Maharashtra: Lakhs of Warkaris perform yoga with CM Fadnavis on 11th International Day of Yoga in Pune
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], June 21 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday celebrated the 11th International Yoga Day with lakhs of Warkaris at Savitribai Phule Pune University in Pune, highlighting the state's rich cultural heritage and the growing popularity of yoga globally.
Fadnavis mentioned that yoga sessions were conducted simultaneously at various locations where Warkaris stayed overnight, connecting them to the main event.
'We are delighted that today on #InternationalYogaDay, a wonderful event was organised on the premises of Savitribai Phule Pune University. Maharashtra has an ancient tradition of 'Wari', where lakhs of Warkaris go on foot for the darshan of Lord Vitthal; all those Warkaris are in Pune today. They stayed in Pune last night. We connected all the places they stayed at simultaneously to this event and performed Yoga,' said Fadnavis.
The warkari-tradition is a non-Brahamanical tradition or a bhakti movement, which worships Vithoba, also known as Vitthal, who is regarded as a form of Vishnu or Krishna. Vithoba is often depicted as a dark young boy, standing arms akimbo on a brick, sometimes accompanied by his main consort Rakhumai.
The Varkari-tradition is geographically associated with the Indian states of Maharashtra and northern Karnataka. Saints and gurus of the bhakti movement associated with the Warkaris include Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Chokhamela, Eknath, and Tukaram, Gadge Maharaj all of whom are accorded the title of Sant.
The event highlighted Maharashtra's ancient tradition of 'Wari,' where devotees undertake a pilgrimage to seek the blessings of Lord Vitthal. The incorporation of yoga into this cultural practice underscores the state's commitment to wellness and spiritual growth.
Over 700 institutions affiliated with Pune Vidyapeeth participated in the yoga event, showcasing the widespread enthusiasm for yoga in the region.
Speaking to the reporters, Devendra Fadnavis said, 'Besides this, Yoga was also performed at 700 institutions of Pune Vidyapeeth. So, a grand event has been organised.'
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking India's ancient practice of holistic healing to the global stage.
'I want to express gratitude to PM Narendra Modi that our ancient culture, lifestyle, medical practice where mind and body are both thought about, which is called holistic healing today; Yoga has that capability and that has been adopted by all countries globally, with the efforts of PM Modi,' Fadnavis said.
While Devendra Fadnavis's wife Amruta Fadnavis, said that it is because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the world now understands the importance of yoga.
She added that yoga has become a way of life for many people across the globe and should not be done just for photos, but practiced every day.
'It is because of PM Modi that the world has acknowledged the importance of Yoga...The entire world has accepted Yoga as a lifestyle, and they are celebrating it. I think this shouldn't be just for a photo session and everyone should do Yoga every day,' she added.
The 11th International Day of Yoga saw widespread participation across states.
The theme for this year is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health,' which echoes India's vision of global wellness and reflects the integrated vision of well-being. It emphasises the interconnectedness of human and planetary health, drawing from the Indian ethos of 'Sarve Santu Niramaya' (May all be free from disease). (ANI)

DP 2034 to be modified in order to facilitate land acquisition for coastal road
MUMBAI: After a diktat by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Development Plan (DP) department of the BMC on Saturday issued a notice to modify the DP 2034 to make a provision for a coastal road from Versova to Dahisar. The stretches from Versova to Dahisar and Dahisar to Bhayandar are being carried out by the BMC. Since the government wants the BMC to start the work in August 2025, it asked for immediate changes to the DP. 'The CM told us to issue the notice immediately,' said a senior officer of the DP department. Once the reservation is changed, acquisition will become easier, said officers. Accordingly, some plots in Pahadi village, Goregaon, and others in Borivali, Eksar and Dahisar will be now reserved for the coastal road. The project will require 164 hectares of land—of this 61.5% is BMC land, 10% belongs to the state government while the rest is private land. Fadnavis has asked the collectors of Mumbai Suburban and Thane district to give advance possession of the government land required for the project so that construction can start. One MHADA layout at Aram Nagar and one building of the Central Institute of Fisheries Education, both in Andheri, will have to be acquired for this. The BMC will have to kill a large number of mangroves, and the compensatory afforestation will be done in Chandrapur district. The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority has already given clearance to the project, but the Forest Right Committee of the Mumbai suburban district is yet to do so. This committee, formed to protect the rights of forest dwellers under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 , plays a role in cases where forest land is proposed for diversion for non-forest purposes. The work between Versova and Dahisar will be done in six phases while the Dahisar-Bhayandar road construction will be a separate one. The alignment of the road is still to be finalised on the DP. The chief minister has ordered work on the coastal road to begin by August 2025 and mandated that the Versova-Dahisar stretch be completed by December 2028. The entire project will cost ₹ 22,000 crore.

Chennai Airport conducts mock drill to test emergency response
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 28 (ANI): The Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted a mock drill at Chennai International Airport on Saturday to assess emergency preparedness for a potential plane crash. The exercise followed the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. 'This mock exercise drill is a standard practice that airports undertake as part of their Airport Emergency Plan. Usually, we do it at the airport. This is the first time we are doing it outside, as we wanted to assess the preparedness of state authorities following what happened in Ahmedabad,' Airport Director of Airports Authority of India, Chennai International Airport, CV Deepak, told ANI. 'We will now hear from independent observers and fill the gaps accordingly... Approximately 300 people participated. Around 55 people participated as passengers onboard the aircraft,' he added. On June 12, a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. All 241 people on board, except one, were killed in the crash. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) Lab in New Delhi is currently working intensively to examine data retrieved from the black boxes of the flight. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Crash Protection Module (CPM) from the front black box was safely retrieved, and on June 25, 2025, the memory module was successfully accessed and its data downloaded at the AAIB Lab. Sources familiar with the process told ANI that an identical black box, referred to as a 'golden chassis,' was used to confirm whether data could be accurately recovered from the black boxes. One black box was recovered from the rooftop of a building at the crash site on June 13, and the other from the debris on June 16. The investigation is being led by AAIB officials and includes technical members from the Indian Air Force, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) from the United States, which is the official investigative agency of the country of the aircraft's design and manufacture. The Director General of AAIB is heading the probe. An aviation medicine expert and an Air Traffic Control officer have also been included in the investigation team. Sources confirmed that the NTSB team is currently stationed in Delhi and working closely with Indian authorities at the AAIB Lab. Officials from Boeing and GE are also present in the national capital to assist with the technical process. (ANI)

Himachal: Kangra airport conducts full-scale emergency mock drill to test disaster preparedness
Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 28 (ANI): A full-scale emergency mock exercise was successfully conducted at Kangra Airport on Saturday. The objective of the exercise was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Aerodrome Emergency Plan (AEP) and to enhance coordination among various responding agencies, according to airport officials. According to the simulated scenario, a Delhi to Gaggal flight (VTABC, Q400 type) reported a starboard engine failure at 1515 hours and requested priority landing. The aircraft was carrying 71 persons onboard. During its approach to Runway 33, the aircraft declared a 'May Day' and crashed near the Manjhi River. Immediately after the report, ATC declared a full emergency and alerted all concerned agencies. Fire tenders, ambulances, medical teams, and the State Disaster Management team rushed to the crash site. Injured passengers were provided first aid and shifted to hospitals, while a few casualties were sent for DNA profiling for identification. The exercise was closely monitored by Airport Director Dhirendra Singh, SDM Ishant Jaswal, DySP Ankit Sharma, officers from the State Fire Department, local hospitals, and the disaster response team. Coordination and response from all departments were found to be timely and effective. The exercise aimed to enhance preparedness and ensure an efficient real-time response during actual emergencies.
