Webb went 6 ⅔ innings and allowed two runs, seven hits and three walks while striking out six. His 2.62 ERA is fifth best among NL starters; at 2.68, Ray's is eighth best. Webb's 133 strikeouts are second most behind Zach Wheeler's 136 and Ray is fifth at 117. And when it comes to All-Star candidates, the bullpen has two: Randy Rodriguez, who came on in the seventh and got Jacob Wilson to pop up to end the inning and strand two, and Tyler Rogers, who worked a perfect eighth. Chapman had an infield single, a walk and scored two runs in his return, and, like Ramos, he was hit by a pitch in the first inning as the Giants-fan heavy sellout crowd of 12,298 booed. Willy Adames drove in two runs with a single that inning, and he drove in two more with another in the third. Severino, the A's top offseason acquisition, allowed five runs in four innings, just his latest disappointing outing, but there are reasons for optimism overall for a team with one of the better collections of young hitters in the game. Sacramento had four first-round picks in the lineup Saturday, including Rookie of the Year candidates Jacob Wilson and Nick Kurtz, plus Soderstrom and third baseman Max Muncy. There were two more A's first-rounders on the scene: Chapman and A's first-base coach Bobby Crosby, and it might not have been a coincidence that the Kings' top draft picks, Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud, threw out the first pitches Saturday. For comparison's sake, the Giants had two of their first-rounders in their order, Ramos and catcher Patrick Bailey — plus Matt Williams, coaching third base. And does it count that Soderstrom's dad, Steve, was a Giants' first-rounder? -
