Pentagon says North Korean missiles that can hit US may soon be in production
Guillot cited the October test launch of the Hwasong-19 ICBM with solid fuel, which can be deployed and prepared for launch faster than a missile with liquid propellant.
Rhetoric about the new ICBM by North Korea 'suggests Kim is eager to transition his strategic weapons programme from research and development to serial production and fielding, a process that could rapidly expand North Korea's inventory' while narrowing Guillot's confidence in his command's capacity to defend against ballistic missiles, the general said.
Questions remain within the American military. When pressed at a Brookings Institution event in November whether the Hwasong-19 test indicated North Korea could pair a nuclear warhead with an ICBM that could withstand the rigours of launch, flight and descent through the atmosphere, Admiral Samuel Paparo, head of US Indo-Pacific Command, said 'we've not yet seen that capability, but we just see continued testing towards that.'

Trump to attend Asean summit after call with Malaysia's Anwar
Advertisement Trump confirmed his attendance for the 10-member regional bloc during a phone call early on Thursday morning, Anwar said, during which the US president also congratulated Malaysia for its role in brokering a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand over a border dispute. The two leaders also discussed Trump's incoming tariffs and free trade, Anwar said. 'After our discussions, he said he has decided to push back his tariff announcement to tomorrow, and he promised it will not be a burden to Malaysia's economy,' Anwar told parliament. 'President Trump also confirmed that he will attend the Asean Summit in October.' Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the tariff rate with the US will be announced on Friday. Palestinian move makes Canada deal 'hard': Trump
Palestinian move makes Canada deal 'hard': Trump Donald Trump's Truth Social post came soon after Canada's announcement that it is recognising a Palestinian state. File photo: Reuters US President Donald Trump said it will be difficult to make a trade deal with Canada after the country announced it is backing Palestinian statehood. "Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh' Canada!!!" he wrote on Truth Social. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Carney announced on Wednesday that Canada is planning to recognise a Palestinian state at a meeting of the United Nations in September. Canada's announcement followed similar moves by France and Britain. Israel and its closest ally, the United States, both rejected Carney's statements. Canada and the US are working on negotiating a trade deal by August 1, the date Trump is threatening to impose a 35 percent tariff on all Canadian goods not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. Carney said on Wednesday that tariff negotiations with the Trump administration have been constructive but that the talks may not conclude by the deadline. (Reuters)
