Indian government open to Pakistan participation in global sports events
Global tournaments are fine, bilateral matches are not
Mandaviya clarified that India will continue to face Pakistan in international competitions, where multiple countries participate. 'When it comes to global events, India is open to playing all nations, including Pakistan,' he said. However, he made it equally clear that bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan remain suspended.
'The government's position is well known, we do not support bilateral sports events with a country that promotes terrorism,' Mandaviya stated, underlining that national security remains the priority.
India is set to host two major hockey events, the Asia Cup 2025 and the Junior Hockey World Cup, and Pakistan's participation has drawn attention. Mandaviya confirmed that India will issue visas to Pakistani teams for these multi-nation tournaments, should their government approve travel.
'We've told Pakistan that we have no objection to their participation and will issue visas. It is now up to their government to decide whether they want to send their teams,' he explained.
The Hockey Asia Cup is scheduled from August 27 to September 7 in Rajgir, Bihar, serving as a qualifier for the 2026 Hockey World Cup in Amsterdam. The Junior World Cup is also set to take place in India later this year.
India maintains open stance for multilateral events
Mandaviya's remarks reaffirm India's consistent approach of supporting international sporting collaboration, but only within a multilateral context. While Indian athletes will share the field with Pakistani counterparts in global events, no standalone bilateral series are on the horizon until substantial changes occur in the geopolitical climate.

Hyderabad parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday linked educational and social awareness and addiction to social media directly to the community's political inclusion, citing the ongoing controversy in Bihar over the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. This, he said, would not only enable participation in democracy but also facilitate defending their rights and shape the nation's future. 'In our beloved country, there are big challenges for minorities and especially Muslims. We will overcome them if we are united and strong: politically, and in fields like science, engineering, medicine and law,' Mr. Owaisi said. Underscoring the acute need for more lawyers within the community, he said, 'The Muslim minorities need more and more lawyers who will raise their voices for their sharia, personal laws, fundamental rights and against police injustice.' He also expressed concern over alarming dropout rates among Muslim students, noting that over 21 lakh children had dropped out, of whom 51 % were girls. He warned that such educational exclusion, which was primarily due to fee non-affordability by weaker sections. This, he said, was not only a loss for the minority community, but for the nation as a whole. He criticised the narrowing of pre matric scholarships by the Union government. Mr. Owaisi said the Prime Minister's vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' would remain unfulfilled unless minorities received equitable educational opportunities. 'If you go to Muslim areas, you will find more liquor shops and police stations. What is required are schools and hospitals, only then will the country become stronger,' he opined.

Pahalgam was ‘deliberate' to sow religious divide: Jaishankar urges China to take firm stand on terrorism
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to remain committed to its founding goals of combating terrorism, separatism, and extremism, calling for an 'uncompromising' stance on such threats. Speaking at the SCO foreign ministers' meeting in Tianjin, with his Chinese and Pakistani counterparts present, Jaishankar strongly justified India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. 'The three evils that SCO was founded to combat were terrorism, separatism and extremism. Not surprisingly, they often occur together. Recently, we in India witnessed a graphic example in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22,' he said. Jaishankar, who is making his first visit to China since the Galwan Valley clashes of June 2020, added, 'The UN Security Council, of which some of us are currently members, issued a statement that condemned it in the strongest terms and 'underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice'.' 'We have since done exactly that and will continue doing so,' he asserted. The External Affairs Minister said the attack was 'deliberately conducted to undermine' the tourism economy of Jammu and Kashmir and sow a religious divide. Without naming China directly, Jaishankar also made a veiled reference to Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), stressing that cooperation must respect territorial integrity and sovereignty. 'It is essential that such cooperation is based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and in accordance with territorial integrity and sovereignty of member states,' he said. Jaishankar noted that the world today was grappling with 'more conflicts, competition and coercion,' and called for stabilising the global order. 'The challenge before us is to stabilise the global order, de-risk various dimensions and through it all, address longstanding challenges that threaten our collective interests,' he said.
